Professional Android 2 Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewAndroid 2 is pretty new (as of March 2010) so having an Android 2 book on the market that is good quality was unexpected. I have not read all chapters, but here are my impressions so far:
Pro's
=====
- Author's style is neither dull or exciting, just to the point. Most explanations are clear and thorough.
- I definitely feel I have a good resource to complement the online Android docs. There have been a variety of topics I've tried to answer using Android docs (and Google searches) without much luck that this book covered clearly.
- There are a lot of good topics covered. Space is not wasted on reprinting information readily available online. Instead, author regularly refers reader to web links.
- And, finally, I appreciate the well-edited index.
Con's
=====
- The book is very weak in the illustration department. For example, instead of showing an image of a NinePatch bitmap, the author explains how a NinePatch should be constructed. This is chintzy and unforgivable for a book about a heavily visual technology.
- Occassionally, concepts are introduced without providing context. 'Kinda like when you walk into a meeting and the speakers clearly know their material but forget that 90% of the others in the room need to be brought up to speed before instructing.
- Some conspicuous omissions. For instance, no information on fonts.

A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python (Texts in Computational Science and Engineering) ReviewDon't be fooled by the title or the first chapter, this book provides
a solid introduction for using Python in scientific applications. The
main application areas covered are calculating the value of functions,
both built in and user supplied, plotting data, finding the roots of
equations, difference equations, numerical differentiation, numerical
integration and the solution to differential equations by numerical
methods.
Along the way you will learn how to use lists, tuples, dictionaries,
loops, list comprehension, lambda functions, Numpy arrays, file I/O
and Python Classes for programming scientific applications. Two
main highlights of the book are the thorough explanations the author
provides on how to use most of the features of Python and the copious
number of examples with answers. Other features are an example on how
to extract data from a Web Page and scitools. Scitools provides a
Matlab type of interface to gnuplot. About the only thing missing is
a summary on how to install Numpy, Scipy, Scitools, gunplot, and
gnuplot.py.A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python (Texts in Computational Science and Engineering) Overview
The book serves as a first introduction to computer programming of scientific applications, using the high-level Python language. The exposition is example- and problem-oriented, where the applications are taken from mathematics, numerical calculus, statistics, physics, biology, and finance. The book teaches "Matlab-style" and procedural programming as well as object-oriented programming. High school mathematics is a required background, and it is advantageous to study classical and numerical one-variable calculus in parallel with reading this book. Besides learning how to program computers, the reader will also learn how to solve mathematical problems, arising in various branches of science and engineering, with the aid of numerical methods and programming. By blending programming, mathematics and scientific applications, the book lays a solid foundation for practicing computational science.

App Inventor: Create Your Own Android Apps ReviewApp Inventor: Create Your Own Android Apps describes and shows people how to use a new web application platform which has the goal of allowing non-programmers to be able to make Android apps. This book is for people who have never programmed before who wish to develop Android apps. "App Inventor" should not be confused with the Android SDK, which is geared towards professional programmers who already know Java, nor with the Android NDK that uses C++.
Computers have made a lot of progress in the last three decades. We have moved from machines that can only work with 80 column text using a fixed-width font to machines with sophisticated graphical user interfaces. This transition has been done piecemeal, starting with the transition from the Apple II to the Macintosh, followed by the transition from DOS to Windows for business computers, which was then followed by the transition of the Internet from Usenet and other text-only applications to graphical web browsers.
The only technology that hasn't made this transition is the interface used by programmers. Programs are still made using the paradigm of an 80-column terminal with a fixed-width font.
App Inventor breaks this programming model. Programs are developed with a mouse; the program structure is described using graphical components resembling pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The App Inventor book walks you through the process of using this platform, starting with a simple "Hello, world" application and finishing with advanced topics such as using Android's web API.
One issue I had with the system is that App Inventor needs a fast computer with a large screen to function well. While I was able to build basic applications on my test system (an Atom N455 Netbook with a small 1024x600 screen), the emulated system I was developing on ran very slowly and developing applications required a lot of switching the window between the web page with the application and the Java-generated page for programming the application's logic.
I might have had better luck running the system using my 64-bit Linux system which runs the Android SDK noticeably faster, but unfortunately I was unable to synchronize App Inventor with its included Android emulator in Linux.
App Inventor shows a lot of promise, and the O'Reilly book does a good job of describing how to use this development toolkit. Unfortunately, the technology is a little too cutting-edge to use with the low-end computers many people have today. Only get this book if you have tried out App Inventor and it runs well on your system.

Building Android Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript ReviewI had bought an iPad when they were first announced. I had the expressed intention of creating some very specific apps; I did not need Wired Magazine to tell me that mobile apps are the future.
My plans were delayed by Apple's delay in releasing a new iPad OS. I didn't want to waste a lot of time struggling with things in the original OS that might become easier in the next.
I'd rather not struggle at all. As I have gotten older, the thrill of twisting C and C++ to my will is far less alluring than it used to be. Honestly, there is no allure left at all: I saw learning the Apple API as an onerous but necessary task. I was not looking forward to it.
Then this book arrived and opened my eyes. Yes, there is that "Android" in the title, but this is really about building device agnostic apps and I saw that long before the author off handedly mentioned iPhones in Chapter 7. Yeah, baby - if you think I was reluctant to learn Apple API's, well, that's nothing compared to how I feel about futzing around with Java to drive Android stuff. No thank you. But CSS and Javascript? That's different.
Not that I still don't have a learning curve. I have done very little with CSS or Javascript because of browser quirks. I realized that Jquery could smooth a lot of that out for me, but I just did not have enough of a need to invest any time learning that either. Mobile apps provides that incentive.
This book opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities I was just not aware of. For example, I did not know about the Web SQL Database abilities in HTML5. The author said that rocked his world; well, it rocked mine also.
I am looking forward to sitting down and playing with the ideas this book has exposed me to. This really changes my plans, and this is one case where I am very happy to veer off course. Jquery, here I come!Building Android Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript Overview

Developing Android Applications with Flex 4.5 ReviewI am the curious minded and for me, looking to play with the Android SDK has been on my to-do-list for a while. I did review an Android book by O'Reilly a few weeks back, but it was through the use of Java and the Android SDK officially. As a Flex developer by background, I have been eagerly awaiting this book,Developing Android Applications with Flex 4.5 by Rich Tretola, as it gives me the chance to experiment with Flash Builder 4.5 and creating Android applications with the more familiar Flex.
This book is quite concise, in fact lets you get rolling right away, which is great, considering the amount of concise and centralised information for Flex Mobile 4.5 is hard to come by, they are mostly scattered, and yeah we are still in the infancy of building Flex mobile apps. Nevertheless, this book gives you great gusto starting with the first chapter which gets you starter, then progresses to how to lay out the application, working with various UI controls, then getting hooked into the physical attributes of the phone, such as GPS, Accelerometer and Camera Roll, and concluding with how to publish the app finally.
I enjoyed this book, it's a concise reference and I hope there will be more development in the Flex sphere, to allow this to be a genuine stream of Android development. I actually hope there is an iOS version of this book, using Flex, which would be a great complement. But otherwise, this book get's my tick of approval, really great, enjoyable to read and for the busy man that I am, finished it in a day! Wohah.Developing Android Applications with Flex 4.5 Overview
Ready to put your ActionScript 3 skills to work on mobile apps? This hands-on book walks you through the process of creating an Adobe AIR application from start to finish, using the Flex 4.5 framework. Move quickly from a basic Hello World application to complex interactions with Android APIs, and get complete code examples for working with Android device components—GPS, camera, gallery, accelerometer, multitouch display, and OS interactions. No matter how much Flex experience you have, this book is the ideal resource.

Use Flash Builder 4.5 to create and debug a Flex Mobile project
Choose a layout option to determine which files Flash Builder auto-generates
Select permissions that control which devices can install your app from the Android Market

Android Application Development For Dummies ReviewI'm going to preface this review by saying that I have been programming for about 15 years, and have been working professionally as a developer for almost 3 years. My background is in VB, C#, Javascript, HTML, and even a little dabbling in C/C++. With that in mind, my Java knowledge was essentially everything I had learned from C# (which is very similar), and the tutorials on Google's Android development website. You could argue Javascript may help, but they're so different that I don't think it counts as experience.
I finished all of the tutorials on Google's site and still felt like I wasn't really grasping the concept of Android development. For those of you who have developed in C#/VB for Windows or Windows Mobile, you may understand what I mean when I say that going from something so straight-forward as using Visual Studio and .NET languages to something a little more complex and code-heavy like C++ or Java while using an unfamiliar IDE like Eclipse can be a little daunting at first. Google's tutorials, while full of great examples, don't really take the time to explain the "why" and then "what" of Android development, and instead have a more confusing approach of "Step 1: Type all this code in; Step 2: That code you just type does [this]; Step 3: Run your application".
The first half of this book is incredibly informative, and after reading only a couple short paragraphs on things I've already tried to learn and failed, I really understood it this time. The author's tone and descriptions make even the most complicated topics very easy to understand. The author also likes to commonly encourage the reader, writing that we are "experts", and making assumptions that we understand what we just read, even after it was some insanely complicated thing that was described in detail across four pages. It seems like this approach might be little odd, but I liked it. It kept my confidence up as I was reading.
The second half of the book, while also great, starts a little on the fast track. There are other reviews that mention this, and although I partially agree, it's also worth mentioning that a lot of the things that are flown through quickly come together a little later in the book. However, the pace does seem to go from a "one line at a time" methodology into a "type these 60 lines of code in and I'll explain it later" sort of teaching. While I don't prefer this, and I think it's a bit messy, the information IS there; it's just harder to soak it all in than it was in the first half of the book. The application you are building at the end is quite large, and I have tried to think of an easier way the author could have filled me with the knowledge instead of the approach taken, but I really couldn't think of a better way, mainly due to the way the code has to be written for the particular task at hand.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I think it was a great introduction to Android development, and is leaps and bounds above Google's documentation, at least for a beginner. I wish the book was a little longer, and I wish the author didn't frequently say things like "I could write an entire book on [subject], so I won't go into detail about this. If you want to learn more, read the documentation at [Google link]." For these reasons, I gave it four stars instead of five. The fundamentals do exist in this book, but I would have liked to have seen more.
I would recommend this book for anyone with any sort of programming background looking to get into Android development. I would probably not recommend it to someone who has no programming background whatsoever.

App Inventor for Android: Build Your Own Apps - No Experience Required ReviewFor many people wrestling an idea for an app into an actual wokring app is daunting. There are issues of setting up a development environment, learning the way the device you are making an app for wants you to code for it, deciphering the vectors and hooks into the device's layers and then crafting your idea thru all those processes into something you can see and touch on the screen of your device. With this book as my guide I was able to get through these processes in a near painless manner.
Each process was laid out before me in easy to understand steps and many of the stumbles I made were addressed before I was about to make them. What problems I did come across where not as problematic thanks to the way the author organized his book. The pacing of the examples were perfect, I felt like I was getting a solid payoff after working thru each chapter. With the completion of each chapter I also felt a little more confident that I would be able to take my ideas for apps and make them actual working apps. After the twitter chapter I was near giddy with accomplishment; I played the proud parent as I showed off the app to those folks I was able to pin down. The bonus online chapter was the perfect reward for finishing up the book. What was even better was finding all the video tutorials on the authors web site, truly an amazing set of learning that just keeps on getting better over time.
The only downside to going thru the book, bonus chapters and web site is I now have more, and more complex, app project ideas that I want to find time to work on. This book was truly empowering as well as educational.
The other unforeseen outcome of going thru the author's works is that my 8 year old son now wants to work on some apps with me. He watched as I worked thru examples with the block editor and was quickly able to tell me what was going on as far as logic and flow was concerned. There is a long road to go before he puts his stamp on a first app but he is well and truly hooked as far as deving for the the Android is concerned.
Much thanks and congrats on a fantastic work.App Inventor for Android: Build Your Own Apps - No Experience Required OverviewCreate Android mobile apps, no programming required!

Shows you how to create apps that take advantage of the Android smartphone?s handy features, such as GPS, messaging, contacts, and more

With App Inventor for Android and this complete guide, you'll soon be creating apps that incorporate all of the Android smartphone's fun features, such as the accelerometer, GPS, messaging, and more. From the Author: Getting Data In and Out of App Inventor Apps In today's mobile world, applications are expected to not only provide functionality locally but also have up to date content and external awareness."How do I get all this data into App Inventor?" is one of the most frequently asked questions by new developers.Initially getting rows and columns of data into App Inventor was a kind of linear equation. You used the TinyWebDB or you turned to some of the third party hacks that are available. The TinyWebDB component is still a possibility for volatile data that needs to be pulled from the internet and placed into App Inventor. It has the added benefit of being quick and allowing write to the web database. For getting rows and columns of data into App Inventor the algorithm would follow these steps: 1. Pull data from WebService and place in temporary variable. 2. Parse data into psuedo-array3. Write data to a local TinyDBThis is still an option for getting tabular data into App Inventor.It has the advantage of being fast and stable. It has the disadvantage of needing the TinyWebDB service installed and running on a web server. Setting up and installing the TinyWebDB service can be complex and frustrating.There is the added complexity of needing a separate application to actually pre-populate TinyWebDB with data. The App Inventor team recently released an update to App Inventor that includes functionality to allow access to the Google Fusion Tables. Google Fusion Tables is an online database solution that allows simple SQL like commands to be sent via HTTP to stored data. There is a nice back-end management solution that allows a user to pre-build and pre-populate data into created tables.All of the data lives in Google's "cloud" service. The back-end management system will be very familiar to users of Google Docs or other Google cloud products. The algorithm for getting tabular data into an App Inventor app using Fusion Tables will follow these steps: 1. Create the desired Fusion Table and populate the table with data using the Web backend. 2. The app will be "initialized" by pulling the data from a Fusion Table.3. The app will store the returned Lists in a local TinyDBThe advantage of Fusion Tables is the ability to easily pre-populate the online data by hand entering or importing a spreadsheet of values. This will allow the developer to maintain the data that all the deployed apps consume. Thereby, fresh content and data could be added to applications by changing the data in the Fusion Table. The disadvantage of Fusion Tables is the data retrieval method. When the data is pulled from the Fusion Table the application stops while displaying a notification that it is pulling data from a Fusion Table. Which appears a little bit hokey on a professional level application. It is also linear and fairly slow. In otherwords you will not likely be repeatedly and frequently pulling data from a Fusion table in the same App session. Instead, an application would likely pull data once when the application starts and then only when specifically refreshed. The options and power that are given to developers with the new Fusion Table has yet to be fully explored and I look forward to some exciting uses of Fusion Tables. (Hint: Someone should use this for a text based MMORPG ... the possibilities are endless. ) The newest version of App Inventor released by the incredible rock stars on the Google App Inventor developer team includes the long awaited Holy Grail. I am, of course, talking about the "WebComponent". Now the web component as it currently exists is a little bit limited and not easy to implement. However, it is REALLY powerful even in its current iteration. It has the power to send HTTP formatted requests to existing web services and web sites and then store and manipulate the returned data.It combines the speed of the TinyWebDB service requests and the flexibility of using existing data like with the Fusion Tables.The web component brings the ability to use HTTP POST and GET commands which are the foundation of most simple web services.The algorithm for using the WebComponent would (or at least could) follow these steps: 1. Establish (or use existing) web service that will respond to GET/POST. 2. Use the WebComponent to send a GET request to the service. 3. Use the Text parsing blocks to parse out the tabular data sent by the web service. The advantage of using GET/POST commands is the speed with which they can be used inline with programmatic functions in an application. Another advantage is the flexibility of using existing data and or maintaining external data in a database behind your webservice.The WebComponent opens up App Inventor to REAL web service and interactive internet services development. I am excited about the direction the App Inventor team is taking this awesome product and look forward to an even more mature Rapid Application Development framework.

SuperTooth Z004092E High Definition Bluetooth Portable Visor Car Kit and Speakerphone for Cell Phones/iPad 2/iPhone 3/3G/3Gs/4 - Bluetooth Speakerphone - Retail Packaging - Black ReviewSUMMARY:
=========
[I am using the Supertooth HD with a Samsung Focus running Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango)]
If you search my reviews, I bought and returned the Supertooth Buddy (the little brother version of this). So far, the Supertooth HD has not exhibited any of the annoyances of its little brother. Currently, this is a 5-star device and I will update my review as needed.
What makes the perfect car bluetooth speakerphone?
==============
1. It should have caller-id that speaks the name of the caller
2. It should automatically turn on/off as you are away from the car
3. It should have ample volume while driving at highway speeds
4. You should only have to press a single and easily accessible button to answer or place a call
5. It should make use of your phone's built-in voice recognition system (if your phone has this)
6. It should be easy to pair and auto-download your phone's contacts
7. It should reconnect easily when you are in the car
8. Callers should be able to hear you clearly at highway speeds
9. The charging port should not be obstructed when the device is installed on a sunvisor
10. It should have a long battery life
11. It should be reliable whether it is -40 degrees in Fargo or the internal car temperature reaches 140 degrees in Texas
12. It should have good documentation or manufacturer's website and support
13. It should be usable whether the sun visor is flipped down or up
14. It should be reasonably priced
How does the Supertooth HD stack up?
=====================================
A. As of 10/2011, I believe the Supertooth HD meets the bar on all of the items above except #11 is currently unknown as the weather has been mild and #12 - the company website leaves a lot to be desired (poor resolution graphics, non-working hyperlinks, the support phone # is a long distance call to France, and the download for the "Full User Guide" says "Coming soon....")
B. I've owned the Motorola T505 and it does not have spoken-name caller id, doesn't turn off or on automatically, the volume is not loud enough at highway speeds (or heck, even idling), and it is difficult to press the small answer or call button. I got it a couple years ago and I believe I threw it in the trash.
C. The Supertooth BUDDY that I returned does not have ANY form of caller id (it just rings), the bluetooth would never turn off when I was in the house, and it wouldn't always reconnect reliably. I also had one strange charging issue before I returned it.
D. I've owned TWO of the Motorola T325 which was almost the perfect device, but horrible reliability. Two broke and they were returned to Amazon. I suppose they simply couldn't handle the Texas heat. They would connect/disconnect constantly and or wouldn't hang up or wouldn't place a call or wouldn't turn on.
E. The Jabra Freeway is almost twice the price of this (I've never used one), but the reviews so far aren't all 5-stars, so I decided to take one for the team and try the Supertooth HD.
F. I purposely purchased the Jabra Cruiser2 (similarly priced to this) for my wife, so we could decide which one we liked better in 30 days. So far the Supertooth HD is ahead because the Cruiser2 doesn't seem to automatically turn on (you have to remember to press the 'phone' button to make it reconnect, though it does connect very quickly) and caller-id wouldn't work for my name, even though it worked for other spoken names. It would only read my phone number, not speak my name, even though her caller id display clearly showed my name. We re-downloaded the phone book and the Cruiser2 still does not like me. So the Cruiser2 is losing in #1 and #2 in the list above and fails in #13. The Supertooth Buddy and HD are the only genius devices that use magnets that allow you to quickly move the device to the front or back of the sunvisor for when it is flipped down or up.
Usage Notes:
=============
Since the company website has "Available soon..." for the full user guide, here's what I've figured out on my own:
Saying "Voice-dial" is the same thing as hitting the voice-recognition button on your phone. You say voice-dial and then it loads your phone's personal voice-recognition system and everything works normally from there. With Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, I can listen to as well as dictate text messages from the bluetooth speakerphone - it's pretty fantastic!
Beyond that you have to specially add an extra phone entry to your important contacts, so that even if your phone does not have voice-recognition dialing, the Supertooth HD will pick up on the special entries and still allow you to use the HD's voice-dial, pretty slick. So what I'm saying is that you can call contact 1 or call voicemail from the Supertooth HD's own voice system or you can say voice-dial, let your phone's native voice system take over and THEN say, Call Mary or Call Voicemail. Both work great.
Now even if you don't have Windows Phone 7.5 Mango or a fancy smartphone, you receive 6 months free of Dial2Do which is basically a special phone number that you call that allows you to send text messages, emails, Facebook status', tweets by voice. You have to previously register the numbers or addresses on their website, etc).
IN CLOSING:
============
The Supertooth HD almost meets the bar on becoming the perfect car bluetooth speakerphone and for the price and 6-month trial of Dial2Do, it is definitely a great buy.
I will update this review as the days pass if I encounter any reliability issues or any other annoyances.SuperTooth Z004092E High Definition Bluetooth Portable Visor Car Kit and Speakerphone for Cell Phones/iPad 2/iPhone 3/3G/3Gs/4 - Bluetooth Speakerphone - Retail Packaging - Black Overview

Superpad 10.2" Tablet PC, Google Android 2.1, Webcam, GPS, HDMI, USB, WIFI, 2 micro SD card slots Review1/29/2011
Arrived today in great condition. I bought this as an alternative to a super expensive iPad to use at college instead of lugging my heavy laptop every day. The initial charge to 100% takes quite some time, I've been charging it for about 4 hours now and it's only at 60%, but I've also been using it during that time, so that probably isn't helping much. It runs just like an android phone, only on a much larger screen.
First off, you have to set the date and time, and if you use the weather widget, change it from Beijing, however, I can't figure out how to change it from Celsius to Fahrenheit. Maybe redownloading the widget will help. It is in English, so you don't have to worry about figuring out how to change the language from Chinese, which is nice. Unlike the reviews I've seen on similar apads, the android market is pre-installed, so as soon as you are hooked to your wi-fi you can start plunking apps down. I highly suggest ordering two 16GB mini-SD cards to go with it, the android OS takes up a little over half of the 2GB internal HD. After you set the time and the weather widget, calibrate the screen from the settings menu. I didn't do that and was having issues using the on screen keyboard until I did so. Now it responds just fine to my touch.
I've seen on reviews for similar products that you need to use a stylus or a fingernail to manipulate the screen, but that's not so with this one. Your fingerpad works just fine. It's not a multi-touch screen, but hey, it's only $200, so you can't have everything, but the screen size is big enough that you really don't need it, plus it does have a zoom option.
Don't purchase an iPad case and try to use it for this. It won't work. iPad's have a 9.7" screen where this one has a 10.2". You'd be better off buying a case for a netbook. Later on I'm going to hook up a USB mouse and keyboard and see how the system responds. I'll update my review after I've played with it some more, but so far, I really like it.Superpad 10.2" Tablet PC, Google Android 2.1, Webcam, GPS, HDMI, USB, WIFI, 2 micro SD card slots Overview

7 Touch Tablet Internet Media Player 2Gb Google Android Os - ROCKCHIP CPU ReviewI ordered this product to see what android was like before I invested in a phone with the android OS. I was pleased when the product arrived in a timely manner and in good condition. I've heard that people were having issues connecting to the android market but I didn't have any problems at all. I downloaded a few apps already. I was able to connect to my home network and surf the web in less than 2 minutes. Android takes a bit of getting used to if you are like me and more familiar with an iphone. The only complaints I have are the RAM is a bit on the low side. A way to help that problem is downloading an app killer from the market to quit the apps that are running in the background. The more apps that are running in the background the slower the device becomes. Also, the touch screen isn't quite as good as I'd like but the device is all in all pretty good.7 Touch Tablet Internet Media Player 2Gb Google Android Os - ROCKCHIP CPU Overview

Lingo EuroTalk Translator ReviewI bought this on another site before I saw it on Amazon. Paid $10 more for it. I bought it because I am going to Athens in March 2011, and it has the Greek language as well as French Italian Spanish and German. I'm a 67 year old retired male, and this is my first time to travel abroad. I have traveled all over the U.S. for the past 10 years, and decided this year I'll try another country. I am going to stay in Athens for 6 days and rent a car to see Sparta, Delphi, and Mt. Olympus. I have a GPS that speaks English, but by traveling in some remote areas of Greece, I'm sure I will need a translator. I have researched many kinds before I decided on this one. I've had it for a couple weeks now, and it seems like it will work for me. It has a storage for instant recall of favorites, so I am entering phrases I think will be helpful, and will play them back, like before I enter a restaurant, and have them fresh in my mind. It not only speaks, but shows typewritten in the chosen language, as well as English. It helps when hearing the spoken version to see it written in my language. Sometimes what may sound like a "g" could be a "t". It will only accept and repeat back single words, that you can choose. Would be nice if you could type in a whole phrase of your choice. It does have many, many, pre-selected phrases arranged in categories though, and I do have a couple months to choose and select, then place them in favorites. If anyone could advise on the best way to understand their reply please let me know. I am going to try to guess at their response then type it in English and listen to playback in their language. Will have to familiarize myself with single, common words. That's where it would be nice to be able to type in a phrase and translate it. Sometimes words that are said in phrases are pronounced entirely different. Anyhow....this seems to be a very good translator for the price. It came with a quick start, and an in depth manual, an earbud, and a Greek alphabet punchout that can be placed and removed over the English keyboard. As far as the vocal playback. It's pretty good. Any foreign language will sound strange when you hear it, that's why the typewritten part is nice. You can read along in English as they speak in their language. makes it easier to understand.
Again, I think it's a pretty good little product for a soon to be world traveler. Who knows, next year it might be Rome.
Hope this take on it helps.Lingo EuroTalk Translator Overview
