C++ Programming: Program Design Including Data Structures, Third Edition ReviewBy about page 689 I had read the word "suppose" once too often. Mr. Malik's coherence fell apart when he got to the object-oriented stuff, and he started to use examples to *start* explanations. His meandering paragraphs begun with the word "suppose" are generally not helpful. Don't let chapter 12 (Inheritance and composition) discourage you, though. It's the worst of them and it gets better after that.
If you like to highlight your textbooks you will be frustrated by this book. You will spend a lot of time pondering if you really want to highlight an entire 12-line paragraph when what is explained could be stated in a single sentence. So, here's a hint: Read each section between the purple headings through before highlighting anything. Sometimes you'll find your concise sentence further on. If you don't, make use of the white space to write one yourself. This will aid in memory, and save your highlighter.
This should have been a shorter book, and the object-oriented stuff should have received some editing for clearer, more concise language.
The example code is redundant and the explanations unnecessarily long. Each problem is exhaustively set up and explained, with code segments that are duplicated in the finalized code. You'll find yourself skipping the setup of the problem and going right to the finalized code to see if you understand it, and invariably you will, because it is not complex. The examples are uninteresting and demonstrate things that are simple.
One really nice feature of this book? You don't have to get 300 pages into it before it will lie flat on your desk. It stays open nicely and has bright, white pages.
A summary of the contents:
One chapter on computers, programming languages, the process of writing a program, and a description of and background on C++.
Almost six hundred pages on non-object-oriented C++ language stuff. It does not assume you already know programming. Tiringly verbose, but seems comprehensive and well-organized.
About 350 pages on the object-oriented features of C++. It's not difficult material but it's not explained coherently. If this is the stuff you are most interested in you will be disappointed.
About 300 pages on applying C++ to algorithms, such as searching and sorting, liked lists and binary trees. Classic first-year CS course material. Perhaps the best-presented part of the book.
A chapter on the Standard Template Library.C++ Programming: Program Design Including Data Structures, Third Edition OverviewIntended for a two-semester course covering CS1 and CS2 topics, this text contains numerous clear and complete explanations and examples. With a strong focus on problem-solving, the book offers comprehensive coverage of introductory C++ programming topics and then moves the students confidently into more advanced concepts. Each chapter contains classroom-tested pedagogical features, including full-color code and comments, syntax boxes with explanation and examples, and complete programming exercises. All programs and exercises have been quality assurance tested with Microsoft Visual C++ .NET, available as an optional compiler with the text.

Systems Analysis and Design (6th Edition) ReviewThe Kendalls have definitely created a comprehensive book on systems analysis. Virtually every aspect is covered here, and in plenty of detail. There are plenty of review questions and problems, hypothetical consulting situations, an ongoing case-study, and even an associated web-based case study.
While being well written, I feel that this text may be a bit overdone. Most sections are longer than neccessary, over-explaining fairly obvious concepts. So although the reader can never complain about being short-changed, I would be amazed if any reader needed ALL of the explanations to understand what was being discussed.
I have also noticed a few cases of dated information creeping through from previous editions. One example is a discussion on groupware that talks about features of Windows for Workgroups and Windows NT, and mentions the 'upcoming' Chicago release. Chicago was the working name for Windows 95, which was hardly 'upcoming' for a text published in 1999.
It feels as if the Kendalls have been adding new information to their revised editions, but not revising thoroughly enough to remove old or out of date references. If a really good job of revision was done here, I think this text could be reduced by at least a hundred pages or so without any real loss of useful content.
Since it emphasises practice more than theory, it may not appeal to all types, but for anyone who needs to know HOW to be a systems analyst, this is probably the book to read.Systems Analysis and Design (6th Edition) Overview Dynamic, comprehensive coverage makes this the perfect book on systems analysis and design, with a reader-friendly presentation of development, methods, tools, and techniques. A variety of review questions and problems, an ongoing case study, and an Internet-based case study offer learners an understandable and motivating look at the SAD field. For production supervisors and other business personnel in similar positions who want a working knowledge—without the in-depth command—of information systems.

I used Dr. Bidgoli's MIS book in my Information Systems course and I absolutely loved it! The book is well written and easy to understand. The book's format is very effective for any student to learn the material with each chapter only including key information and ranging from 17 to 20 pages. The book is informative, current, and thorough but doesn't include irrelevant information, like so many other college textbooks. It also includes an online companion website that can be used from any device to access quizzes, videos, best problems, PowerPoint slides and other helpful information to assist students in learning the material.
The book includes many real life examples and cases that prepare students to use information systems in real world situation.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about MIS.

Worried about MIDP 2.0? Dont be, you need to learn everything thats in this book in the first place before you even worry about 2.0, true this book is not a 2.0 reference, but if your a java developer then you know how easy it is to transition into a new API implentation once you know the prior. After your done with this you can look at MIDP 2.0 and use what you want to from the new release to take your game one more step forward.

Half the book then takes you through the MIPS assembly language, with topics that you can code and run on SPIM. Very, very nice. Specifically, if you need to learn MIPS, you can do it here, at minimal cost. More broadly, the MIPS implements many if not all of the key ideas of a RISC approach. So programming MIPS can give you a thorough hands-on understanding of RISC.
But what about the rest of the book? It talks in general terms about the various major RISC families in the marketplace. It describes features common to all of these. The comparative analysis is useful. a solid introduction for using Python in scientific applications. The
main application areas covered are calculating the value of functions,
both built in and user supplied, plotting data, finding the roots of
equations, difference equations, numerical differentiation, numerical
integration and the solution to differential equations by numerical
methods.
Along the way you will learn how to use lists, tuples, dictionaries,
loops, list comprehension, lambda functions, Numpy arrays, file I/O
and Python Classes for programming scientific applications. Two
main highlights of the book are the thorough explanations the author
provides on how to use most of the features of Python and the copious
number of examples with answers. Other features are an example on how
to extract data from a Web Page and scitools. Scitools provides a
Matlab type of interface to gnuplot. About the only thing missing is

Developing Android Applications with Flex 4.5 ReviewI am the curious minded and for me, looking to play with the Android SDK has been on my to-do-list for a while. I did review an Android book by O'Reilly a few weeks back, but it was through the use of Java and the Android SDK officially. As a Flex developer by background, I have been eagerly awaiting this book,Developing Android Applications with Flex 4.5 by Rich Tretola, as it gives me the chance to experiment with Flash Builder 4.5 and creating Android applications with the more familiar Flex.
This book is quite concise, in fact lets you get rolling right away, which is great, considering the amount of concise and centralised information for Flex Mobile 4.5 is hard to come by, they are mostly scattered, and yeah we are still in the infancy of building Flex mobile apps. Nevertheless, this book gives you great gusto starting with the first chapter which gets you starter, then progresses to how to lay out the application, working with various UI controls, then getting hooked into the physical attributes of the phone, such as GPS, Accelerometer and Camera Roll, and concluding with how to publish the app finally.
I enjoyed this book, it's a concise reference and I hope there will be more development in the Flex sphere, to allow this to be a genuine stream of Android development. I actually hope there is an iOS version of this book, using Flex, which would be a great complement. But otherwise, this book get's my tick of approval, really great, enjoyable to read and for the busy man that I am, finished it in a day! Wohah.Developing Android Applications with Flex 4.5 Overview

C# and the .NET Platform ReviewI was informed by my manager to purchase a C# book, and I set out to do some research as to which book would fit my needs. I stumbled on this title as one recommended instead of another that was reviewed here on Amazon.com Based on the reviews posted for this book, I decided to purchase it. The positive reviews for this book are well-founded.
One of the very first things I noticed about this book is that it has a sticker on it that says that online updates for the final version of .NET are available. I went to the site and downloaded the list of changes to the book. The list was actually fairly short and the changes straightforward. I regard this as a good sign.
The book is well laid out and clear, the first 130+ pages dedicated to fundamental concepts and structures of C#. A 70-page introduction to OOP, in the context of C#, follows. The next few chapters deal with advanced topics including container classes and threads. Next the reader is launched into more graphically-oriented topics. Finally, the topics move into such as object serialization, database access, and web-centric subjects. The progression from subject to subject is logical and smooth, and each section is written clearly so as not to leave the reader in the dark and each presented after its prerequisites.
Example code in this book is clear, concise, and explained. The source to the examples is *not* included with the book, but is available readily for download.
This book is a great start into C# and .NET. It is *not* comprehensive, but it covers most of the important topics that get used regularly. Seriously consider this title when investigating C# and/or .NET.C# and the .NET Platform Overview

Besta CD737 2 Way Chinese-English Sentence Translator Electronic Dictionary ReviewHad almost identical device for a year now and found the pinyin input feature useful, but you cannot input the tone for any pinyin - you have to instead choose from a list of characters. Very difficult for a beginner.
This machine will show you how to draw characters with a nice clear animation which also allows you to try with a scribe pen and touch screen. It is good for getting the stroke order correct and clear enough to copy from for written practice on paper.
It allows for english inputs and for character inputs using the scribe pen included. Accurate.
It gives pronounciation guides in audio for most characters, but I don't know how good they are myself. I am told by a Chinese friend that they are fine. She listened to a few.

Penpower Portable Color Business Card Scanner (WorldCard Ultra Plus) ReviewI am a picky tech buyer.
I researched card readers for a while and wasn't too excited about any of the ones under $200. I found this WorldCard Ultra Plus and since it was new, won a few design awards, and no reviews, I decided to try it. (MSRP $179.95 but I got it for $119 from Amazon.com and $50 rebate, which made it an offer I couldn't refuse).
I was IMPRESSED! Its easily worth $200+!
The design in simple, compact, and functional. It includes a carrying case, usb extension, card cover, and calibration card. Nice flip up design to keep dust out of scanner.
I scanned 400 business cards (I was currently using a Business Card folder) with no problems and little recognition errors. Most of the errors were due to destroyed cards or exaggerated logos with business name in them or shiny/dark cards.
Worldcard software is easy to navigate. Exporting to Lotus Notes was a breeze and transferred without a problem. Exporting to Excel and Text file flawless as well.
If you are looking for an efficient, affordable, high quality card reader....buy this.
