MCAD/MCSD Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft (2nd Edition) .NET Core Requirements, Exams 70-305, 70-315, 70-306, 70-316, 70-310, 70-320, and 70-300 box vol. set ReviewThree things struck me about this set as soon as I received it and started working through the material. First, these books can be used for both learning and preparing for the certification exams. Second, if you buy the set from Amazon and you intend to take the exams, your cost will be a fraction of the published cost. This is because of the four 15% off exam fee vouchers that are included in the set. In the end, you will get almost 75% off the published price! Be careful when you buy this set as a used set from someone as the vouchers have discount codes that can only be utilized once. Third, these same books can be used whether you are interested in the VB.NET track or VC#.NET track.
This set is best suited for basic and intermediate level users of the .NET technologies. The four books in the set are focused on helping you learn - windows based programming, web based programming, XML web services and server components, and solution architectures. Each book takes a lesson style approach by splitting each chapter into multiple lessons. Each lesson focuses on teaching a unique skill and can be worked through individually. But I found that you need to stay with the sequence of lessons in order to get the maximum benefit.
I am new to taking Microsoft certifications so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the way the material is presented. Each lesson has an estimated time of completion which I found to be a bit too optimistic but not too far off. The relevant concepts are explained first and these are followed by step by step instructions on how to perform a specific task. Example code related to the task being described is included. At the end of each chapter (not lesson), there is a lab section that contains several exercises for the reader to perform to ensure proper learning. The completed labs are on the CD-ROM that comes with the set. This is very helpful in identifying by comparison anything wrong that you might have done on these exercises.
The CD-ROM that comes with the set has the entire set in electronic form, completed labs, practice files, and exam questions. The set also comes with a DVD that has a 60 day trial version of Visual Studio.NET 2003 Professional. The paper is very thin and these are paperbacks and not hardcover editions. I personally like the thinner paper as it is easier to carry the individual books around.
The prerequisites for using this set are a knowledge of controls & events, SQL, and other basic programming concepts. I think this set is aimed at users that are at a beginner or intermediate level. One advanced user I talked to wasn't as impressed with this set as I was.
The only downside to the set that I found was the intermingling of VB.NET and VC#.NET code throughout the books. I found this very annoying as I am interested in only the VB.NET portions. But I guess this could be a positive if you haven't decided which path to take or are planning on mixing the exams that you take.
The best part about these books is that there are so many practice questions for each exam! After researching other preparatory material online, I found that most vendors are not including that many practice questions. So getting these many questions (550 total in the set) for such a low price made it really worthwhile for me.
I would recommend getting the training guides by Mike Gunderloy (Que Certification series) that I am finding to be the best tools for exam preparation. But it doesn't hurt to get this Microsoft set considering the exam fee discount reduces the price of the set and the number of questions included is great!
Overall, don't hesitate to get this set if you are sure that you are going to take the exams. But use the set as a secondary and not a primary preparation tool. Good luck learning .NET and passing the exams!
Update on 5/5/2005: This review is old so please check with Amazon if the kit still comes with the vouchers before purchasing. Professional IIS 7 ReviewPeople often ask me how I like Vista and whether I think it's better than Windows XP or not. My standard reply is that I would have switched to Windows Vista for IIS 7 alone (I also do like many other Vista features, and thus prefer Vista over XP but that's beside the point here). In my opinion, IIS 7 is in many respects a lot better than its predecessor IIS 6 which runs on Windows XP and Server 2003. Besides the many new features that IIS 7 brings, it has one big advantage over the version running on Windows XP: it allows you to create multiple web sites that can run at the same time. No more messing around with tools like IIS Admin Pro although it was extremely useful in working around the limitations of IIS on Windows XP.
But with a new release of a complex piece of software as IIS is also comes the need for more knowledge and background information of the product. This is where the Wrox book Professional IIS 7 written by Kenneth Schaefer et al proved to be very useful.
The book is primarily aimed at administrators who manage Windows server running IIS 7. However, I'd also recommend the book to developers as they'll get a firm grasp of what goes on in the web server they're developing against. As an administrator, it's useful if you can read (or better yet, write) programming code as the book contains many code examples that show you how to create, edit and manage your IIS web sites (and more) through code and command line tools. As a developer, be prepared to learn a lot about how IIS works, and how to operate it, but don't expect too much in the field of actually developing web sites that will eventually run on IIS.
The book contains 20 chapters and is split over four parts. The first four chapters deal with topics like the history of IIS and compare the way the various flavors of IIS have worked in the past and how IIS 7 works now. You'll also learn more about the IIS architecture, with important sections on application pools, worker processes and the new "integrated pipeline mode" that allows you to deeply integrate your own managed .NET code into IIS. The chapter on planning is useful in helping you to determine requirements for things like software, hardware, network, and firewalls.
The installation process of IIS 7 is pretty straightforward and you'll probably be able to install IIS 7 yourself without a lot of instructions. However, if you've never installed IIS 7 before you may appreciate the large number of screenshots from the installation process in chapter 4. To me, the added value of that chapter was in the second half of the chapter where you learn how to create IIS sites, application pools, users and how to set permissions using command line tools and .NET code. Useful as that section was, I am not sure I understand what it did there as large parts of chapter 5 and 6 are dedicated to programmatically creating IIS objects. The chapter on installation closes off with some very useful tips on shared configuration which comes in handy if you're responsible for setting up or managing web farms.
The second section of the book contains a number of chapters that deal with web site administration. You'll learn how to create new sites, application pools and many other necessary IIS objects, both through the user interface and through .NET code and command line tools like appcmd.exe. You'll also see how to use the new configuration file system that allows you to manage your IIS sites using simple XML based config files. This is also one of my favorite new IIS features as it allows you to copy IIS settings (site settings, users, permissions and more) from your development machine to a production server (or from a backup file to a restored web site for example, no more messing with metabase backups). Being a developer, I liked this section a lot. I was able to quickly create a .NET application that allows me to create brand new and consistently configured web sites on my Windows Vista machine with the press of a button; something that comes in handy with the many Dynamicweb CMS web sites I run locally. I also found the chapter on the FTP Server quite useful. Since the out-of-the-box version of the FTP Server requires a fixed naming and directory structure it's good to see all the strict requirements clearly listed. Also, the new FTP Server that can be downloaded from www.iis.net is discussed in detail. The only thing I wish the book had included was a walkthrough of setting up a separate FTP site with a number of users accessing specific parts of the server. For example, you may want to have an FTP server unrelated to any of your web sites, (like [...]) and then grant yourself full control to the Inetpub folder, while providing access to one or more other folders for other users, preferably using non-domain accounts. While such a setup is possible and reasonable (and often extremely easy to do with commercial FTP servers), the book won't really help you figure out how to do it.
Chapter 11 and 12 show you how to extend the web server by writing your own modules using both managed and unmanaged code. If you're wanting to write integrated modules for IIS using all of its new features, this will definitely whet your appetite, although you'll need to look for dedicated books on the subject to get a better understanding of the whole subject.
The book also contains a number of chapters on security, covering both the security of your server as your own applications using the various authentication mechanisms (Windows, basic, forms and so on) and SSL. Whether you're new to IIS 7 or not, be sure to take a good look at these chapters to get a solid understanding of security in IIS. The last part of the book contains a few remaining subjects, including load balancing web farms, programmatic configuration and management and two chapters on monitoring, performance tuning, diagnostics and trouble shooting.
Overall, Professional IIS 7 is a very solid book on administrating IIS 7. Ken Schaefer and the other authors have done a great job in bringing a lot of knowledge on IIS together in one book. The book is generally concise, contains few errors and contains a lot of useful information, examples and code snippets to help you better install, manage and use your new IIS 7. I'd give the book 4.5 out of 5 stars.Professional IIS 7 OverviewAs the first update to Microsoft's server operating system in nearly five years, Windows Server 2008 boasts the new Internet Information Services 7.0 (IIS 7), which is the largest departure from previous versions of IIS ever. Real World ASP.NET: Building a Content Management System ReviewFirst off, the source code that accompanies the book is very useful (I use it to run an intranet) and it can be extended to display the content in a manner very different than the original author envisioned.
That said, I think this book could be used as a classic example of how not to write extensible, maintainable code. Rather than demonstrate the power and ease of ASP.Net using datagrids and user controls, the content lists are constructed using loops and tables, and the form to edit content is repeated no fewer than 3 times. In order to filter the content before displaying it to the user we run a test on every row to determine if it meets the criteria rather than using a DataView and a filter. I am currently converting the code to a cleaner implementation and I find I am deleting an average of 2 pages of code per page, with no loss of functionality.
When talking about content management I would have expected some sort of elegant promotion system, instead we are offered a custom page complete with custom code for each promotion, in spite of the fact that the only thing that changes between pages is who is allowed to perform the promotion and which state it is being promoted from/to.
This book will not teach you to create flexible software that can be easily adapted to changing requirements. It will teach you to create brittle software that requires an inordinate amount of effort to make the simplest changes (replacing the editor textbox with a WYSIWYG control shouldn't require modifying 3 separate pages -- and I have the code to prove it).Real World ASP.NET: Building a Content Management System Overview

Beginning ASP.NET 4.0 in C# 2010 ReviewThis book has lots of good information, and it is in mostly the right order. The problem with this book for many readers will be the style of presentation. It has been proven many times that people learn by doing, but this book doesn't give you as much in that area as is necessary to learn. There is code that you can download but it doesn't really line up with the book.
The worst part of this book are the code snippets that are placed throughout the book. They don't show the surrounding code, so everything is out of context, and you don't feel 100% sure of where it goes in your file, and to top it off, it is code that sometimes doesn't relate to the code you download. Many times, instead of showing actual real-life variables, it just shows the equivalent of an 'x'. So you have no idea how it is supposed to come together. It continuously says 'code removed for clarity'. I understand the point of this as that code isn't the focus of this section, but if I'm building a page, I need to see that code to make sure I have the same code as the book.
I would have to say that the information given is very precise, and if you already know C#, you're probably going to enjoy this book, but if you are new to it, and need examples and practice, it's not the best. Imagine watching an Olympic freestyle skier for a few minutes, and then without ever having skied or practiced jumping, you are suddenly asked to do the same flips and twists perfectly. Maybe an exaggeration, but you are really left on your own a lot of the time.
The book is very dry, so you have a very long attention span and motivation to get through the book in order to do well with it. It is clear it is written by a programmer. There are constantly references to terms that haven't been defined previously, and sometimes you get the feeling this guy is trying to impress you with words. I've had professors like that, and although I respect their knowledge and intelligence, it does not contribute to a good learning atmosphere. I'm not saying 'dumb it down', but when learning a complex topic, the simpler it can be presented, the better.
Another problem is the low resolution of many of the screen shots. I know that's a limitation of the technology, but it can actually be somewhat dizzying to look at because of the blurriness.

Professional C# 4.0 and .NET 4 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewC# and .NET are reintroduced in this one book for the 2010 audience of programmers. The two subjects are wedded in the text to form one complete reference. I have just finished reading this book and I can tell you that it will take another two readings to fully absorb the contents because of the numerous details. At just over 1400 pages, this is a compendium of the two programming areas that has enormous scope. I am impressed that the authors and the publisher were able to complete this project before the release of the two in April. Operations specific to the .NET v4 release are noted in the text.
I found the information in this book to be comprehensive and detailed in many ways. With 47 chapters and an appendix this book is going to be the cornerstone of my .NET computing from this time on. My previous references are getting dated and don't give me enough information to pass the employment interviews. This book and one other are going to be my entire reference library for C# programming in general.
I found the information to be very well written to the point that even after six years of using C# it increased my knowledge and understanding of this wonderful new computer language. I have over a dozen books on .NET and C# in my library and this is the best written of them all. For this reason I am giving it 5 stars. I believe that this is the best introduction to these two subject areas
Of course, if you want to work in depth on one of the chapters covered in this book, another reference that expands on the material will be required.Professional C# 4.0 and .NET 4 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewThis book starts by reviewing the overall architecture of .NET in order to give you the background you need to be able to write managed code. After that, the book is divided into a number of sections that cover both the C# language and its application in a variety of areas.
Part I: The C# Language: This section gives a good grounding in the C# language itself. This section doesn't presume knowledge of any particular language, although it does assume you are an experienced programmer. You start by looking at C's basic syntax and data types, and then explore the object-oriented features of C# before moving on to look at more advanced C# programming topics. Objects, types, inheritance, generics, arrays, tuples, operators, casts, delegates, lambdas, events, strings, regular expressions, collections, Language Integrated, Query (LINQ), Dynamic Language Extensions, memory management, pointers, reflection, errors, and exception are all covered in part 1.
Part II: Visual Studio: This section looks at the main IDE utilized by C# developers worldwide: Visual Studio 2010. The two chapters in this section look at the best way to use the tool to build applications based on the .NET Framework 4. In addition, this section also focuses on the deployment of your projects.
Part III: Foundation: In this section, you look at the principles of programming in the .NET environment. In particular, you look at assemblies, instrumentation, security, threading, tasks, synchronization, localization, System.Transactions, networking, interop, XAML, Managed Extensibility Framework, Manipulating Files and the Registry, transactions, how to build Windows services, and how to generate your own libraries as assemblies, among other topics.
Part IV: Data: Here, you look at accessing databases with ADO.NET, ADO.NET Entity Framework, data services. This part also extensively covers support in .NET for XML and on the Windows operating system side, and the .NET features of SQL Server 2008.
Part V: Presentation: This section shows how to build applications based upon the Windows Presentation Foundation and Silverlight, and covers writing components that will run on web sites, serving up web pages. It also has coverage on building classic Windows applications, which are called Windows Forms in .NET. Windows Forms are the thick-client version of applications, and using .NET to build these types of applications is a quick and easy way of accomplishing this task. Finally, it includes coverage of the tremendous number of features that ASP.NET, ASP.NET MVC, and ASP.Net Dynamic Data provide.
Part VI: Communication: This section is all about communication. It covers services for platform-independent communication using the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF). With Message Queuing, asynchronous disconnected communication is shown. This section looks at utilizing the Windows Workflow Foundation 4, as well as peer to peer networking, and creating syndication feeds.
The book closes with an appendix covering Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 development.

ASP.NET Unleashed (2nd Edition) ReviewTo begin with, this book isn't clear about what language is covered throughout the book. It seems it's trying to hide that it covers only Visual Basic. If you're into C#, you have to translate the examples yourself although these translations are ridiculously simple about 29 times out of 30. That 30th time, a certain amount of C# experience or extensive newsgroup searches will be needed.
If you want a decent VB reference you can go for this book or simply use the free .NET Framework SDK Documentation. The advantage of having this book at hand is that it sheds some light on the topics with its own examples.
As a tutorial to read from cover to cover, I think the author could have done a better job. If you read e.g. pages 84-131, you will read about the same text repeated four times with the exceptions being the search-and-replace that seems to have been performed on some words. I'm exaggerating a bit here, but not that much. I guess that's the price of having one author managing to write a 1400 pages book on a new technology all by himself, pressured by time. This isn't to be seen as critics against Walther though, he seems to be very knowledgeable on the subject.
I could recommend this book to VB programmers wanting something more than the free Microsoft documentation for ASP.NET. This is not a strong recommendation though. Concurrent Programming on Windows ReviewI really wanted to like this book, but in the end I couldn't. It seems to me to be at least twice as long as it needs to be, extremely poorly and confusingly written, and a mish-mash of random odds and ends. I don't think the author has really worked out who his target audience is. Is it people who have a serious interest in the logic of concurrent programming - in which case you'd be better off reading the original papers by the likes of Dijkstra and Hoare, or the much much shorter book by Ben-Ari? Or is it aimed at people who want to write concurrent programs that work on Windows? In which case you'd be better off reading the much shorter book by Beveridge and Wiener.
Proof-reading and quality control is shoddy. For example, I have the distinct impression that at some point some-one has done a global replace of "task" with "thread" in the text, resulting in jibber-jabber such as "though it's highly unlikely that anybody reading this book will have to take on such a thread" on page 60, to cite one example out of several that I noticed.Concurrent Programming on Windows Overview"When you begin using multi-threading throughout an application, the importance of clean architecture and design is critical. . . . Applying Domain-Driven Design and Patterns: With Examples in C# and .NET ReviewI was surprised that this book slipped under my radar for almost 3 months. I've been on the lookout for just such a unifying tome of knowledge that relates patterns and domain-driven design (DDD) to a practical .NET example for quite some while. The book delivers well on its promises, significantly surpassing the only other real competitor, Foundations of Object-Oriented Programming Using .NET 2.0 Patterns. The pros and cons, as I see them, are outlined below:
PROS
* Combines the ideas of Domain Driven Design (Evans) with Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture (Fowler). These books are pretty much mandatory reading prior to diving into this book.
* Draws upon a myriad of other well-known sources, including materials from Refactoring to Patterns and the GoF, work from Johnson and Lowy, as well as a rare reference to Naked Objects. The more experienced and better read you are, the more this stuff will make sense.
* Rare .NET coverage of advanced concepts like Plain Old CLR Objects (POCOs), persistence ignorant (PI) objects, O/R mapping with NHibernate, Dependency Injection, Inversion of Control, and Aspect-Oriented Programming.
CONS
* While some sections are really insightful and could contain more interesting materials, other sections seem to drone on too long. The work on defining the NUnit tests, in particular, flows like a stream of consciousness and doesn't really add a lot of structured value to understanding DDD, patters, or TDD for that matter.
* Embedded comments in the text adopt from the style used in Framework Design Guidelines. It worked very well for Cwalina / Abrams in their book because it seemed planned in from the outset. Comments like "one reviewer commented on the code with the following, more succinct version" seem like editorial comments left in and not collaborative authoring by design.
All-in-all a very solid book that fills a unique market niche, leaving it pretty much without peers. If Amazon had a 4.5 starts rating, Applying DDD would get it. As a secondary reference book, it doesn't offer the earth shattering insights of some of the innovative source materials found in the Fowler Signature Series, for example. It does, however, weave together an interesting example of how to tie all of these concepts together for the .NET architect looking to take their understanding to the next level.Applying Domain-Driven Design and Patterns: With Examples in C# and .NET OverviewApplying Domain-Driven Design and Patterns is the first complete, practical guide to leveraging patterns, domain-driven design, and test-driven development in .NET environments. Drawing on seminal work by Martin Fowler and Eric Evans, Jimmy Nilsson shows how to customize real-world architectures for any .NET application. You'll learn how to prepare domain models for application infrastructure; support business rules; provide persistence support; plan for the presentation layer and UI testing; and design for service orientation or aspect orientation. Nilsson illuminates each principle with clear, well-annotated code examples based on C# 2.0, .NET 2.0, and SQL Server 2005. His examples will be valuable both to C# developers and those working with other .NET languages and databases -- or even with other platforms, such as J2EE.

GDI+ Programming: Creating Custom Controls Using C# ReviewOne of my first .NET ah-hah experiences back in 2001 was creating an .aspx file that I could reference as a graphic (!). The .aspx file received two query parameters which informed it of the file name of the jpg and the width that the returned image was supposed to be. So then in an IMG tag, I would simply put src="ShowPicture.aspx?file=product1343.jpg&width=100" and it would display a thumbnail of that picture 100 pixels wide and proportionally high. This is an excellent way to produce dynamic pictures as well as protect your online photographs (show thumbnails to visitors, full sized pictures to members), and the .NET GDI+ classes are straight-forward and easy to use. Ever since then I have been looking for a book which goes into deeper detail of creating graphics in .NET with the GDI+ classes. Wrox has finally produced this book! In chapters 1 through 10 you get the basics: pens, brushes, texts, fonts, image manipulation, paths, regions and printing. Then in the rest of the book you learn how to make custom controls which create custom graphics (I love books that teach two things at a time -- great for developers who do four things at a time). If you read this book, you will think about graphics differently, namely, as dynamic objects which your application, the user and the environment can manipulate at run time. Microsoft Visual Studio 2010: A Beginner's Guide ReviewOne may wonder how anyone could write a decent introductory book to Visual Studio and related programming, do it just over 400 pages with decent sized type and screenshots, and still cover a little bit of everything from Asp.Net to MVC to WPF. This book successfully manages that task quite well.
The first four chapters get you up to speed on finding your way around visual studio enough to get a project started. It also includes brief tutorial on programming in both Visual Basic and C#. If you have programmed in other languages, or you are just starting programming, this will give you just enough knowledge to get started inside Visual Studio.. It covers program structure, some language syntax, and how to best use the Visual Studio make programming tasks easier.
The next three chapters cover creating projects, debugging, and accessing data. While whole books can be written on these subjects, Joe manages to hit the useful high points. Since much time can be spend debugging, understanding the debugging tools is essential for developers new to Visual Studio. Many hours of debugging can be saved by using the built in tools. He explains breakpoints and the useful debugging windows, and give a great walkthrough of using these concepts to track down a bug in a program with bugs.
The next part covers web and windows applications using ASP.NET MVC, Silverlight, WPF, and web services.. Again, whole books are written on these subjects. This book works through just enough information to understand how to use each topic, and a sample program for each to illustrate the concept. I, knowing very little about MVC, built the example in the chapter, and found how easy it was to learn.
Finally, enhancing and extending Visual Studio 2010 is covered. Templates, snippets and macro are covered as well as project add-ins.
Overall, I found the book well written, organized, and easy to use. Topics are introduced in a logical order. It is best to read the first seven chapters, and then after that, the chapters you are interested in. If you are interested in web, you can skip the WPF chapter and vice versa. This book is a must have for the entry level developer with little or no experience with Visual Studio. If you are a career developer with little or no Visual Studio experience, this book is a great introduction.

Introducing .NET 4.0: With Visual Studio 2010 (Expert's Voice in .NET) ReviewWhen you buy a new television and are luxuriating in it's opulence, it's extra crisp display and hi-fidelity sound, do you read the entire owners manual or do you just read the parts of the owners for the things that are basically new on this model of TV? You already know how to work the television as they are fundamentally all the same but this new model that you've bought may have a built in wireless connection, or options on the sound to change from Stereo to Dolby etc. There is no need to read the entire manual, only the bits that are new to this make and model.
Over the years that I have been a Microsoft .Net programmer I have read literally hundreds of books that are basically re-hashes of previous titles, updated to include what's new in the latest Framework release. For example, when .Net 3.5 was released, I read numerous books that were basically the .Net 3.0 books that were simply updated and expanded to include the new features of .Net 3.5. Whilst this can be a good thing, you have a single reference manual incorporating all you need to know in one place, sometimes you just want a book that only covers the changes in the frameworks. Just place the extra chapters in a separate book. Rather than reading about classes and technologies that you already know, just give me what's new. That is exactly what Introducing .Net 4.0 With Visual Studio 2010 is, for the most part. The book is based on the Beta version of .Net 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010 so some things may change by the time of actual release, however those changes are likely to be quite minor.
After a very brief introductory chapter Introducing .Net 4.0 delves straight in with what's been changed, added etc. to Visual Studio 2010. After all, this will (in all likely) be the tool you will use to take advantage of what follows in this book. From there we're off to a couple of chapters detailing changes to in the actual languages (this book is mainly geared towards the C# developer although the author does point out differences in VB.Net as well) and the underlying Common Language Runtime environment. Alex Mackey provides numerous examples liberally sprinkled around the chapters when introducing the new features to show you how they work and how to take advantage of them.
One thing that rather surprised me about this book is that Alex Mackey covers all the bases. It's not just a book for Windows Client developers or Asp.Net developers etc. He has included what's new in the .Net framework for all the technologies even including Silverlight. As an added bonus, the last chapter of the book covers the new Windows Azure framework. Whilst strictly speaking this isn't really part of .Net 4.0, there are tools built into Visual Studio 2010 to help take advantage of the new Azure framework and so it does fit in nicely with the purview of the book.
The book has a nice flowing feel to it and is surprisingly easy to read. Some technical books read more like an SA or university thesis whereas this one reads more like a novel. Packed with information regarding only the new additions and changes to the .Net Framework and Visual Studio.
If you are looking for a book teaching you how to program using Microsoft .Net technologies, then this isn't for you. If you are looking for an all-in-one reference manual on .Net 4.0 then again this book isn't for you. However if you are already a Microsoft .Net programmer and are looking for a book that details only what is new and changed in the upcoming .Net 4.0 framework, give yourself a head start with what's coming around the corner, then this book is for you and comes recommended.Introducing .NET 4.0: With Visual Studio 2010 (Expert's Voice in .NET) OverviewThe release of .NET 4.0 this year brings in a wide range of changes to the .NET Framework across a broad front ranging from C# to Silverlight, from WPF to ‘Oslo'. Many familiar technologies are being over-hauled, best practices are being changed and developer methodologies altered. With so many new ideas appearing developers are finding it hard to keep track of the opportunities that are opening up.Introducing .NET 4.0 crystallizes their options and provides them with a roadmap to the new releases. Microsoft ASP.NET Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) ReviewMost of Microsoft's Step by Step books suffer from the same basic problem - they explain the really easy stuff in tedious depth, while skipping over and assuming you already understand the difficult stuff. This book is one of the worst examples of this. Tedious chapters on very basic "security" or "configuration" is given but nothing is really explained when it counts. The configuration chapter has endless tables of parameters and possible values, but all too often says things like "a valid encoding string" without explaining what that is. While really dumb basics like "how to create a virtual directory" are covered (twice, with the same step by step graphics) terms like "you must use free-threaded objects" are thrown into the text very early on with no explanation for the poor novice as to what the heck this means. Screenshots are from beta 2 rather than release candidate so basic screenshots or references to "select Web Class" are incorrect (it's now called "ASP.NET web class"). Easy to figure out, but is this series aimed at novices or not?
Worse than all of this is the fact that apart from a very brief introduction to VS.Net in an early chapter (the quick overview of the different panels all books give) you get half way through the book without ever having opened VS.Net or typed in/written any code. Isn't this series supposed to be aimed at developers? Shouldn't we be getting into "doing" something instead of endless guff about "Notepad.Net" (it wasn't funny the first time) or how passwords should be a certain length if you want to be secure or... well you get my drift.
The other book in this series that I've seen (the OOP Step-by-Step) book is not great (lots of complex material presented in a "type this in" fashion without any real explanation of what's being typed in and why) but at least gets the developer doing something and has some pretty solid code and concepts behind it. This volume just comes across as tedious, repetitive and unsatisfactory for both new developers and experienced ones who want to get up to speed.Microsoft ASP.NET Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) OverviewThere is no book that we are aware of, either current, or in the pipeline, which matches this book. There are books already available that touch on ASP.NET performance topics, such as Microsoft ASP.NET Step-by-Step Guide. However, the difference with our book is that (1) it is focused exclusively on ASP.NET performance and optimization and (2) it will go much further in depth than any book currently on the market. The current ASP.NET books all focus on how-to, with performance issues tossed in for good measure. Performance Tuning and Optimization for ASP.NET Applications tackles performance issues head on, and makes them the central topic.

Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET (Core Reference) ReviewThis is the best programming book I have ever read. 1600 of pages of intelligent descriptions and code examples. First you learn the VB.NET language, then you dive into chapters that cover a specific realms like Attributes, Threading, Win32, ADO.NET, ASP.NET, and alot more.
As big as the book is, it does not cover everything and I dont think any book could. Hopefully the author comes up with a volumn II book that covers Network classes, Remoting, and more.
Note that this book is not for the faint, I would recommend reading a beginners VB.NET book. If you have VB6 experience then you will adjust real quickly because this book highlights the differences in comparison to VB.NET. In fact there are alot of VB6 examples side-by-side w/ VB.NET examples. As a bonus the book comes with a cd that contains Franscesco's VB 6 book. Building a Web 2.0 Portal with ASP.Net 3.5: None ReviewI've read the author's articles on Code Project, and when I found out he had written a book that built on them, I didn't waste any time getting my hands on it!
Being the one of the few developers in my group that work with the latest "cutting edge" technology, and with no one to answer the questions I have, this book has simply been the fountain of knowledge I'd been looking for. Definitely a must-read for those wishing to utilize the latest and greatest.
The book is well organized, and the writing style makes it an easy read (usually technical books put me to sleep, but not this one). It does assume that you've already had some experience using ASP.NET 2.0/3.5, Javascript, and so forth, so I agree that this book will be the most beneficial to seasoned and advanced ASP.NET developers.

Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming (Pro-Developer) ReviewAs a highly experienced VB/COM developer, I have been making the move over the C# and .NET. I have spent hours at the book stores looking over nearly every book available. I have bought a bunch of books as well, but none have come close to this book as far as insight, depth of knowledge, and .NET fundamentals. Mind you, this book is by no means for programming or object oriented beginners. It is meant for programmers who really know their stuff, but now want to know their stuff on .NET. Expecting to create a .NET solution without thorough knowledge of the material in this book would be seriously shortchanging your app.
Each chapter of this book covers a different fundamental piece of .NET -- Methods, Events, Shared Assemblies, Exceptions, etc. Without getting too language specific, he writes thoroughly about how these fundamentals were meant to be used. It is clear that he spent a lot of time with the Microsoft .NET team, as much of the material in this book is unavailable elsewhere, to my knowledge. But this book is far from a Microsoft infomercial, as so many are. For example, he talks about C# primitive types and actually disagrees with Microsoft's C# language spec with regard to their usage.
In summary, I would highly recommend this book to any experienced programmer who is serious about getting up to speed with .NET.Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming (Pro-Developer) Overview

It provides great practical examples of how to use Linq effectively on data objects and save hundreds of lines of code. At the same time, the author explains the performance implications so that you can make the right decision for your application. This book was a great find for me as I had a hard time last year when I tried to use Linq in some complex manipulation of objects involving joins.
The only disappointment for me was the fact that when I first I read the book online on Safari Books, the examples were in color and syntax highlighted. I decided to purchase the printed book to have it as a reference. The print edition is not in color and seems a step backwards.
I highly recommend this book to any developer that uses Linq. Not just for objects. Pro Silverlight 3 in C# (Expert's Voice in Silverlight) ReviewThis book is by far the best resource for Silverlight 3.0. In this version the author added a whopping 185 pages to the last edition. He added chapters on Data Controls, separated the Styles, Templates, and Custom Controls into two separate chapters name Styles and Behaviors, and Templates and Custom Controls, and added a new chapter on Navigation.
I have bought 3 other books on Silverlight 3, and put together they only contain about 1/8 of the value of this book (you can see which ones they are by Googling "Shiny Turds Books that do not Cut the Mustard").
It starts out with an introduction that covers the Visual Studio Silverlight environment. He then gives a short introduction to XAML. The introductions really help those who have no experience get rolling right away.
The author covers every out of the box element in detail (including the DataGrid control and a little on the DataForm control), and includes a nice reference for where the element can be found in the book. He also covers styles and templates, brushes and transforms, shapes and geometries, animation, and layout containers.
The book covers out-of-browser applications, assembly caching, networking, multithreading, isolated storage, browser integration, media and deep zoom, wcf services, the application model, and dependency properties and routed events.
One of the things I like best about the book is it includes a lot of references and material on the Silverlight Toolkit.
The book is very readable for those that like to read cover to cover, but it also makes a great reference.
The downloadable code is very usable and very complete.
This is a must have book for any developer working with Silverlight 3.0.

Marco's book differs from other programming books in that it doesn't attempt to provide an exhaustive reference of ASP.NET 2.0 features. Instead, he focuses the book around building a real-world end to end application and introduces and demonstrates how to use the key ASP.NET 2.0 concepts and features in the context of the application.
The result is a very readable book that provides a great deal of context about how ASP.NET 2.0 works, and how the different features integrate together. The result provides a reader with a much better grasp of the end to end structure of how applications are built, and can serve as a good roadmap to make progress in your knowledge and learning of ASP.NET.
