Code Complete (Microsoft Programming Series) ReviewAbout previous comments: Verbose? Don't think so, every page has some piece of valuable information
For beginners only? Don't think so, but if you are a beginner this is a good place to start. After several years of programming you'll mostly stop thinking about style and follow your habits... so you better have some good habits!
Insistence on using hungarian naming convention? Not at all, did you read this book? The author did talk about this convention but he also gives examples why this is can be bad (and also why it can be good).
This book covers a wide range of material, from variable declaration to software estimation and probably everything concerning software construction.
Also as this book talks a lot about style, the best thing is it is backed up with hard facts not just because of personal preference.
The examples are written in several languages (such as C, Pascal and Basic). One chapter is devoted to object orientation. Although you're heavily into OOP then in no way should you skip over this book as the advices in this book can be applied to every methodology of programming. So this book is in no way out dated.
Each chapter has a 'recommended reading' section so you know where to go for more. This is extremely handy.
I've read this book several times and I just love it. I own every book written by the author. Check them out also - they are very good too.
Summary: This book teaches you how you can write good and self-describing code. I wished every program I've had to read had been written by programmers who read this book and applied that knowledge.
Thanks, ABOCode Complete (Microsoft Programming Series) OverviewHere is a thorough expert look at the intricate process of commercial software development. The text is rich in example code, contains powerful insights on managing technical yet creative people, and examines each milestone in software development in considerable detail. Ideal for professional, self-taught, and student programmers.

Programming and Customizing the AVR Microcontroller ReviewIf you already know the Atmel AVR instruction set, skip this book...it is not for you. If you are new to microcontrollers and are thinking about getting into the wonderful Atmel AVR products, this is a great assembly level reference.
Sure...you could pick up datasheets and struggle with the cryptic explanations of the various commands. You could try to read multiple app notes on the Atmel web site. But for a good general overview of what this processor can do, along with well annotated examples, pick this book up.
As a total beginner, myself, this was my first foray into microcontrollers, and this particular book really helped my *comfort level*. "Comfort", it turns out, is an important part to coding one's first project. The examples on the CD are a little slim, but do have some useful sections of code.
Finally, if you have not done so already (I hope amazon lets me put in this address), check out www.avrfreaks.org AvrFreaks.org is the definitive site for questions, answers, examples from real users of the AVR controllers. Combine this book with the AVRFreaks web site and you'll feel like you can accomplish just about anything.
Best of luck.Programming and Customizing the AVR Microcontroller OverviewThis reader-friendly guide shows you how to take charge of the newest, mostversatile microcontrollers around, Atmel's AVR RISC chip family. Inside, Electronics World writer and astronomy instrumentation developer Dhananjay V. Gadre walks you from first meeting these exciting new computers-on-a-chip all the way through design and ready-to-launch products.

TCP/IP Sockets in C#: Practical Guide for Programmers (The Practical Guides) ReviewI loved this book!
I bought this book not knowing anything about sockets. All I knew was that I had to use them for my next project. I bought this book, and within 2 weeks time had developed a full-scale proof-of-concept, distributed, client-server type application communicating over TCP/IP and using UDP for multicasting.
The examples are concise and practical, including examples of data framing/parsing and how to deal with different wire formats (big/little endian).
This book is a must-have for any serious C# programmer.TCP/IP Sockets in C#: Practical Guide for Programmers (The Practical Guides) Overview

Mastering Visual C# .NET ReviewI read through this book at the local bookstore and then bought it online. I agree with the other reviewers: this book is simply the best one around.
There are so many books on C# now, but a few really shine as being great. This book is one of them.
I liked this book because it can be used as both a user guide to learn C# _and_ as a reference book to C# and .NET. No other book even comes close to that goal, and the authors have done a really great job.
Another great thing about this book is that it can be used by beginners and advanced users, so if you don't know C# you can learn everything you need from this book. Even if you don't know programming, this book is written in a style that you can understand - all without talking down to the reader.
There are also topics covered in this book not covered in any other book - such as security and other advanced topics.Mastering Visual C# .NET OverviewGet Everything You Can Out of Visual C# and the .NET Framework

Learning Python: Powerful Object-Oriented Programming ReviewThis book will teach you Python if you have a lot of patience and are willing to wade through many pages of text to get information. The author wastes a lot of ink stating things like "I'll introduce you to topic XYZ, but you will have to wait until a later chapter to go into detail." Or introducing a topic and then declaring it is outside the books (1216 page) scope. Here's an example from page 85:
"Text pattern matching is an advanced tool outside this book's scope, but readers with backgrounds in other scripting languages may be interested to know that to do pattern matching in Python, we import a module called re."
Pattern matching is a critical feature of any scripting language. I was surprised to see such an important topic thrown away.
The book is divided into sections. I've put page counts and a summary description of the content to further describe the glacial pace of the book:
Part 1: Getting Stared: Pages 1- 72
72 pages to tell you how to run a Python program.
Part 2: Types and Operations 73-258
186 pages to introduce Python types (strings, numbers, sequences, etc)
Page 3: Statements and Syntax - 259-392
If statements are not introduced until Part3.
At this point I gave up and started reading the online tutorial.Learning Python: Powerful Object-Oriented Programming Overview
Google and YouTube use Python because it's highly adaptable, easy to maintain, and allows for rapid development. If you want to write high-quality, efficient code that's easily integrated with other languages and tools, this hands-on book will help you be productive with Python quickly -- whether you're new to programming or just new to Python. It's an easy-to-follow self-paced tutorial, based on author and Python expert Mark Lutz's popular training course. Each chapter contains a stand-alone lesson on a key component of the language, and includes a unique Test Your Knowledge section with practical exercises and quizzes, so you can practice new skills and test your understanding as you go. You'll find lots of annotated examples and illustrations to help you get started with Python 3.0.

Learn about Python's major built-in object types, such as numbers, lists, and dictionaries

Practical Programming: An Introduction to Computer Science Using Python (Pragmatic Programmers) ReviewI had not programmed for 30 years and wanted to do a bit for a small project. After trying several Python books I found this one. I suspect that no one programming book will appeal to all, but this one was a great book to get me started again. Well-written. Good examples. Clear explanations.Practical Programming: An Introduction to Computer Science Using Python (Pragmatic Programmers) Overview
Computers are used in every part of science from ecology to particle physics. This introduction to computer science continually reinforces those ties by using real-world science problems as examples.Anyone who has taken a high school science class will be able to follow along as the book introduces the basics of programming, then goes on to show readers how to work with databases, download data from the web automatically, build graphical interfaces, and most importantly, how to think like a professional programmer. Topics covered include: Basic elements of programming from arithmetic to loops and if statements. Using functions and modules to organize programs. Using lists, sets, and dictionaries to organize data. Designing algorithms systematically. Debugging things when they go wrong. Creating and querying databases. Building graphical interfaces to make programs easier to use. Object-oriented programming and programming patterns.
