Microsoft SharePoint 2010: Building Solutions for SharePoint 2010 (Books for Professionals by Professionals) ReviewFirst, this book is good. I would recommend it without question to developers who are working on the SharePoint platform. Sahil Malik covers many of the new features as well as goes over some of the basics in a practical, mostly easy to read manner; there's practical advice in every chapter that you'll want to highlight and tuck away in your brain.
However, it's pretty apparent that the book was rushed (at least editorially) due to the large number of grammar mistakes, awkward sentences, terrible analogies (some of them a bit inappropriate in any textbook), and somewhat questionable _structure_ of the content.
Again, Sahil does a good job of capturing a lot of the key changes in 2010 and gives good examples (chapter 5 being the most interesting to me, personally). If I were grading on content alone, the book would be closer to 5 stars. It's the editing team at Apress that have let down Mr. Malik by not putting enough attention in properly structuring and organizing the content and not performing adequate proofreading. I feel that many of the concepts and ideas could have been organized a bit differently and more coherently to help the reader better link the concepts together and have a clearer path to ramping up. It may have helped if the book had a more focused target audience (Mr. Malik himself points out that the book is broad in nature).
That said, as I mentioned in the opening of the review, I would definitely recommend this for SharePoint developers who are transitioning or preparing to transition from 2007. Despite it's flaws, it's still worthy of the time and money that you'll invest in it. I do wish that the author had gone into more detail regarding best practices and design patterns for developing solutions in SharePoint; this is an area that is sorely missing in terms of publications. Mr. Malik might have made the book even better by incorporating the different examples around a central solution or problem instead of the scattershot approach of one-off examples. I bought this book not knowing anything about sockets. All I knew was that I had to use them for my next project. I bought this book, and within 2 weeks time had developed a full-scale proof-of-concept, distributed, client-server type application communicating over TCP/IP and using UDP for multicasting.
The examples are concise and practical, including examples of data framing/parsing and how to deal with different wire formats (big/little endian).

Programming Web Services With SOAP ReviewThis book was a disappointment. I got thrown into an XML/SOAP project and had to get up to speed in short order. After struggling on my own for a while I bought this book hoping it would have lots of meat on actually using SOAP::Lite, but it had pretty thin coverage.
I did like the big-picture overview of the various technologies, but it was not very helpful in writing an actual SOAP client to talk to a third party's SOAP server. Considering that the author of SOAP::Lite also wrote this book, it seems to me that there could have been a whole chapter on SOAP::Lite from the client view.
This will stay on my shelf as a reference, but for getting up to speed rapidly on actually writing a SOAP client, it was a bust.Programming Web Services With SOAP Overview

C# Network Programming ReviewThis is a good book if you are a systems admin (like the author) wanting to write simple network programs in C#. However, the author has a very limited knowledge of .NET programming. In most of his numerous code samples, his ignorance of CLR fundamentals shine through. For instance, on page 192 he has these lines of code in the VarTcpSrvr.cs listing:
byte[] datasize = new byte[4];
datasize = BitConverter.GetBytes(size);
The first line of code creates a new byte array named datasize on the managed heap. Then the call to BitConverter.GetBytes(...) returns another byte array and stores the reference in datasize! The first byte array will now be garbage collected, as it is no longer referenced and was never used in the first place. The book is filled with code examples like this.
If you are a professional developer, the book doesn't have much to offer, as you will likely already know nearly as much as (if not more than) the author. Not to mention, seeing all the poor coding samples will likely become a distraction. I still give this book three stars because the networking content is good and the code samples do, in fact, seem to work. They just happen to be coded poorly. Since the author doesn't really understand the platform he's coding on, approach with caution -- especially if you are a beginner.C# Network Programming OverviewOn its own, C# simplifies network programming. Combine it with the precise instruction found in C# Network Programming, and you'll find that building network applications is easier and quicker than ever.
This book helps newcomers get started with a look at the basics of network programming as they relate to C#, including the language's network classes, the Winsock interface, and DNS resolution. Spend as much time here as you need, then dig into the core topics of the network layer. You'll learn to make sockets connections via TCP and "connectionless" connections via UDP. You'll also discover just how much help C# gives you with some of your toughest chores, such as asynchronous socket programming, multithreading, and multicasting.
Network-layer techniques are just a means to an end, of course, and so this book keeps going, providing a series of detailed application-layer programming examples that show you how to work with real protocols and real network environments to build and implement a variety of applications. Use SNMP to manage network devices, SMTP to communicate with remote mail servers, and HTTP to Web-enable your applications. And use classes native to C# to query and modify Active Directory entries.
Rounding it all out is plenty of advanced coverage to push your C# network programming skills to the limit. For example, you'll learn two ways to share application methods across the network: using Web services and remoting. You'll also master the security features intrinsic to C# and .NET--features that stand to benefit all of your programming projects.

Cisco SG 300-10 (SRW2008-K9-NA) 10-Port Gigabit Managed Switch ReviewI needed to segment out my network into separate collision domains because I have a TON of LAN traffic. You'd be amazed how much junk gets on a advanced home network if you were to truly investigate your LAN traffic. This switch assumes you know CCNA level switch technologies and routing. If you want plug and play, go away from this model and just buy a un-managed switch. Me on the other hand, I want full management, network segmentation, Quality of Service, Access Control Lists, the whole 9 yards. This switch does not use the standard Cisco IOS set of commands so the GUI and menu driven CLI took some getting use to. Provides great network performance, secure collision domains, remote management is wonderful, SNMP features are fabulous and at a great price for the package.
