Head First C# ReviewHead First C# was my first experience with the Head First series, although I have since also purchased the excellent Head First Design Patterns (Head First).
This book is designed to teach you C# from the beginning. Technical books can generally be categorized as either tutorials or reference texts -- and this is absolutely in the tutorial category. It's intended to be read and worked through in order, from start to finish. If you already know C# and are looking for a reference text, look elsewhere. If you're an experienced C++ programmer looking to learn C# but are already very familiar with object oriented programming, consider checking out the excellent and concise Accelerated C# 2008 (Accelerated). If you're an experienced C# programmer and just want to learn the advanced features of C#2 and C#3, you'll again want to look elsewhere, and you couldn't do better than C# in Depth: What you need to master C# 2 and 3.
But if you want to *learn* C# and object-oriented programming, and especially if you have little or no prior programming experience, look no further than this fantastic book. If you're reading reviews of the book, then you probably know two things: it has an unusual style and some quirky humor, and it has a bit more than it's fair share of errors. These two things are true, but there's a lot more about the book that you should know, and that's mostly what I want to talk about in this review. Before I move on, though, let me say two things. First, the conversational style and the humor are sometimes overstated -- this is a book about programming, and it's not a joke a minute or anything. I know that you can't Search Inside here on Amazon to see what the book is like, which I assume is because of the visuals-heavy design and unusual layout of the text, but just do a quick search for the book's website and you can download a full sample chapter and some other excerpts. Judge for yourself before dismissing an excellent book based on its unusual (but effective!) design. Second, the errata *are* extensive, but they don't get in the way of your learning. This book shines for its well-chosen examples, its focus on your learning (you'll be talked to rather than at), and its great overall structure -- and none of the errata interfere with any of that at all. If the extensive errata lists do bother you, I wrote a small free program that can sort through them for you and filter out the types of errors or page ranges you're not interested in. (You can find the link stickied at the web forum for Head First C#.)
There are also some features of the book that I don't see mentioned often enough, and which I want to comment on briefly before getting to the heart of the review. First, I love that the introduction is actually useful, giving you valuable insights on why the authors made the design choices they did (why text is in the pictures, rather than beneath them as captions, for example), and offering advice on how best to approach the book if you want to maximize your learning experience. I highly recommend reading it. Second, it's worth mentioning the way that the book uses the (free) Visual Studio 2008 IDE to make graphical Windows applications throughout, rather than focusing on a text editor and console applications like many other introductory texts. Visual Studio is a powerful IDE, and it *helps* you learn with syntax highlighting and Intellisense -- I'm very glad that the Head First C# authors chose to incorporate its use into the book, because it often allowed me to focus on concepts at first rather than syntax, picking that up gradually through repeated use with the IDE's guidance. Third, you'll be making some genuinely impressive software over the course of the book -- between the use of Visual Studio and the authors' being unafraid to assign projects that take several pages just to *describe*, you'll get a much better feel for what it's like to make real software than you would from the small "toy" examples that are more common in many other introductory books. (But don't worry, there's plenty of guidance, including fully annotated solution code for most of them, and a helpful web forum if you get stuck.) Finally, the book has the advantage of going to print for the first time after C# 3.0 and .NET 3.5 were released, and it fluently combines the various iterations of the language, teaching C# *as it now exists* from the ground up in an order that makes sense for someone learning now from scratch, rather than taking the more common but less sensible route of introducing C#1.0 features before C#2 before C#3. This is great, because it allows the authors to introduce some of the powerful and convenient features of the newer editions of the language and framework -- the stuff that really makes C# appealing as a language -- quite early in the book.
The funny thing about Head First C# is that the conversational tone, the humor, the quirky layout, and the pictures make the book seem completely un-academic. At first glance, it's as far from an academic textbook as you could possibly get! But I've come to realize that reading through the book from the beginning, doing all the exercises, is as close to the structured learning experience of an academic course as you can get in book form. The brilliance of Head First C# isn't in the phrasing of any given sentence or the coding style in a particular snippet -- it's in the overall structure of the book and especially in the examples chosen for exercises, which allow you to build up your knowledge incrementally while still reviewing past material. (Which is why the errata really aren't a big deal.) I've seen some reviews point out the book's "redundancy" as a flaw, and I just shake my head. The book is often repetitious, but never redundant, and always deliberately -- seeing the same material repeatedly from different perspectives and at different times is absolutely key to learning anything, and the repetition is one of the best features of the Head First series in general and this book in particular.
So there are errors. So there's a bit of fuzziness in the phrasing sometimes. So it doesn't cover Advanced Language Topic A or B. So what? This book is a teaching tool. It's a full course -- instructor, fellow students, textbook, homework, projects, review sessions, and conversations with peers -- stuffed onto paper, rolled up, printed, and stuck between covers.
I've learned C#, and I've *retained* what I've learned. I've had fun doing it. And if you too want to learn C# and programming, I can't recommend Head First C# highly enough.Head First C# Overview
Head First C# is a complete learning experience for object-oriented programming, C#, and the Visual Studio IDE. Built for your brain, this book covers C# 3.0 and Visual Studio 2008, and teaches everything from language fundamentals to advanced topics including garbage collection, extension methods, and double-buffered animation. You'll also master C#'s hottest and newest syntax, LINQ, for querying SQL databases, .NET collections, and XML documents. By the time you're through, you'll be a proficient C# programmer, designing and coding large-scale applications. Every few chapters you will come across a lab that lets you apply what you've learned up to that point. Each lab is designed to simulate a professional programming task, increasing in complexity until-at last-you build a working Invaders game, complete with shooting ships, aliens descending while firing, and an animated death sequence for unlucky starfighters. This remarkably engaging book will have you going from zero to 60 with C# in no time flat.

Professional XNA Game Programming: For Xbox 360 and Windows ReviewI just want to warn the reader before buying this book. Certainly the author knows how to code games, but this book did not worked for ME for the following reasons:
*) You will need to be in front of a computer and have the samples downloaded if you want to learn something. I read 200 pages from this book while traveling by plane and since most of the code is not printed, and the author relies on the reader to try things on the computer, I did not learned much. If you are like me and love to read books in the beach, on the bed, or waiting on the dentist, you will not learn much.
*) Some of the games were written with the beta version and then ported, and some with the release version, but none with the refresh version. So the information may be already outdated. For example, the author states that XNA does not support fonts, and that was true, but no anymore.
*) The book can not be used as a reference book, it was written to be read from the beginning to the end.
*) The games presented on the book relies on helper classes written by the author, so sometimes you feel more like learning how to use this helper classes and less like learning XNA.
I feel bad writing this because the author has contributed so much for the XNA community, he deserves better, but this book is just not for everyone. If you feel like sitting in front of the computer and analyze code to learn by yourself, I suggest trying the samples from the XNA site first.

Beginning ASP.NET 4.0 in C# 2010 ReviewThis book has lots of good information, and it is in mostly the right order. The problem with this book for many readers will be the style of presentation. It has been proven many times that people learn by doing, but this book doesn't give you as much in that area as is necessary to learn. There is code that you can download but it doesn't really line up with the book.
The worst part of this book are the code snippets that are placed throughout the book. They don't show the surrounding code, so everything is out of context, and you don't feel 100% sure of where it goes in your file, and to top it off, it is code that sometimes doesn't relate to the code you download. Many times, instead of showing actual real-life variables, it just shows the equivalent of an 'x'. So you have no idea how it is supposed to come together. It continuously says 'code removed for clarity'. I understand the point of this as that code isn't the focus of this section, but if I'm building a page, I need to see that code to make sure I have the same code as the book.
I would have to say that the information given is very precise, and if you already know C#, you're probably going to enjoy this book, but if you are new to it, and need examples and practice, it's not the best. Imagine watching an Olympic freestyle skier for a few minutes, and then without ever having skied or practiced jumping, you are suddenly asked to do the same flips and twists perfectly. Maybe an exaggeration, but you are really left on your own a lot of the time.
The book is very dry, so you have a very long attention span and motivation to get through the book in order to do well with it. It is clear it is written by a programmer. There are constantly references to terms that haven't been defined previously, and sometimes you get the feeling this guy is trying to impress you with words. I've had professors like that, and although I respect their knowledge and intelligence, it does not contribute to a good learning atmosphere. I'm not saying 'dumb it down', but when learning a complex topic, the simpler it can be presented, the better.
Another problem is the low resolution of many of the screen shots. I know that's a limitation of the technology, but it can actually be somewhat dizzying to look at because of the blurriness.
There are other pros, and other cons, but I just touched on the main ones I noticed.Beginning ASP.NET 4.0 in C# 2010 OverviewBeginning ASP.NET 4.0 in C# 2010 follows in the footsteps of the highly successful .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.5 editions, teaching novice users how to use ASP.NET by gradually building their knowledge of the technology up in a pyramidal fashion chapter by chapter.Comprehensively revised for both ASP.NET 4.0 and the new Visual C# 2010 language this book presents the easiest path to ASP.NET 4.0 mastery.

Concurrent Programming on Windows ReviewI really wanted to like this book, but in the end I couldn't. It seems to me to be at least twice as long as it needs to be, extremely poorly and confusingly written, and a mish-mash of random odds and ends. I don't think the author has really worked out who his target audience is. Is it people who have a serious interest in the logic of concurrent programming - in which case you'd be better off reading the original papers by the likes of Dijkstra and Hoare, or the much much shorter book by Ben-Ari? Or is it aimed at people who want to write concurrent programs that work on Windows? In which case you'd be better off reading the much shorter book by Beveridge and Wiener.
Proof-reading and quality control is shoddy. For example, I have the distinct impression that at some point some-one has done a global replace of "task" with "thread" in the text, resulting in jibber-jabber such as "though it's highly unlikely that anybody reading this book will have to take on such a thread" on page 60, to cite one example out of several that I noticed.Concurrent Programming on Windows Overview"When you begin using multi-threading throughout an application, the importance of clean architecture and design is critical. . . . This places an emphasis on understanding not only the platform's capabilities but also emerging best practices. Joe does a great job interspersing best practices alongside theory throughout his book." – From the Foreword by Craig Mundie, Chief Research and Strategy Officer, Microsoft CorporationAuthor Joe Duffy has risen to the challenge of explaining how to write software that takes full advantage of concurrency and hardware parallelism. In Concurrent Programming on Windows, he explains how to design, implement, and maintain large-scale concurrent programs, primarily using C# and C++ for Windows.Duffy aims to give application, system, and library developers the tools and techniques needed to write efficient, safe code for multicore processors. This is important not only for the kinds of problems where concurrency is inherent and easily exploitable—such as server applications, compute-intensive image manipulation, financial analysis, simulations, and AI algorithms—but also for problems that can be speeded up using parallelism but require more effort—such as math libraries, sort routines, report generation, XML manipulation, and stream processing algorithms.Concurrent Programming on Windows has four major sections: The first introduces concurrency at a high level, followed by a section that focuses on the fundamental platform features, inner workings, and API details. Next, there is a section that describes common patterns, best practices, algorithms, and data structures that emerge while writing concurrent software. The final section covers many of the common system-wide architectural and process concerns of concurrent programming. This is the only book you'll need in order to learn the best practices and common patterns for programming with concurrency on Windows and .NET.

TCP/IP Sockets in C#: Practical Guide for Programmers (The Practical Guides) ReviewI loved this book!
I bought this book not knowing anything about sockets. All I knew was that I had to use them for my next project. I bought this book, and within 2 weeks time had developed a full-scale proof-of-concept, distributed, client-server type application communicating over TCP/IP and using UDP for multicasting.
The examples are concise and practical, including examples of data framing/parsing and how to deal with different wire formats (big/little endian).
This book is a must-have for any serious C# programmer.TCP/IP Sockets in C#: Practical Guide for Programmers (The Practical Guides) Overview

GDI+ Programming: Creating Custom Controls Using C# ReviewOne of my first .NET ah-hah experiences back in 2001 was creating an .aspx file that I could reference as a graphic (!). The .aspx file received two query parameters which informed it of the file name of the jpg and the width that the returned image was supposed to be. So then in an IMG tag, I would simply put src="ShowPicture.aspx?file=product1343.jpg&width=100" and it would display a thumbnail of that picture 100 pixels wide and proportionally high. This is an excellent way to produce dynamic pictures as well as protect your online photographs (show thumbnails to visitors, full sized pictures to members), and the .NET GDI+ classes are straight-forward and easy to use. Ever since then I have been looking for a book which goes into deeper detail of creating graphics in .NET with the GDI+ classes. Wrox has finally produced this book! In chapters 1 through 10 you get the basics: pens, brushes, texts, fonts, image manipulation, paths, regions and printing. Then in the rest of the book you learn how to make custom controls which create custom graphics (I love books that teach two things at a time -- great for developers who do four things at a time). If you read this book, you will think about graphics differently, namely, as dynamic objects which your application, the user and the environment can manipulate at run time. Very exciting.GDI+ Programming: Creating Custom Controls Using C# OverviewWhether you are using Windows Forms to build rich-clientbusiness applications or the ASP.NET framework to build powerful webapplications or web services, the use of well-designed graphics willgreatly enhance their usability, impact, and visual appeal. This bookprovides a comprehensive guide to the use of GDI+ in .NET applicationsand aims to provide developers with all the information they need tobuild effective custom controls. The opening section of the book investigates the .NET Frameworkclasses that implement GDI+. It covers all of the classes, methods andtechniques needed to create, manipulate, and display precise graphicsin a form, a page being sent to a printer or an image. On this foundation, the second section describes how to design andbuild effective custom controls for use in a businessenvironment. Topics covered include building composite controls, implementing keyboard navigation, and enhancing design-time support. The final section of the book explores the use of GDI+ and ASP.NET tobuild custom controls that can provide reusable, GUI components forweb projects and to deliver customized graphics over the Internet.

Building a Web 2.0 Portal with ASP.Net 3.5: None ReviewI've read the author's articles on Code Project, and when I found out he had written a book that built on them, I didn't waste any time getting my hands on it!
Being the one of the few developers in my group that work with the latest "cutting edge" technology, and with no one to answer the questions I have, this book has simply been the fountain of knowledge I'd been looking for. Definitely a must-read for those wishing to utilize the latest and greatest.
The book is well organized, and the writing style makes it an easy read (usually technical books put me to sleep, but not this one). It does assume that you've already had some experience using ASP.NET 2.0/3.5, Javascript, and so forth, so I agree that this book will be the most beneficial to seasoned and advanced ASP.NET developers.
Building a Web 2.0 Portal with ASP.Net 3.5: None Overview
If you think you're well versed in ASP.NET, think again. This exceptional guide gives you a master class in site building with ASP.NET 3.5 and other cutting-edge Microsoft technologies. You learn how to develop rock-solid web portal applications that can withstand millions of hits every day while surviving scalability and security pressures -- not just for mass-consumer homepages, but also for dashboards that deliver powerful content aggregation for enterprises. Written by Omar AL Zabir, co-founder and CTO of Pageflakes, Building a Web 2.0 Portal with ASP.NET 3.5 demonstrates how to develop portals similar to My Yahoo!, iGoogle, and Pageflakes using ASP.NET 3.5, ASP.NET AJAX, Windows Workflow Foundation, LINQ and .NET 3.5. Through the course of the book, AL Zabir builds an open source Ajax-enabled portal prototype (available online at www.dropthings.com), and walks you though the design and architectural challenges, advanced Ajax concepts, performance optimization techniques, and server-side scalability problems involved. You learn how to:

Implement a highly decoupled architecture following the popular n-tier, widget-based application model
Provide drag-and-drop functionality, and use ASP.NET 3.5 to build the server-side part of the web layer
Use LINQ to build the data access layer, and Windows Workflow Foundation to build the business layer as a collection of workflows
Build client-side widgets using JavaScript for faster performance and better caching
Get maximum performance out of the ASP.NET AJAX Framework for faster, more dynamic, and scalable sites
Build a custom web service call handler to overcome shortcomings in ASP.NET AJAX 1.0 for asynchronous, transactional, cache-friendly web services
Overcome JavaScript performance problems, and help the user interface load faster and be more responsive
Solve scalability and security problems as your site grows from hundreds to millions of users
Deploy and run a high-volume production site while solving software, hardware, hosting, and Internet infrastructure problems
Building a Web 2.0 Portal with ASP.NET 3.5 also presents real-world ASP.NET challenges that the author has solved in building educational and enterprise portals, plus thirteen production disasters common to web applications serving millions of users. If you're ready to build state-of-the art, high-volume web applications, this book has exactly what you need.

C# and the .NET Platform ReviewI was informed by my manager to purchase a C# book, and I set out to do some research as to which book would fit my needs. I stumbled on this title as one recommended instead of another that was reviewed here on Amazon.com Based on the reviews posted for this book, I decided to purchase it. The positive reviews for this book are well-founded.
One of the very first things I noticed about this book is that it has a sticker on it that says that online updates for the final version of .NET are available. I went to the site and downloaded the list of changes to the book. The list was actually fairly short and the changes straightforward. I regard this as a good sign.
The book is well laid out and clear, the first 130+ pages dedicated to fundamental concepts and structures of C#. A 70-page introduction to OOP, in the context of C#, follows. The next few chapters deal with advanced topics including container classes and threads. Next the reader is launched into more graphically-oriented topics. Finally, the topics move into such as object serialization, database access, and web-centric subjects. The progression from subject to subject is logical and smooth, and each section is written clearly so as not to leave the reader in the dark and each presented after its prerequisites.
Example code in this book is clear, concise, and explained. The source to the examples is *not* included with the book, but is available readily for download.
This book is a great start into C# and .NET. It is *not* comprehensive, but it covers most of the important topics that get used regularly. Seriously consider this title when investigating C# and/or .NET.C# and the .NET Platform Overview

Beginning C# Game Programming (Game Development) Review"Beginning C# Game Programming" is Ron Penton's third effort in game book-authorship. It's a ground-up tutorial on the C# programming language, starting from the obligatory "Hello World" program and ending with a pretty rudimentary "spaceship at the bottom of the screen shooting at things coming down at you" game called "Generic Space Shooter 3000".
If you're already an old hand at similar languages like Java or C++, then the first half of the book won't be much more than a refresher for you. The first half of the book covers simple screen output, followed by primitive types, operators, looping, classes, arrays and file streams. It covers these topics fairly quickly (all in about 120 pages), so you won't be spending much time on each topic. Apart from one significant exception, the language tutorial is well-organized.
The "significant exception" raises its head with chapter 6 (creating a project). After spending 120 pages learning how to write, compile, and execute small bits of C# code, chapter 6 shows you how to set up a project in SharpDevelop (a free C# programming environment). If you need help compiling your code in chapters 1-5, the only help you'll get is a brief mention of Visual Studio.NET, SharpDevelop, or the C# command-line compiler. If you invest in a copy of "Beginning C# Game Programming", I recommend that you read chapter 6 first. Then go back to chapters 1-5. Finally, head over to chapter 7 and build yourself a space-shooter for the rest of the book.
The space shooter chapters are well-done, with good coverage of doing directX graphics in C#. The topics covered are a bit large for such a simple example game (alpha-blending, force-feedback, direct3D), but this is done with the understanding that you'll be wanting to write a more significant game than "Generic Space Shooter 3000" by the time you're done with the book.
If you want a good "ground-up" start with C# game programming, "Beginning C# Game Programming" is a good start. It takes you from the very beginning to a complete arcade game.
Just don't read it in order.Beginning C# Game Programming (Game Development) Overview"Beginning C# Game Programming" approaches the topic of programming with C# for a total beginner, first easing the reader into the techniques of C#, and then slowly combining all of the information together enabling the reader to create a complete computer game. Divided into two comprehensive sections, this book first provides readers with the techniques and skills that they need to program with C#, including the basics of .NET and computer programming. The second section concentrates on programming for games. Readers will learn how to use C# to interface with DirectX 9 and will cover the basics of graphics, input, and sound.

Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 in C# 2005: From Novice to Professional (Beginning: From Novice to Professional) ReviewThis book is a new edition of the excellent book "Beginning ASP.NET 1.1 in C#". I've read both, so I can freely say that this is an example of the good getting better. Quite simply, there is no other book I'd recommend for new ASP.NET developers. This one is more rigorous, organized, and thorough than any other beginner book I've found. It hits all the bases--covering the C# language, OOP, Visual Studio, web services, components, custom controls, you name it. It's also one of the few books that has real-world code in the database and security chapters. (Most other beginner books dumb it down with truly useless techniques.)
And in response to the review left by "developer" who claims the book is short on ASP.NET 2.0 content--I have to wonder whether you've read the book! Did you not see the complete chapters on master pages and themes, website navigation, the new data controls, membership, profiles, and web parts?? All of these are brand new features, with comprehensive coverage.
There is just no other book for beginning ASP.NET 2.0.Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 in C# 2005: From Novice to Professional (Beginning: From Novice to Professional) OverviewAn up-to-date and comprehensive introductory ASP.NET book, Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 in C#: From Novice to Professional guides you through Microsoft's latest technology for building dynamic websites. This book will enable you to build dynamic web pages on the fly, and it assumes only the most basic knowledge of C#. Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 in C# From Novice to Professional provides exhaustive coverage of ASP.NET, guiding you from your first steps right up to the most advanced techniques, such as querying databases from within a web page and performance-tuning your site. You'll find tips for "best practices" and comprehensive discussions of key database and XML principles you need to know in order to be effective with ASP.NET. The book also emphasizes the invaluable coding techniques of object orientation and code behind, which will start you off on the track to build real-world websites right from the beginning - rather than just faking it with simplified coding practices. By the time you've finished the book, you will have mastered the core techniques and have all the knowledge you need to begin work as a professional ASP.NET developer.

Microsoft Visual C#(TM) .NET Language Reference (Pro-Documentation) ReviewIf you are looking for a book that nicely summarizes the C# language into a (non-MSDN) text, then this does a good job. It is well organized and keywords, functions, statements, etc are easy to find and cross-reference. The sample code is relatively useful, but sometimes challenging to figure out. I'd therefore recommend this book for intermediate-to-experienced C# developers.Microsoft Visual C#(TM) .NET Language Reference (Pro-Documentation) Overview
