Building Content Type Solutions in SharePoint 2007 ReviewThis is a good book for someone trying to customize sharepoint without doing a lot of programming. It does provide some concepts while walking one through actually creating a sample application. I would have perferred a bit more on concepts but it it gets the job done.Building Content Type Solutions in SharePoint 2007 OverviewContent types are a core concept used throughout the functionality and services offered in SharePoint 2007, and are designed to help users organize their SharePoint content in a more meaningful manner. A content type is a reusable collection of settings users apply to a certain category of content in order to manage the metadata and behaviors of a document or item type in a centralized, reusable way. If you have ever created or thought about creating document-centric SharePoint solutions, then this book is for you. It teaches power users, administrators, and developers how to use SharePoint content types and walks them through the process of creating one in a sample scenario. The first two chapters provide an overview of content types and can be read by anyone who has had experience with SharePoint. Chapters 3 through 8 are targeted at SharePoint power users and administrators, offering details about the components of document content types and walking readers through the process of creating a sample performance appraisal solution. The last two chapters are geared toward developers and describe how to programmatically manipulate the sample performance appraisal solution with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. Topics covered include creating columns, associating document templates, customizing the Document Information Panel, adding workflows, defining an information management policy, reusing content types within a site collection, and programmatically manipulating a content type.

Microsoft SharePoint 2010: Building Solutions for SharePoint 2010 (Books for Professionals by Professionals) ReviewFirst, this book is good. I would recommend it without question to developers who are working on the SharePoint platform. Sahil Malik covers many of the new features as well as goes over some of the basics in a practical, mostly easy to read manner; there's practical advice in every chapter that you'll want to highlight and tuck away in your brain.
However, it's pretty apparent that the book was rushed (at least editorially) due to the large number of grammar mistakes, awkward sentences, terrible analogies (some of them a bit inappropriate in any textbook), and somewhat questionable _structure_ of the content.
Again, Sahil does a good job of capturing a lot of the key changes in 2010 and gives good examples (chapter 5 being the most interesting to me, personally). If I were grading on content alone, the book would be closer to 5 stars. It's the editing team at Apress that have let down Mr. Malik by not putting enough attention in properly structuring and organizing the content and not performing adequate proofreading. I feel that many of the concepts and ideas could have been organized a bit differently and more coherently to help the reader better link the concepts together and have a clearer path to ramping up. It may have helped if the book had a more focused target audience (Mr. Malik himself points out that the book is broad in nature).
That said, as I mentioned in the opening of the review, I would definitely recommend this for SharePoint developers who are transitioning or preparing to transition from 2007. Despite it's flaws, it's still worthy of the time and money that you'll invest in it. I do wish that the author had gone into more detail regarding best practices and design patterns for developing solutions in SharePoint; this is an area that is sorely missing in terms of publications. Mr. Malik might have made the book even better by incorporating the different examples around a central solution or problem instead of the scattershot approach of one-off examples. In other words, his examples (in a book with "Building Solutions" in the title) would have been better served in the context of a more comprehensive, overarching example.Microsoft SharePoint 2010: Building Solutions for SharePoint 2010 (Books for Professionals by Professionals) OverviewMicrosoft SharePoint 2010: Building Solutions for SharePoint 2010 is a fresh take on our market-leading book on Microsoft's premier collaboration solution. This book features a complete focus on the new features and capabilities of SharePoint 2010. The reader gains intermediate-level guidance for designing and deploying exciting business solutions based on the new version of SharePoint.

Professional SharePoint 2007 Development (Programmer to Programmer) ReviewMost of the SharePoint books out there focus on the basic features of WSS, including lists, document libraries, views, blogs, wikis, etc. Although these are integral parts of SharePoint, they don't begin to scratch the surface of what it has to offer.
This book begins to cover these details. Topics such as building a true development/production environment, designing an enterprise portal application, creating custom field types (not just creating custom columns), creating web parts, building custom features and solutions, and programming through the object model are important to SharePoint developers creating SharePoint content in Visual Studio.
This book also takes great aim as documenting that which hasn't been documented yet, especially the XML schemas of features, elements, and solutions.
Finally, the book focuses on the enterprise portal features of MOSS, including Excel services, the Business Data Catalog, Enterprise Search, and Document Management.
Because this book focuses heavily on development, Content Managers will be better off choosing another book from the many out there for creating lists, customizing master pages, creating style sheets, and other content topics.
But for SharePoint portal architects and development programmers, this is your book. There's a wealth of information in this book and deserves to be in your library.Professional SharePoint 2007 Development (Programmer to Programmer) OverviewIf you're a .NET or Microsoft Office developer, this book will give you the tools and the techniques you need to build great solutions for the SharePoint platform. It offers practical insights that will help you take advantage of this powerful new integrated suite of server-based collaboration software tools along with specific examples that show you how to implement your own custom solutions. You'll then be able to apply this information to create collaborative web-based applications that enhance user productivity and deliver rich user experiences.
You'll start by building a strong foundation based on a thorough understanding of the technologies that come with the SharePoint platform, while also drilling into specific implementation areas. Next, you'll dive into seven key SharePoint development areas: the base collaboration platform, portal and composite application frameworks, enterprise search, ECM, business process automation and workflow, electronic forms, and business intelligence.
This book is for ASP.NET developers who want to add collaboration support to their existing applications, Windows/Office client developers who want to move their solutions from the desktop to the web, and experienced SharePoint version 2.0 developers who want to take advantage of the new capabilities available in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
You will learn all about Windows SharePoint Services and MOSS 2007, including the following:

Ways to enhance collaboration using calendars, tasks, issues, and email alerts

Techniques for developing applications with integrated RSS, blogs and Wikis

How to build, configure, and manage portal solutions

Strategies for using enterprise search, XML, and XSLT

Methods for improving enterprise content management and business intelligence

Ways to take advantage of built-in support for regulatory compliance and web publishing

How to create custom workflows and integrate them into your solutions

Professional Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Workflow Programming ReviewI was looking for a book that satisfied 4 criteria: 1. Must be SharePoint 2007. 2. Must have a large section about custom workflows. 3. Must be written with Visual Studio 2008 in mind. 4. Must be able to answer the questions I needed answer to.
Had I found this book when I was just starting off with custom workflows, I would have been elated! The author has some really good bits of information and he did indeed answer the questions I needed answers to.
The downside of this book is that it is filled with lots of "fluff". Code snippets were repeated over and over and sections of text seemed to be cut from one section of the book and pasted into another.
He also goes into detail about how the Windows workflow API would be coded when, in Visual Studio with SharePoint extensions, you just drag and drop a control and it writes the required code for you. I'm sure there are those who want to know every detail about how the controls work, but I am not one of those. Interestingly, he delved deeply into the API, but skipped over setting up the environment (VS2008). It would have been nice to see how he structured the projects in VS 2008 since the layout is completely different from VS 2005.
Of the almost 600 pages, probably 250 of those were useful. I would recommend this book to those working with custom workflows, especially to those just starting off with them. Just skip a few pages now and again and you will be happy.Professional Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Workflow Programming OverviewMicrosoft Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 provide you with a rich framework for collaborative applications. Packed with practical, real-world examples, this book offers you clear instructions for implementing workflow, custom activities, and conditions into SharePoint applications. You'll discover how to deploy workflow template files and features, program SharePoint external data exchange, send WCF messages from a SharePoint workflow, and develop custom Office SharePoint Designer 2007 actions and conditions.

Professional K2 blackpearl (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewThis book is a great resource for those new to Business Process Management (BPM) and for those that have had years of experience. It starts off with a primer for those that are unfamiliar with the terms and jargon of the BPM industry and quickly jumps into the usage and applicability of K2 blackpearl to address real-world BPM challenges.
Anyone looking to include or enhance workflow & BPM efforts to their new or existing projects should buy this book. Anyone working with Microsoft products and technologies --- especially SharePoint Server (MOSS), BizTalk, and notably InfoPath will find that the design, development, and deployment of workflow / BPM solutions are significantly improved. Some of the tips & tricks in the book include sections for including Line-of-Business (LOB) data from other applications like SAP, MS-CRM, and the methodology to include LOB information to create enterprise-wide workflow & BPM solutions.
The book also addresses the perennial question of Build or Buy. I think after reading this book you will know the answer. The answer makes perfects sense, but will surprise many.
I have had the privilege of working with many of these authors in my career. I'm glad to see they put their collective knowledge together in one easy to use compendium. Well done!
Professional K2 blackpearl (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewK2 blackpearl and the K2 platform is a large, powerful, "game-changing" application platform built on Microsoft technologies. Understanding it from top to bottom would be a great task for a single person, which is why we have gathered more than a dozen authors to supply you with the information to successfully transform your company into a process-oriented, efficient business that can grow with the K2 platform.
Since this is the first book on K2 blackpearl, you will find a broad range of topics in this book, from the market in which K2 blackpearl is aimed to the architecture of the platform, from how to approach process design to developing your own custom user manager.
The first part of the book is meant for everyone and provides an understanding of K2 blackpearl and where it fits in the marketplace. It is included to provide a framework for thinking about various aspects of process-driven applications, including how they differ from business process management techniques; identifying processes in your company to automate, the different pieces that make up a process; measuring the success of your efforts; and finally shifting your company's culture in the direction of process efficiency. This section may be the only section you need to read if you are sponsoring a process improvement effort in your company. If you are responsible for leading the effort, make sure to read Chapters 3 and 4.
The other parts are meant to provide details on how to effectively deploy and use K2 blackpearl and include a broad range of topics. Read what you are most interested in, but also make sure to read Chapter 8, which will give you a great foundation to start designing processes with K2 blackpearl. Chapter 14 is also recommended for everyone because it provides an overview of the available K2 Designers and how you can share projects among them.
If you are a developer, you may be tempted to flip through the book looking for code, and you will find some, but we also recommend reading much of the rest of the book to learn how the API and the K2 platform extensions fit within the overall process-driven application environment. Pay particular attention to Chapter 22 and the Appendix, which may save you hours of coding or give you a no-code solution to something that you may have thought would take hundreds of lines of code to accomplish.
If you are an administrators, focus on Parts II and IV, but also take a look at the other chapters to gain an understanding of how your users will be using K2.
K2 blackpearl is the main subject of this book, although we devote an entire chapter, Chapter 23, to the add-on product K2 connect to give you an understanding of how to bring SAP data into your processes. We also talk a bit about K2 blackpoint, particularly in the SharePoint chapters. Since K2 blackpoint is built on the K2 blackpearl foundation, many of the same concepts apply to that product as well, but we do not point out the differences between K2 blackpearl and K2 blackpoint. For that information browse to www.k2.com.
We recommend that you approach this book in parts and perhaps read or reference each part differently. If you are working on a team, each member of the team may find one part more interesting to them than the other sections; that is expected and is how we designed the book.
Part I, "Introduction to K2 blackpearl and Process-Driven Applications": The first four chapters discuss what K2 blackpearl is, how the applications you can design may or may not fit the business process management (BPM) model, how to go about identifying and designing processes, and last how to measure results and shift the culture of your company to a more process-oriented business.
Part II, "Architecture and Installation Options for K2 blackpearl": Chapters 5 and 6 will get you started. Installing the K2 blackpearl components is a necessary step before you can start designing processes, so in these two chapters you will gain an understanding of all of the pieces of the platform, the architecture, and the supporting technology, as well as ideas on how to plan out your development, QA/staging, and production environments.
Part III, "K2 blackpearl Process Planning and Design Essentials": Chapters 7 through 14 give you a ton of information about how to design, build, extend, and generally work with the main pieces of the platform. From a step-by-step tutorial on building your first process to how to share processes across the different K2 Designers, you'll learn all of what you need to really get ramped up. Pay particular attention to Chapters 8 and 11, which cover the basic things you need to know about process planning and the various concepts of process design with K2 blackpearl and then provide an in-depth view of the available forms technologies that you can use for user interaction with your processes. If you are particularly interested in SharePoint, make sure to read Chapters 12 and 13.
Part IV, "Administration of K2 blackpearl": Chapters 15 through 20 offer an administrator's view into the platform. Things like disaster recovery, logging, security, and using the K2 Workspace for notifications, reports, assigning process permissions, and recovering from errors are all key aspects of the platform that you or someone in your company will have to understand. This section gives you everything you need to know and probably more, including how to build your own user manager to plug into the K2 platform.
Part V, "Advanced K2 blackpearl Concepts and Platform Extensions": The last part includes Chapters 21 through 23, and these chapters are there to round out the discussion of the platform. You'll find information about using the Event Bus to surface outside events to the K2 server and a discussion of tailoring the platform and your processes to your particular needs by going beyond the default settings of the components that you learned about in Chapter 8. Finally you'll learn about the K2 connect platform extension, which allows data from SAP (and eventually any system for which a WCF LOB adapter is released) to be used within your processes.

There are some pieces of this book that you can sit down and read without needing a computer or access to K2 blackpearl at all, but much of this book requires you to have access to K2 blackpearl and the supporting applications as well. Whenever we talk about designing processes, we do so in the context of the K2 Designer for Visual Studio. To install this component you will need Visual Studio 2005. Support for Visual Studio 2008 may be available by the time this book is published, so look for that on www.k2.com.
For the server pieces of the platform, you will need a Windows Server 2003 environment (virtual or otherwise) and the additional components required by the K2 server.

Expert WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Programming (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewI've read this book and refer back to it all the time. We're rolling out MOSS 2007, with custom site definitions, using feature stapling, custom cross site navigation, features with receivers. I've created content types, list definitions out of this book. I easily use this book more than any other. The reading is more in depth that a lot of other books that I've read on MOSS, but I appreciate learning and understanding the details. I have found that I've had to reread a chapter, or come back to a chapter to digest the information. The examples are good. The only criticism I'd have of the book, is that I wish there was more of it.Expert WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Programming (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewWindows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) is a built-in feature of Windows Server that allows for the development of collaborative business applications. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) is an integrated server offering that leverages the WSS 3.0 features of Windows Server and adds an additional 100+ collaborative features. With WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 combined, you can create a variety of highly collaborative business applications. Using numerous practical, real-world examples, this book discusses implementing custom master pages, programming against site pages, implementing custom application pages, developing custom server controls, and extending existing controls.

ASP.Net 2.0 Web Parts in Action: Building Dynamic Web Portals ReviewAlthough SharePoint 2003 allowed us to create Web Parts, it was tedious and you couldn't use it outside of SharePoint. Microsoft upped the ante with the release of ASP.NET 2.0. You can create Web Parts in ASP.NET 2.0 and use them in both ASP.NET web sites and SharePoint 2007.
Darren has written a very solid book on Web Parts. This book covers different areas of the Web Part framework and the author does a very good job of explaining the subject in a clear manner. Darren starts at the beginning (explaining portals and web parts) and moves to more advanced areas. Darren also covers areas such as SharePoint, AJAX, and discussing other portals such as Live.com (including how to build a gadget).
I did run into a few issues with the book's source code but after posting the issues on the book's forum, Darren had a fix for me within 12 hours. This book also covers some areas which I have not seen before such as splitting out the catalog into a separate web page. There are numerous extensions discussed where I said out loud: "I didn't know it could do that!".
[...]ASP.Net 2.0 Web Parts in Action: Building Dynamic Web Portals Overview
"A must-buy for every ASP.NET developer using Web Parts." Scott Guthrie General Manager Microsoft Developer Division

"Squeezes the full potential out of ASP.NET Web Parts." Andres Sanabria Lead Program Manager ASP.NET and Server Application Frameworks

Using Web Parts, ASP.NET developers can create portals with the same advanced features found in sites such as Live.com and Google ig.

ASP.NET 2.0 Web Parts in Action demystifies portal design, development, maintenance, and deployment. In over 400 code-packed pages, ASP.NET expert Darren Neimke shares his deep understanding of the controls and services that make up the portal framework.

This book will help you to code like a guru but think like a user. For example, you'll discover how to use Web Parts to reduce four-step actions to a single click with a strategically-placed edit button. Learn to balance features and usability to make your portals both look good and work well.

ASP.NET 2.0 Web Parts in Action gives you the tools you need to move your ideas off the whiteboard and bring them to life. Find out how to provide the personalization options your users want while preserving the look and feel of your portals with solid designs and custom chrome. Create usable information dashboards and tackle tough interoperability questions with confidence.

All the information in this book is performance-tested. Author Darren Neimke walks you through Web Parts concepts including static and dynamic connections, WebPartManager, SQLPersonalizationProvider, and the hot new ASP.NET Atlas framework.

Whether you're creating custom solutions or adding Web Parts to SharePoint 2007, exploring Atlas or dabbling in gadgets, ASP.NET 2.0 Web Parts in Action will get you started and guide you as you build successful portals using ASP.NET Web Parts.

Advanced SharePoint Services Solutions (Books for Professionals by Professionals) Review"Advanced Sharepoint Services Solutions" is the second book by Scott Hiller, on Sharepoint Technologies. The first one was about building basic web parts. This book is for developers who have good knowledge of Sharepoint technologies. It is also assumed that you have already built some web parts and also have good understanding of .NET development. If you are looking for basic Sharepoint stuff, refer to his other book "Microsoft Sharepoint Building Office 2003 Solutions".
The Advanced book is not a complete reference on Sharepoint technologies. Instead it contains 8 chapters, which covers widely different areas. There are few chapters which are not covered by other Sharepoint books. This book is good source for CAML, Information Bridge Framework, Business Scorecard Accelerator, Sharepoint and BizTalk Integration, and for Sharepoint and Content Management Server Integration.
Since these topics are usually not covered in regular Sharepoint books, it becomes good source for these topics.
The book has good amount of source code (in C#) along with the text and provides some great ideas for system integrations. But as I said before it is not a complete reference book, just some great solutions for customizing and integrating Sharepoint technologies.
Advanced SharePoint Services Solutions (Books for Professionals by Professionals) OverviewThis book will cover advanced techniques for programming web parts and SharePoint Services. It will also cover advanced integration techniques with related products such as BizTalk Server 2004 and Content Server. Intended for advanced developers who already know all of the basic SharePoint Services, this book will aid them as they solve specific advanced problems.

The Rational Guide to Building SharePoint Web Parts (Rational Guides) ReviewOverall it provides a very good quick start to writing web parts. My one gripe is that they include "Bonus Material" that can be downloaded when you register your book with them (ie: give them all your personal information) such as chapters on "Using the WPPackager Application" and "Using External Resources". Just what I want, to print out material to stick in my book. It makes sense to have the examples and sample web parts available for download but chapters of the book should be published with the book!!!
I had hoped this would be more like an O'Rielly Nutshell book which are generally short on blah blah and long on reference material. Unfortunately it gets verbose in many places and only provides reference to the most commonly used objects, methods, and properties.
All the same it pulls together enough information to get you started quickly in a small enough book that you can actually use it.The Rational Guide to Building SharePoint Web Parts (Rational Guides) OverviewLearn the complex issues in creating Web Parts for SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services (built into Windows Server 2003). Save countless hours by learning the correct way to develop Web Parts. This book does not cover SharePoint administration...it just dives right into Web Part development and related issues. This book takes a rational, no-nonsense approach in a compact guide - only 176pages. The book is written for a beginner to intermediate-level developer, so you get the basics...fast! It covers the basics of virtually all areas of managing SharePoint Web Parts, including creation, testing, and deployment. Technical accuracy is assured by Zac Woodall, Program Manager, Office DBI, Microsoft Corporation. This book comes with free bonus materials: 1. Extra Chapter - Using the WPPackager 2.
