The Intel Microprocessors 8086/8088, 80186/80188, 80286, 80386, 80486, Pentium, and Pentium Pro Processor Architecture, Programming, and Inter- facing ReviewI have read the first 140 pages of this book, and I really like it. So far, I have the following comments.
Good points:
1.) It covers both real and protected mode from the start. Other books wait until the middle of the books before they cover protected mode.
2.) Assembly language command mechanism are explained in great detail. The author explain exactly what's going on. How the data moved from memory to register, register to register, how the memory in a computer is organized, how exactly PUSH and POP command works etc. There are lots of diagram that illustrate his explanations.
3.) It covers from 8086 to Pentium II hardware architecture. Many books are strictly limited to outdated 8086 and 8088 processors.
4.) The exercises at the end of each chapter increases my understanding of the subject and answers to even numbered problems are available at the end of the book.
Bad Points:
1.)Assembly language and processor architecture are hard subjects. You have to read each chapter several times before you can get a good grasp of the topic.
2.)Some of the topic presented by the authors can not be easily understood until you read the subsequent chapters.
One suggestion for people who read the book: Make sure you know how to convert binary, hexadecimal and decimal number. You have to know these otherwise you can get lost. Some basic understanding of logic gates is also helpfull! The Intel Microprocessors 8086/8088, 80186/80188, 80286, 80386, 80486, Pentium, and Pentium Pro Processor Architecture, Programming, and Inter- facing OverviewFor Introductory level Microprocessor courses in departments of Electronic Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering.Keeping students on the forefront of technology, this timely text offers a practical reference to all programming and interfacing aspects of the popular Intel family of microprocessors. MCAD/MCSD Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft (2nd Edition) .NET Core Requirements, Exams 70-305, 70-315, 70-306, 70-316, 70-310, 70-320, and 70-300 box vol. set ReviewThree things struck me about this set as soon as I received it and started working through the material. First, these books can be used for both learning and preparing for the certification exams. Second, if you buy the set from Amazon and you intend to take the exams, your cost will be a fraction of the published cost. This is because of the four 15% off exam fee vouchers that are included in the set. In the end, you will get almost 75% off the published price! Be careful when you buy this set as a used set from someone as the vouchers have discount codes that can only be utilized once. Third, these same books can be used whether you are interested in the VB.NET track or VC#.NET track.
This set is best suited for basic and intermediate level users of the .NET technologies. The four books in the set are focused on helping you learn - windows based programming, web based programming, XML web services and server components, and solution architectures. Each book takes a lesson style approach by splitting each chapter into multiple lessons. Each lesson focuses on teaching a unique skill and can be worked through individually. But I found that you need to stay with the sequence of lessons in order to get the maximum benefit.
I am new to taking Microsoft certifications so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the way the material is presented. Each lesson has an estimated time of completion which I found to be a bit too optimistic but not too far off. The relevant concepts are explained first and these are followed by step by step instructions on how to perform a specific task. Example code related to the task being described is included. At the end of each chapter (not lesson), there is a lab section that contains several exercises for the reader to perform to ensure proper learning. The completed labs are on the CD-ROM that comes with the set. This is very helpful in identifying by comparison anything wrong that you might have done on these exercises.
The CD-ROM that comes with the set has the entire set in electronic form, completed labs, practice files, and exam questions. The set also comes with a DVD that has a 60 day trial version of Visual Studio.NET 2003 Professional. The paper is very thin and these are paperbacks and not hardcover editions. I personally like the thinner paper as it is easier to carry the individual books around.
The prerequisites for using this set are a knowledge of controls & events, SQL, and other basic programming concepts. I think this set is aimed at users that are at a beginner or intermediate level. One advanced user I talked to wasn't as impressed with this set as I was.
The only downside to the set that I found was the intermingling of VB.NET and VC#.NET code throughout the books. I found this very annoying as I am interested in only the VB.NET portions. But I guess this could be a positive if you haven't decided which path to take or are planning on mixing the exams that you take.
The best part about these books is that there are so many practice questions for each exam! After researching other preparatory material online, I found that most vendors are not including that many practice questions. So getting these many questions (550 total in the set) for such a low price made it really worthwhile for me.
I would recommend getting the training guides by Mike Gunderloy (Que Certification series) that I am finding to be the best tools for exam preparation. But it doesn't hurt to get this Microsoft set considering the exam fee discount reduces the price of the set and the number of questions included is great!
Overall, don't hesitate to get this set if you are sure that you are going to take the exams. But use the set as a secondary and not a primary preparation tool. Good luck learning .NET and passing the exams!
Update on 5/5/2005: This review is old so please check with Amazon if the kit still comes with the vouchers before purchasing. I remember seeing an expiration date on those vouchers so it's quite possible they don't include the vouchers with the kit anymore.MCAD/MCSD Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft (2nd Edition) .NET Core Requirements, Exams 70-305, 70-315, 70-306, 70-316, 70-310, 70-320, and 70-300 box vol. set Overview

Big C++ ReviewThis is an excellent textbook written by knowledgeable authors. Horstmann teaches at San Jose State University in California. He has in-depth knowledge of C++, having written the Safe STL library. He also writes for the Sun Core Java series of books.
Although the book is large, it can be used for a 2 or 3 semester sequence of courses in software development using C++. After covering fundamentals, the authors cover advanced topics with modern relevance. Chapter 13 on Object-Oriented Design discusses the software development life cycle, Class-Responsibility-Collaboration using CRC cards, and gives practical tips for implementing class associations. Other advanced topics include templates (similar to generics), the C++ Standard Template Library, design patterns, GUI's, Relational Databases (using MySQL), and XML. Appendices cover C++ Language Coding Guidelines, and legacy C/C++ topics.
The authors' writing style is very clear and easy for college freshmen to understand. The Random Facts sections help make the textbook interesting, and cover topics such as: Computing History, the First Bug, the Therac-25 bug (an ethical issue), the Ariane Rocket incident, etc.
Sample code can be found at the author's website at:
http://www.horstmann.com/bigcpp.html
and also at the Wiley publisher higher education website:
http://he-cda.wiley.com/WileyCDA/ (search by author for Horstmann). The book is well organized with a good set of end-of-chapter exercises, programming problems, and references for further reading.
We have adopted this textbook for a 2-sequence course in object-oriented software development. I highly recommend it.Big C++ OverviewThis proven author team combines their professional and academic experience to offer the most relevant and comprehensive introduction to programming and C++. * Authors combine professional and academic experience to offer the most relevant introduction to programming and C++ * Offers comprehensive examination of computer science, programming principles, and the C++ language * Covers advanced C++ topics, such as operator overloading, memory management, polymorphism, and more * Thorough coverage of STL * Integration of current technologies, such as UML and patterns

C++ Programming: Program Design Including Data Structures, Third Edition ReviewBy about page 689 I had read the word "suppose" once too often. Mr. Malik's coherence fell apart when he got to the object-oriented stuff, and he started to use examples to *start* explanations. His meandering paragraphs begun with the word "suppose" are generally not helpful. Don't let chapter 12 (Inheritance and composition) discourage you, though. It's the worst of them and it gets better after that.
If you like to highlight your textbooks you will be frustrated by this book. You will spend a lot of time pondering if you really want to highlight an entire 12-line paragraph when what is explained could be stated in a single sentence. So, here's a hint: Read each section between the purple headings through before highlighting anything. Sometimes you'll find your concise sentence further on. If you don't, make use of the white space to write one yourself. This will aid in memory, and save your highlighter.
This should have been a shorter book, and the object-oriented stuff should have received some editing for clearer, more concise language.
The example code is redundant and the explanations unnecessarily long. Each problem is exhaustively set up and explained, with code segments that are duplicated in the finalized code. You'll find yourself skipping the setup of the problem and going right to the finalized code to see if you understand it, and invariably you will, because it is not complex. The examples are uninteresting and demonstrate things that are simple.
One really nice feature of this book? You don't have to get 300 pages into it before it will lie flat on your desk. It stays open nicely and has bright, white pages.
A summary of the contents:
One chapter on computers, programming languages, the process of writing a program, and a description of and background on C++.
Almost six hundred pages on non-object-oriented C++ language stuff. It does not assume you already know programming. Tiringly verbose, but seems comprehensive and well-organized.
About 350 pages on the object-oriented features of C++. It's not difficult material but it's not explained coherently. If this is the stuff you are most interested in you will be disappointed.
About 300 pages on applying C++ to algorithms, such as searching and sorting, liked lists and binary trees. Classic first-year CS course material. Perhaps the best-presented part of the book.
A chapter on the Standard Template Library.C++ Programming: Program Design Including Data Structures, Third Edition OverviewIntended for a two-semester course covering CS1 and CS2 topics, this text contains numerous clear and complete explanations and examples. With a strong focus on problem-solving, the book offers comprehensive coverage of introductory C++ programming topics and then moves the students confidently into more advanced concepts. Each chapter contains classroom-tested pedagogical features, including full-color code and comments, syntax boxes with explanation and examples, and complete programming exercises. All programs and exercises have been quality assurance tested with Microsoft Visual C++ .NET, available as an optional compiler with the text.

Starting Out with Java: From Control Structures through Objects (3rd Edition) ReviewWhy pay $122 for this edition when it has no new information in it and the 3rd edition costs $9.27 used. This book is used for my 2 course class. The first course I took required the 3rd edition and I am going to take the second course that requires the 4th edition. When I looked at the 4th edition, I was shocked that someone would write a new edition that didn't contain any new information. Now, I'm not saying this is not a great book. I loved this book. This edition should never have been written. Don't take my word for it. Here is what the book itself says. In Preface titled "Changes in This Edition" it says "Improved Qrganization in Chapter 3". That means he moved some things around, no new information in Chapter 3. "New In the Spotlight Sections" This is new, it is additional problems with detailed analysis. This is nice for reinforcing what's taught, but it doesn't teach anything new. "Video Notes" These are viodes on the website to accompany the text. This is nice to reforce the text learning, but no new information there. You can get the early edition and go to the website and view the videos without buying this edition. "Additional Programming Problems" This is nice but it had suficiant problems to start with. NO NEW INFO. If this text is required by your class, ask the teacher if you can use the previous edition. That is what I'm doing.Starting Out with Java: From Control Structures through Objects (3rd Edition) OverviewKEY BENEFIT: In Starting Out with Java: From Control Structures through Objects,Gaddis covers procedural programming—control structures andmethods—before introducing objects in the latter part of the book. Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation ReviewThis book is the comprehensive text for anyone working on an optimizing compiler for uniprocessor systems. It gives good detail on all major approaches and is up-to-date on important techniques like SSA form and partial redundancy information. As someone working directly in the field, it's saved me the effort of hunting up original research papers in many areas. One drawback for this book as a practical tool: the pseudocode used to illustrate examples is often pretty far from being suitable for real implementations.
A warning: this is not an introductory book, and people who want to learn about the basics of building a compiler should look elsewhere; perhaps Andrew Appel's ``Modern Compilers'' series. Muchnick's book is for people who want to write compilers which generate high-performance code.Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation Overview
From the Foreword by Susan L. Graham: This book takes on the challenges of contemporary languages and architectures, and prepares the reader for the new compiling problems that will inevitably arise in the future.
The definitive book on advanced compiler design This comprehensive, up-to-date work examines advanced issues in the design and implementation of compilers for modern processors. Written for professionals and graduate students, the book guides readers in designing and implementing efficient structures for highly optimizing compilers for real-world languages. Covering advanced issues in fundamental areas of compiler design, this book discusses a wide array of possible code optimizations, determining the relative importance of optimizations, and selecting the most effective methods of implementation.* Lays the foundation for understanding the major issues of advanced compiler design* Treats optimization in-depth* Uses four case studies of commercial compiling suites to illustrate different approaches to compiler structure, intermediate-code design, and optimization-these include Sun Microsystems's compiler for SPARC, IBM's for POWER and PowerPC, DEC's for Alpha, and Intel's for Pentium an related processors* Presents numerous clearly defined algorithms based on actual cases* Introduces Informal Compiler Algorithm Notation (ICAN), a language devised by the author to communicate algorithms effectively to people

uC/OS-III, The Real-Time Kernel, or a High Performance, Scalable, ROMable, Preemptive, Multitasking Kernel for Microprocessors, Microcontrollers & DSPs (Board NOT Included) ReviewI bought this book in the hope of looking at the newly updated version of the source (from reading the book's description at Amazon). However, it is not available, unless you are willing to pay $9,999. That renders the book as a reference manual, which is essentially useless; plus the evaluation board is just a toy. Since ucos-ii was available in source code, I seriously doubt the author's intent of publishing such a heftily priced book. If you want to learn an RTOS, take a look at something else, such as VxWorks, which is widely accepted and well documented. Yes, I will return the book, along with the evaluation board, which is still sealed.uC/OS-III, The Real-Time Kernel, or a High Performance, Scalable, ROMable, Preemptive, Multitasking Kernel for Microprocessors, Microcontrollers & DSPs (Board NOT Included) OverviewThis book puts the spotlight on how a real-time kernel works. Using Micrium's uC/OS-III as a reference, the book consists of two complete parts. The first describes real-time kernels in generic terms. Part II provides examples to the reader, using STMicroelectronics' STM32F107 microcontroller, based on the popular ARM Cortex-M3 architecture. A companion evaluation board (uC/Eval-STM32F107) NOT INCLUDED, and tools (IAR Systems Embedded Workbench for ARM), enable the reader to be up and running quickly, and have an amazing hands-on experience, leading to a high level of proficiency. This book is written for serious embedded systems programmers, consultants, hobbyists, and students interested in understanding the inner workings of a real-time kernel. uC/OS-III is not just a great learning platform, but also a full commercial-grade software package, ready to be part of a wide range of products. uC/OS-III is a highly portable, ROMable, scalable, preemptive real-time, multitasking kernel designed specifically to address the demanding requirements of today's embedded systems. uC/OS-III is the successor to the highly popular uC/OS-II real-time kernel but can use most of uC/OS-II's ports with minor modifi cations. Some of the features of uC/OS-III are: Preemptive multitasking with round-robin scheduling of tasks at the same priority Supports an unlimited number of tasks and other kernel objects Rich set of services: semaphores, mutual exclusion semaphores with full priority inheritance, event flags, message queues, timers, fixed-size memory block management, and more Built-in performance measurements

Code Complete (Microsoft Programming Series) ReviewAbout previous comments: Verbose? Don't think so, every page has some piece of valuable information
For beginners only? Don't think so, but if you are a beginner this is a good place to start. After several years of programming you'll mostly stop thinking about style and follow your habits... so you better have some good habits!
Insistence on using hungarian naming convention? Not at all, did you read this book? The author did talk about this convention but he also gives examples why this is can be bad (and also why it can be good).
This book covers a wide range of material, from variable declaration to software estimation and probably everything concerning software construction.
Also as this book talks a lot about style, the best thing is it is backed up with hard facts not just because of personal preference.
The examples are written in several languages (such as C, Pascal and Basic). One chapter is devoted to object orientation. Although you're heavily into OOP then in no way should you skip over this book as the advices in this book can be applied to every methodology of programming. So this book is in no way out dated.
Each chapter has a 'recommended reading' section so you know where to go for more. This is extremely handy.
I've read this book several times and I just love it. I own every book written by the author. Check them out also - they are very good too.
Summary: This book teaches you how you can write good and self-describing code. I wished every program I've had to read had been written by programmers who read this book and applied that knowledge.
Thanks, ABOCode Complete (Microsoft Programming Series) OverviewHere is a thorough expert look at the intricate process of commercial software development. The text is rich in example code, contains powerful insights on managing technical yet creative people, and examines each milestone in software development in considerable detail. Ideal for professional, self-taught, and student programmers.

Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache in 24 Hours ReviewI have been a mainframe programmer for 13 years and have done web design for the past year. The following is my experience with this book.
First the good news:

1. I was able to successfully install PHP, Apache & MySQL.
2. I was able to successfully complete all the projects in the book.
3. I published one of my projects on a website.
Now the bad news:
1. There were critical typos in the book--not just captions under the wrong pictures but incorrect code. I spent many hours debugging the PHP code for the projects. The code errors I found were not in the errata on the SAMS website OR on thickbook.com. I sent one code correction to the editors and received an acknowledgement, but I just checked and the code typo is not included in the errata. There are code errors on pp. 245, 406, 417. E-mail me if you are also having problems with the code on those pages as the SAMS people do not seem to be concerned or aware of these errors.
2. The installation of the products did not go as smoothly as I hoped either. The instructions on what to download did not match how the websites now look. There was some missing information. I was able to get it all working only with a lot of trial and error.
This book contained projects that I was interested in learning: address book, storefront, shopping cart. With a little more diligence on the part of the proofreaders and technical editors, this book would have been great and I would have given it 5 stars.Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache in 24 Hours OverviewSams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL, and Apache in 24 Hours combines coverage of these three popular open-source Web development tools into one easy-to-understand book -- and it comes with one easy-to-use Starter Kit CD-ROM for Windows or Linux. The book teaches the reader to install, configure and set up the PHP scripting language, the MySQL database system, and the Apache Web server.By the end of this book the reader will understand how these technologies work, and -- more importantly -- how they can work together to create a dynamic Web site. After creating a simple Web site using these tools, the reader will be able to manage a simple mailing list, and to create an online address book, shopping cart, and storefront. The book also teaches the reader how to fine tune Apache and MySQL, and covers simple Web server security.

Head First C# ReviewHead First C# was my first experience with the Head First series, although I have since also purchased the excellent Head First Design Patterns (Head First).
This book is designed to teach you C# from the beginning. Technical books can generally be categorized as either tutorials or reference texts -- and this is absolutely in the tutorial category. It's intended to be read and worked through in order, from start to finish. If you already know C# and are looking for a reference text, look elsewhere. If you're an experienced C++ programmer looking to learn C# but are already very familiar with object oriented programming, consider checking out the excellent and concise Accelerated C# 2008 (Accelerated). If you're an experienced C# programmer and just want to learn the advanced features of C#2 and C#3, you'll again want to look elsewhere, and you couldn't do better than C# in Depth: What you need to master C# 2 and 3.
But if you want to *learn* C# and object-oriented programming, and especially if you have little or no prior programming experience, look no further than this fantastic book. If you're reading reviews of the book, then you probably know two things: it has an unusual style and some quirky humor, and it has a bit more than it's fair share of errors. These two things are true, but there's a lot more about the book that you should know, and that's mostly what I want to talk about in this review. Before I move on, though, let me say two things. First, the conversational style and the humor are sometimes overstated -- this is a book about programming, and it's not a joke a minute or anything. I know that you can't Search Inside here on Amazon to see what the book is like, which I assume is because of the visuals-heavy design and unusual layout of the text, but just do a quick search for the book's website and you can download a full sample chapter and some other excerpts. Judge for yourself before dismissing an excellent book based on its unusual (but effective!) design. Second, the errata *are* extensive, but they don't get in the way of your learning. This book shines for its well-chosen examples, its focus on your learning (you'll be talked to rather than at), and its great overall structure -- and none of the errata interfere with any of that at all. If the extensive errata lists do bother you, I wrote a small free program that can sort through them for you and filter out the types of errors or page ranges you're not interested in. (You can find the link stickied at the web forum for Head First C#.)
There are also some features of the book that I don't see mentioned often enough, and which I want to comment on briefly before getting to the heart of the review. First, I love that the introduction is actually useful, giving you valuable insights on why the authors made the design choices they did (why text is in the pictures, rather than beneath them as captions, for example), and offering advice on how best to approach the book if you want to maximize your learning experience. I highly recommend reading it. Second, it's worth mentioning the way that the book uses the (free) Visual Studio 2008 IDE to make graphical Windows applications throughout, rather than focusing on a text editor and console applications like many other introductory texts. Visual Studio is a powerful IDE, and it *helps* you learn with syntax highlighting and Intellisense -- I'm very glad that the Head First C# authors chose to incorporate its use into the book, because it often allowed me to focus on concepts at first rather than syntax, picking that up gradually through repeated use with the IDE's guidance. Third, you'll be making some genuinely impressive software over the course of the book -- between the use of Visual Studio and the authors' being unafraid to assign projects that take several pages just to *describe*, you'll get a much better feel for what it's like to make real software than you would from the small "toy" examples that are more common in many other introductory books. (But don't worry, there's plenty of guidance, including fully annotated solution code for most of them, and a helpful web forum if you get stuck.) Finally, the book has the advantage of going to print for the first time after C# 3.0 and .NET 3.5 were released, and it fluently combines the various iterations of the language, teaching C# *as it now exists* from the ground up in an order that makes sense for someone learning now from scratch, rather than taking the more common but less sensible route of introducing C#1.0 features before C#2 before C#3. This is great, because it allows the authors to introduce some of the powerful and convenient features of the newer editions of the language and framework -- the stuff that really makes C# appealing as a language -- quite early in the book.
The funny thing about Head First C# is that the conversational tone, the humor, the quirky layout, and the pictures make the book seem completely un-academic. At first glance, it's as far from an academic textbook as you could possibly get! But I've come to realize that reading through the book from the beginning, doing all the exercises, is as close to the structured learning experience of an academic course as you can get in book form. The brilliance of Head First C# isn't in the phrasing of any given sentence or the coding style in a particular snippet -- it's in the overall structure of the book and especially in the examples chosen for exercises, which allow you to build up your knowledge incrementally while still reviewing past material. (Which is why the errata really aren't a big deal.) I've seen some reviews point out the book's "redundancy" as a flaw, and I just shake my head. The book is often repetitious, but never redundant, and always deliberately -- seeing the same material repeatedly from different perspectives and at different times is absolutely key to learning anything, and the repetition is one of the best features of the Head First series in general and this book in particular.
So there are errors. So there's a bit of fuzziness in the phrasing sometimes. So it doesn't cover Advanced Language Topic A or B. So what? This book is a teaching tool. It's a full course -- instructor, fellow students, textbook, homework, projects, review sessions, and conversations with peers -- stuffed onto paper, rolled up, printed, and stuck between covers.
I've learned C#, and I've *retained* what I've learned. I've had fun doing it. And if you too want to learn C# and programming, I can't recommend Head First C# highly enough.Head First C# Overview
Head First C# is a complete learning experience for object-oriented programming, C#, and the Visual Studio IDE. Built for your brain, this book covers C# 3.0 and Visual Studio 2008, and teaches everything from language fundamentals to advanced topics including garbage collection, extension methods, and double-buffered animation. You'll also master C#'s hottest and newest syntax, LINQ, for querying SQL databases, .NET collections, and XML documents. By the time you're through, you'll be a proficient C# programmer, designing and coding large-scale applications. Every few chapters you will come across a lab that lets you apply what you've learned up to that point. Each lab is designed to simulate a professional programming task, increasing in complexity until-at last-you build a working Invaders game, complete with shooting ships, aliens descending while firing, and an animated death sequence for unlucky starfighters. This remarkably engaging book will have you going from zero to 60 with C# in no time flat.

Java Programming: Advanced Topics, Third Edition ReviewAs Java is my sixth programming language I have a fair bit of experience with these type of books, and all I can say is that this is the worst I have ever come across. It has no sense of progression and it does not seem to have the idea of learning in mind at all - ie progressing from simple to more complex... It seems to be written for people who already know Java entirely and are wanting some kind of refresher, but its not very good as a reference either, so I actually don't know who would find this book useful....whats particularly annoying is that its not actually an advanced book, but the authors manage to make simple concepts as obscure and complicated as possible, so you struggle for ages trying to understand, and once it finally clicks, you feel almost cheated.
The writing is very repetitive too - by chapter 15 why are they still telling you that "the structure of the package mirrors the file system, so you can find the code for this example in ...."before EVERY single code example? It sounds like a stupid complaint, but I swear that sentence alone is responsible for about 5 pages of this book.
If you are forced to buy this book by your uni or college as I was, my advice is that you read it cover to cover several times, and don't be too concerned with understanding it the first or second time... you need the later chapters to understand the earlier chapters properly. I think the best way to read it is to start with the chapter end summary, then try and figure out the code example and discussion, and only after that confuse yourself with the actual chapter. It is not comprehensive and you are likely to spend a lot of time on the net (your cash would be better spent printing out Suns java tutorial) and using other books instead.
It is also horribly biased to IBM VisualAge for Java, as Wigglesworth was one of the developers, and the first bit of advice given to me by senior students at my uni was to rather use anything else, even javac, than that peice of...
To be fair, the questions are quite good and challenging, but as others have said, its kinda pointless without access to the answers.
The unfortunate effect of all this is that you end up frustrated with Java itself rather than just this badly put together book.Java Programming: Advanced Topics, Third Edition OverviewThis highly-anticipated, thoroughly updated revision incorporates exciting changes and updates and is perfect for a second course in Java! This new edition now begins where a first course leaves off, and includes advanced topics such as JavaBeans, Enterprise JavaBeans, Network Programming, J2EE features, and Security. All concepts are reinforced through code examples, sample programs, and exercises. Take your Java programming skills to the next level with this text!

Murach's Java SE 6: Training & Reference ReviewThere have been a number of books and tutorials written about Java. The gold standard for me has always been "Learning Java" by Patrick Niemeyer and Johnathan Knudsen (O'Reilly & Associates). I have had a number of new programmers, enthusiasts, and members of the JUG tell me it is information overload. The book does contain a lot of information in its 828 page heft. As a result, I have been looking for a book just for beginners. I have found it.
I just completed reviewing Murach's Java SE 6. It is a very good resource for learning Java. This book does an excellent job of providing a firm basis for understanding the technology. The book is clearly and concisely written. The book is divided into 5 major sections which cover the essential Java skills to advanced topics on data access programming using XML and JDBC.
The teaching style is very clever. It typically takes the form of a page of information with facing page with examples. I found this to be very important in getting sometimes difficult points across. I typically take the "Show me the code" philosophy, and this style works for me.
The other technique that used is to convey a purpose for learning Java. This is done by using the various topics as building blocks to create an application. The final result is a completed application at the end of the book. It encompasses the lessons learned, and gives the new programmer a sense of accomplishment with a completed functional application at the end of the book. I love it.
I have found that people learn better with functional code examples. This book is replete with them. One of my greatest annoyances is to have code samples which do not work. This clouds the ability to learn because it forces the beginning programmer to question their abilities. The shroud of uncertainty should not be because the gold standard code is incorrect. I am pleased to note that I tried a number of code examples and they all worked.
My favorite section is Data access programming with Java. Chapter 20 covers working with XML. This is a must for any programmer. XML is the new black, and anything that can help you learn this important technology is a must. In chapter 20, the topic of StAX is covered. This is the best simplified example of using StAX I have seen. After reading the information, and performing the examples, I felt I had a better understanding of this technology.
I only have a few minor negative points to mention: the title is a little misleading. The majority of the information in the book really details Java SE 5 enhancements with two notable exceptions: StAX and an introduction to Derby (Java DB).
My overall impression is that the book is an outstanding resource for new and seasoned programmers. This is a great book to add to the reference shelf.Murach's Java SE 6: Training & Reference OverviewThis book teaches how to develop Java applications at the professional level. It starts by showing how to code, test, and debug everyday business applications that won t crash. It presents object-oriented features like classes, inheritance, interfaces, and polymorphism in a way that s both understandable and useful in the real world...perspective that s often missing in Java training. It presents essential Java skills such as working with data types, control statements, arrays, collections, generics, enumerations, exceptions, threads, Swing components, applets, and text and binary files. It covers new Java SE 6 features such as new JDBC features, the StAX XML API, and the built-in Derby database. And it s all done in the distinctive Murach style that has been training professional programmers for more than 30 years.

Java Network Programming (Java (O'Reilly)) ReviewAvoid. This book appears to have quite a reputation, but despite being in its 2nd edition, it is riddled with errors. The book exhibits some fundamental misapprehensions about TCP/IP; as a result it perpetrates some astonishing misinformation, much of it quite basic. Partial list: the nature of a socket close operation; what IOException when closing a socket means; what happens when the listen backlog is exceeded; specification of the ServerSocket constructors; Nagle's algorithm (Socket.setTcpNoDelay); linger; keepalive; etc etc.
Of the examples which do work, the PortScanner and LocalPortScanner are provided in versions which perpetrate atrocities on the local machine and network by not closing sockets. Multi-homing very cursorily treated, not even indexed. Firewalls apparently treated in one page. Role of TTL in multicast apparently ignored.
The text is verbose and repetitive, and a number of the examples are irrelevant. Fully 50% of the Sockets for Servers chapter consists of a rather irrelevant excursion into HTTP and HTML; the examples have bugs, not that they have much point. Also, what pray have HTML rendering and parsing in Swing got to do with networking? 30 irrelevant pages on this; nice to have, but why here?
Author seems to think HotSpot is a JIT. Typos in the index, not encouraging. Many impending JDK 1.4 enhancements will shortly obsolete this book. Avoid it. For TCP/IP and UDP fundamentals, buy W.R. Stevens Unix Network Programming. -Java Network Programming (Java (O'Reilly)) Overview
Java Network Programming, 2nd Edition, is a complete introductionto developing network programs (both applets and applications) using Java, covering everything from Networking fundamentals to remote methodinvocation (RMI).It includes chapters on TCP and UDP sockets, multicastingprotocol and content handlers, and servlets. This second edition alsoincludes coverage of Java 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3.New chapters cover multithreadednetwork programming, I/O, HTML parsing and display, the Java Mail API,the Java Secure Sockets Extension, and more.

JavaScript and Ajax for the Web, Sixth Edition ReviewThe audience for this book is beginning/novice web developers with a knowledge of HTML but not of JavaScript. The book begins with an introduction to basic JavaScript language features and then proceeds to work through a number of examples according to category (images, frames, browser windows, forms, regular expressions and strings, user events, and cookies). After, there are two chapters on AJAX fundamentals.
The book does not claim to be an in-depth resource. The general purpose of the QuickStart series of books is to provide an overview of the main concepts and practices in use by web developers today. It is meant to be a STARTING POINT to introduce novices to technologies, not as an in-depth reference. The authors of this and other QuickStart books point this out continually, yet still get bad reviews from people who have not taken the time to read about the purposes of various series from technical publishers. This is unfortunate for the public as well as unfair to the authors.
A previous reviewer mentioned what he took to be atrocious coverage of Ajax. The book contains two chapters exclusively covering Ajax. The first covers the fundamental techniques used to take advantage of this combination of technologies. The second chapter explores some of the popular Ajax toolkits currently available. This is consistent with the purpose of the book. Some readers may be interested in heading down the development path, yet others may be more interested in design and in using pre-existing tools. This book caters to both and has no intention of deceiving either reader.
The following quote is a good example of this. It is an excerpt from the title page of Chapter 16, which follows the introductory chapter (basic XMLHttpRequest usage, etc.) and precedes the Ajax toolkit chapter:
"[Writing] Ajax applications can be difficult. They often require a great deal of knowledge of working with the DOM, CSS, JavaScript, and server resources. Since this is a book for beginning scripters, we've shown you how to do some easy things with Ajax, so you can see that learning Ajax techniques is well within your reach. But many books have been written that are completely devoted to showing intermediate-to-advanced scripters how to create Ajax applications, and our Ajax chapters are no substitute for that kind of in-depth exploration."
As for the dual-column formatting that some reviewers disliked, it is consistent with the formatting of the entire QuickStart series, as well as the QuickPro series of the same publisher. The format is nice for tackling specific techniques in a concise amount of space. It is not as abstractly engaging as conventional technical books, but it is not meant to be. The format is excellent for explaining techniques (especial design techniques) as well as for conveying a sense of quick forward momentum.
I've only recently started reading books from Peachpit Press. I like these books because they get me up to speed quickly, and act as a comprehensive starting point, allowing me to understand "where I need to go from here."
This book is excellent as a broad introduction with lots of real-world examples. If you're a novice web developer with a decent grasp of HTML wishing for a comprehensive introduction to JavaScript and practical JavaScript techniques, this is the book for you.
However, if you're well-grounded and are looking for more in-depth coverage of JavaScript and Ajax techniques, "Professional JavaScript for Web Developers" (Nicholas Zakas / Wrox Press) and "Professional Ajax" (Zakas, et. al. / Wrox Press) are excellent in-depth resources geared toward real-world professional development, and both are among the best peer-reviewed titles in existence on these subjects.JavaScript and Ajax for the Web, Sixth Edition OverviewNeed to learn JavaScript fast? Professional C++ (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis is a very readable and helpful guide to C++ OOP. It is meant to be a programming guide rather than merely covering syntax (as C++ Primer does for example). As it says on the back cover, "You'll learn simple, powerful techniques used by C++ professionals, little-known features that will make your life easier, and reusable coding patterns that will bring your basic C++ skills to the professional level."
Coming into this with extensive C and other programming experience, including some C++ many years ago, this book was ideal for me. I especially appreciated the authors' ability to give a very good foundation for developing well-designed, robust C++ code. I went from a very solid C programmer to developing using a new C++ mentality in a couple of weeks.
The authors are obviously quite experienced and knowledgeable in C++ and OOP, and write in an enjoyable, easy-to-follow manner. They don't just present C++, they discuss every aspect of how to develop great code using C++. They take a very reasonable and competent approach to coding, pointing out pitfalls and providing much guidance together with good explanations of their reasoning. This book doesn't just tell you how you can do something in C++, it explains how to do it well.
Professional C++ is for an intermediate to advanced programmer with either some C++ experience or a good deal of other programming experience. It is not meant to be an exhaustive exposition of C++ (although it does cover all the basics of the language), but it is certainly sufficient to get a developer not only up and coding, but doing so with better style and more competence than many seasoned C++ professionals.
Some of the many topics I found interesting and useful include: code reuse, software engineering methods (including a several page synopsis of extreme programming), exceptions, STL, frameworks, and design patterns. On some important topics that could be books in themselves, enough material is presented here to give the reader a basic understanding of the subject and an awareness of the issues so that the reader can decide whether to pursue the subject further.
Although this book was all I really needed to get up and going, I found a couple other books also quite helpful, in particular "Object Oriented Design Heuristics" by Arthur J. Riel and the new third edition of "Effective C++" by Scott Meyers.
Professional C++ (Programmer to Programmer) Overview
Geared to experienced C++ developers who may not be familiar with the more advanced features of the language, and therefore are not using it to its full capabilities
Teaches programmers how to think in C++-that is, how to design effective solutions that maximize the power of the language
The authors drill down into this notoriously complex language, explaining poorly understood elements of the C++ feature set as well as common pitfalls to avoid
Contains several in-depth case studies with working code that's been tested on Windows, Linux, and Solaris platforms

PHP and MySQL Web Development ReviewThis is such a good book that I wanted to take the time to write a review and give it 5 stars, which it richly deserves. The other glowing reviews helped me to choose this book over others, and they were right on the money.
I'm an experienced C/C++ programmer on Windows, but I knew nothing about PHP and MySQL -- and very little about Apache and Unix -- prior to opening this book. I've now read about 80% of it and, in the process, I've built a commercial-grade Website with user registration and shopping cart facilities, which was my objective. Reading this book was a very efficient use of my time -- it gave me exactly what I needed to build a practical Web application system with PHP and MySQL, and very little extraneous stuff.
The main prerequisite for this book is a working knowledge of HTML, and just a little background in procedural programming. Some of the earliest examples use HTML tags for tables and forms, with PHP use thoroughly explained, but without many notes on the HTML. A beginning programmer can learn effectively from this book, but as an experienced programmer I felt that it also worked well to bring me up to speed quickly on a new language.
Another value of this book not mentioned in other reviews are the many good recommendations for organizing your PHP code (applying basic software engineering principles) as your Web application gets larger and more complex. Many, many Websites have been built haphazardly and are now difficult to maintain because they haven't followed the excellent advice in this book.
I did notice the typos mentioned by other reviewers, but after reading 80% of this (867-page) book I feel they are very minor and really do not detract from the book significantly at all.
All in all, this is one of those rare books that is probably worth ten times the amount that you pay for it, and much more if you use it effectively.PHP and MySQL Web Development OverviewPHP & MySQL Web Development teaches the reader to develop dynamic, secure e-commerce Web sites and Web applications. The book shows how to integrate and implement these technologies by following real-world examples and working sample projects. It also covers the related technologies needed to build a commercial Web site such as SSL, shopping carts, and payment systems. The CD includes a Linux distribution, MySQL, PHP4 and utilities for the projects and code listings.

Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035 & 310-027) ReviewI do strongly recommend this book for anyone willing to pass the SCJP exam,
even though, it is very important for you to know that it does not cover ALL
possible content you will find in the real exam, will cover most yes, but
not all. If you are newbie you would not notice (dangerous) but if you do have
experience, sometimes you will feel like going and find by yourself some
gaps in the book. If you are the kind go for all 100% getter I do strongly recommend
using additional study materials as complement and even more, use your favorite
development environment to test all gaps or questions you might find which are
not covered in the book.
Pros:
- The book covers nicely most of the exam objectives.
- It is a breeze to read it, I have even had friends asking me what was this
comedy about. I did really enjoy reading it. I did not find any bad jokes,
I think I would enjoy a party with the authors, we have the same sense of humor.
- The book is 100% reliable, perfectly accurate, if the content is in the book
it is right. As far as I can tell, I did not find one single question error or
wrong concept and I made all self tests in the book and I consider myself a
really meticulous guy (this is a MUST requirement for any study material, there
are many inaccurate books and preparation materials with flawed concepts). Not
studying or keeping your concepts from experience is even better than studying it
wrong, this book only does good. The authors gained my entire trust, I will look only
for them when looking for further Java certification books.

- After reading it I was EVEN able to spot few really flawed questions in my
third-party training software!!! this speaks by itself. They (third-party training
software support) were very surprised at that, I asked them how could I rely on a
training software with few flawed questions and their answer was "you are really
prepared, this proof you really master the concepts and that you are ready for the
test", thanks to this book.
Cons:
- Bear in mind there are (I would say) many uncovered concepts or topics related to the
exam, this book is not an exhaustive Java reference and some of the uncovered content
can easily appear in the test, these bellow are the kind of questions left unanswered/uncovered
that you would have to find out BY YOURSELF somewhere else and you might be surprised to
find in the exam e.g.

. What are Daemon type threads how they behave differently from non-daemon threads?
. Are static variables initialized as instance variables with default values?
. some exotic declarations e.g. can you tell about this one? "int[] a, b[];" here
you have an array and a matrix.
. Converting Octal/Hex/Binary/Decimal.
. Operators precedence!!!
. Are assertions considered as a return statement with the compiler
returning the kind of "line X is unreachable because of a previous assert false;"?
. Is there an inner classes nesting limit?
. How can you refer to the instance of the outmost class from the nested 2nd level
deep non-static inner class?
. Can methods return references to (method) locally declared inner classes, if so
how can that be referenced/used from outside? as Object?
. Possible valid access modifiers for (method) locally declared inner classes?

- The software included with the book is in my opinion very bad quality, not
the content of the questions (I never did any) but the applications, the
selftest software included with the book is a very small sized frame
no-resizable that you would have to scroll back and forth for reading
any question, extremelly annoying. Additionally the bonus stuff on internet
I could never download because of some errors in the pages, I finally gave
up about using it.
I had the SCJP 1.4 exam last friday 09/03/2004 passing with 95% and this was my
passing formula:
- I have more than 5 years experience programming in Java and C++.
- Reading this book. It took me one calendar week to go through the complete
book (SCJP part) with questions and everything. I am in holidays and invested
4 days for studying :-) on top of one weekend. Not to mention this book
was my pillow for this complete week. But you can reeeeally enjoy reading
it, I read most of it on Parade Platz, Movenpick, having Movenpick chocolate
ice creams, if you are Swiss you know what I am talking about ... the ice cream
helped a lot.

- I practiced mostly using SelfTest Software http://www.selftestsoftware.com
training to track my progress.

- I had already the Brainbench certification Master in Java 1 & 2,
http://www.brainbench.com. I recommend having the Brainbench Java 2
test or preparation before going to the SCJP. Brainbench has the toughest
tests I have ever experienced, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere!!!
But understand that Brainbench test objectives are much broader.

These are some nice statistics you can use as a reference, these are the results
of my preparation compared to the results in the actual exam, I think there is a
clear correlation:
SelfTest questions included in the book (I did each only once after reading the corresponding
chapter, does not make sense doing many times, the idea is not to memorize), however writing
what (and why) you did wrong is very useful to focus your studying efforts even further:
Chapter 1- Language Fundamentals 17/20 (85%)
Chapter 2- Declarations and Access Control 10/15 (66%)
Chapter 3- Operators and Assigments17/18 (94%)
Chapter 4- Flow Control, Exceptions and Assertions 14/20 (70%)
Chapter 5- OO Overloading and Overriding ... 21/21 (100%)
Chapter 6- java.lang Math, Strings, Wrappers 15/19 (78%)
Chapter 7- Objects and Collections 12/15 (80%)
Chapter 8- Inner classes 8/12 (66%)
Chapter 9- Threads 18/21 (85%)
These are my overall results of doing simulation tests using third-party
SelfTest software during my studying of the book:
first try - 66% (without studying)
second try - 72%
third try - 85%
fourth try - 100%
These are my results in the actual exam overall passing 95%:
Language Fundamentals 90%
Declarations and Access control 100%
Operators and Assigments 87%
Flow Control, Assertions, and Exception Handling 100%
Overloading, Overriding, Runtime Type and OO100%
Fundamental Classes in the java.lang package100%
The Collections Framework 100%
Garbage Collection100%
Threads 87%
One last note, do not cheat yourself, do not use BRAINDUMPS, try
instead to deeply understand all concepts. Additionally
the "serialization" mechanism for BD is not actually reliable,
I looked at those for curiousity and it was pure crap.
I hope you enjoy reading the book too, Good luck!Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035 & 310-027) Overview

Understanding Object-Oriented Programming With Java ReviewThis is not a book to learn java from, nor is it even a good reference. Read and understand the title before buying this book.
This review refers to the previous edition to this one.
I found the text ordered well, with most examples clearly explained. There were some minor bugs in the code which a beginning java programmer would struggle with.
After finishing the book, and running the examples, and working through several of the exercises, I found that I understand OOP much better, and of course understand java better too.
I've noted several people who don't know java syntax are frustrated by the book, as they are expecting to learn java from it, and are never reaching the point where they will learn OOP or java from the book.
In conclusion, don't buy the book to learn java, buy it only if you need to learn OOP and are having difficulty doing so.Understanding Object-Oriented Programming With Java OverviewTimothy Budd, leading author, educator and researcher in the object-oriented programming community, provides a deep understanding of object-oriented programming and Java.Understanding Object-Oriented Programming with Java teaches readers why the Java language works the way it does, as opposed to many other books that focus on how Java works.Readers learn about the development decisions that went into making the Java language, and leave with a more sophisticated knowledge of Java and how it fits in the context of object-oriented programming. Throughout the text, the focus remains on teaching readers to master the necessary object-oriented programming concepts. Dr. Budd explains to the reader in clear and simple terms the fundamental principles of object-oriented programming, illustrating these principles with extensive examples from the Java standard library. In short, he thoughtfully created this book, not as a reference manual for the Java language, but as a tool for understanding Java and the object-oriented programming philosophy.Highlights:* Provides several graduated example programs in Part II (i.e., cannon and pinball games) for readers to work through and successively learn object-oriented programming features.* Includes extensive examples from the Java standard library so that readers can better understand the many design patterns found in the AWT, the multiple purposes for which inheritance is used in the standard classes, and more. * Discusses features of Java in Part V that are important for students to understand, but not necessarily notable for their object-oriented features. Instructors have the flexibility to omit altogether, or introduce in parallel with earlier material. 0201308819B04062001
