Systems Analysis and Design (6th Edition) ReviewThe Kendalls have definitely created a comprehensive book on systems analysis. Virtually every aspect is covered here, and in plenty of detail. There are plenty of review questions and problems, hypothetical consulting situations, an ongoing case-study, and even an associated web-based case study.
While being well written, I feel that this text may be a bit overdone. Most sections are longer than neccessary, over-explaining fairly obvious concepts. So although the reader can never complain about being short-changed, I would be amazed if any reader needed ALL of the explanations to understand what was being discussed.
I have also noticed a few cases of dated information creeping through from previous editions. One example is a discussion on groupware that talks about features of Windows for Workgroups and Windows NT, and mentions the 'upcoming' Chicago release. Chicago was the working name for Windows 95, which was hardly 'upcoming' for a text published in 1999.
It feels as if the Kendalls have been adding new information to their revised editions, but not revising thoroughly enough to remove old or out of date references. If a really good job of revision was done here, I think this text could be reduced by at least a hundred pages or so without any real loss of useful content.
Since it emphasises practice more than theory, it may not appeal to all types, but for anyone who needs to know HOW to be a systems analyst, this is probably the book to read.Systems Analysis and Design (6th Edition) Overview Dynamic, comprehensive coverage makes this the perfect book on systems analysis and design, with a reader-friendly presentation of development, methods, tools, and techniques. A variety of review questions and problems, an ongoing case study, and an Internet-based case study offer learners an understandable and motivating look at the SAD field. For production supervisors and other business personnel in similar positions who want a working knowledge—without the in-depth command—of information systems.

MIS 2010 (with Review Cards and Printed Access Card) ReviewFor students, the topic of information systems or the study of technology and the advancement thereof can be a very daunting task. Although at least a basic understanding of information systems is necessary in order to function in this high tech world, most people do not have a clue about the fundamentals of anything computer. They usually know that this button turns it on as well as the path to their favorite website for watching hilarious videos but the depth of their knowledge usually hits its limits at this point. This is a very sad, but all too often, reality of modern life. The issue at hand is the sheer complexity of information systems as well as the fact that innovation happens nearly everyday. The point of knowing everything, or most everything, necessary to have a firm footing on the subject matter is always moving and becoming further away. This is where this book shines through as a must have.
The fundamental value of this book is that it is concise. It is rather to the point and does not journey on through meaningless examples or unnecessary stories. Here is Topic X. This is what Topic X is or does. Here is a bullet list of uses for Topic X or a picture/diagram showing Topic X in action. There may be a brief history or little bit of extra information but then the book simply moves onto the next topic. It does not get long and drawn out about any one topic or subject. This keeps the information fresh and the reader learning about all kinds of new things. Although this is a wonderful method to assist the student in learning about this complex subject, the student should be cautious on tests. Given that the book does not dig too deep into the subject matter, a student may have a tendency to simply breeze through the reading and not allow everything to "sink in." A test question may demand that the student pay attention to a small detail in the text that he was not prepared for given the nature of the reading. This really depends on the student though and this would be the only negative attribute of the book, per se. Generally, the concise nature of the book is what makes it a must have for any student wishing to step into the world of information systems or technology and start learning.
The chapters average about 19 pages and when one gets deeper in the book, the chapters actually seem shorter. It is pleasant to be able to read through the chapter without it becoming too long that it causes one to lose focus or numb the mind because it is dull. The colors and pictures are vibrant, giving it a modern design and feel. The book showcases brief highlights of technology companies as well as how they use certain technologies or some products and services these companies offer to help the student get a feel for the information being learned in action. The coverage of all subjects in the book is just enough to get a feel for the topic but not enough to necessarily have a complete understanding of all a topic's uses or inter workings. The book reveals enough knowledge that the reader will have a basic understanding of the subject matter and this is all that is necessarily for an introductory class. If the reader wishes to learn more or develop a greater understanding of a certain topic, the information superhighway is always at his finger tips.
The book comes with excellent study guides in the back. Each page-sized note card provides a summary of each learning objective and has all the key terms for the chapter as well as the full definitions. There is an excellent online resource for students that comes with one semester of access for students who buy the new version, or a lucky student that buys a used version from a student who did not use it. It provides plenty of support to assist in the journey of mastering the basics of management information systems.
The book is very well priced. It is the cheapest, brand new book that I have purchased in a long time. I am ecstatic to purchase a used book at the price I can get this one for brand new. Other MIS books of lower quality go for at least two times more in price and up. The book is geared for the student with the student in mind at all times and utilized plenty of student feedback in its creation. This book is a great value and a must have for any student or MIS class.MIS 2010 (with Review Cards and Printed Access Card) OverviewCreated through a "student-tested, faculty-approved" review process with over 125 students and faculty, MIS is an engaging and accessible solution to accommodate the diverse lifestyles of today's learners. MIS incorporates state-of-the-art coverage through numerous practical applications and offers emerging cases from the information systems field.

Starter Kit for the IBM iSeries and AS/400 ReviewI've worked with Midrange systems for over 25 years and I can tell you this is not a good book, it's a great book. If you're an iSeries or AS/400 administrator, you need this book. If you're a programmer on the iSeries, you need this book. If you're studying to prepare for IBM Certification as an AS/400 System Administrator, you need this book.
The Starter Kit covers everything you're likely to need including messaging, CL, Backup and Recovery strategy, general system administration, security, work management, database concepts and much more.
The code samples alone are worth many times the price of the book and the authors not only understand the system, they explain it with a sense of humor. This book is a bargain.
Jeff GunterStarter Kit for the IBM iSeries and AS/400 OverviewWithout a doubt, the strong suit of IBM's iSeries and AS/400 systems is their sophisticated operating system, OS/400. The Essentials of Computer Organization And Architecture ReviewAs a teacher, I wasn't too thrilled about yet another computer organization and architecture book. However, this one is different. It is written from a computer science point of view and it aimed at a one semester sequence course. After attending SIGCSE, I was aware of the new Computing Curriculum 2001. This book appears to follow that curriculum, even in the amount of hours recommended per topic.
If you are looking for a computer engineering book, this one probably won't be top on your list. However, the selection of topics for both computer science (and information systems) is perfect. If you are looking for an org/arch reference book, this would be a good candidate.
Strong points: Concise, clear writing style (easy for students to understand); lots of examples; many exercises, at varying levels of difficulty; good breadth for a one course sequence; logical organization; simple "learning" architecture (with simulation software); up-to-date errata (on book web page).
Potential weak points: If you teach more than 2-3 weeks of assembly language programming, you'll have to supplement with a different book; all software is in Java (I don't consider this a weakness, but some people may). The Essentials of Computer Organization And Architecture OverviewThoroughly Revised And Updated, The Essentials Of Computer Organization And Architecture, Second Edition Is A Comprehensive Resource That Addresses All Of The Necessary Organization And Architecture Topics Yet Is Concise Enough To Move Through In A Single Semester. The Text Covers Such Topics As Digital Logic, Data Representation, Machine-Level Language, General Organization, Assembly Language Programming, CPU Organization, Memory Organization, And Input/Output Devices, As Well As A New Chapter On Embedded Systems.Correlated To The ACM-IEEE Computing Curricula Guidelines, The Essentials Of Computer Organization And Architecture Is The Forefront Text For Your Computer Organization And Architecture Course.
