The Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance (Cambridge Handbooks in Psychology) ReviewThis is the book that got everybody all excited a few years ago. The Harvard Business Review published a paper by K. Anders Ericsson "Making of an Expert". The biggest fans wrote their own books based on Ericsson's paper including; Geoff Covin's Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else, Malcom Gadwell's Outliers: The Story of Success, Daniel Coyle's The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How. and a few other books. These other books are more commercially consumable products rather than research results and clinical explanations of talent development.
The The Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance (Cambridge Handbooks in Psychology) is not light reading and one has to be prepared to put in the time, but make no mistake it is the quintessential book on Expertise and Expert Performance. I refer to this book fairly often in my own work and find it indispensable. Some of the subjects I continue to revisit in this book are:
Historical Accounts of Experts
Breaking Down the Structure of Expertise
Examining the Domains of Expertise
Arts, Sports and Motor Skills
Games and Memory
Mechanisms of Mediating Expertise
If you're a teacher, coach, trainer, mentor, parent or desire passionately to become an expert in any field this is an investment well worth making. I also recommend this book to anyone who is familiar with Dr. Carol Dweck's work on Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, or [ [ASIN:1841690244 Self-theories: Their Role in Motivation, Personality, and Development (Essays in Social Psychology)]] . The Cambridge Handbook dovetails nicely with her work. The Cambridge Handbook of Expertise and Expert Performance (Cambridge Handbooks in Psychology) OverviewThis is the first handbook where the world's foremost 'experts on expertise' review our scientific knowledge on expertise and expert performance and how experts may differ from non-experts in terms of their development, training, reasoning, knowledge, social support, and innate talent. Methods are described for the study of experts' knowledge and their performance of representative tasks from their domain of expertise. The development of expertise is also studied by retrospective interviews and the daily lives of experts are studied with diaries. In 15 major domains of expertise, the leading researchers summarize our knowledge on the structure and acquisition of expert skill and knowledge and discuss future prospects. General issues that cut across most domains are reviewed in chapters on various aspects of expertise such as general and practical intelligence, differences in brain activity, self-regulated learning, deliberate practice, aging, knowledge management, and creativity.

How to Become Smarter ReviewRussian-born microbiologist Nikolai Shevchuk takes his years of self-tested theories about food and delivers this knowledge in an easy to read format called, "How To Become Smarter". Although I found the title misleading when considering the direction of the content, Shevchuk's book is crammed full of all kinds of information you won't find in other food resource books.
"How To Become Smarter" is Shevchuk's comprehensive and in-depth study of foods, food additives, and elimination diets and their affect on mental clarity and mood. While well documented and interesting, he also responsibly notes several times in the book that these experiments are self tests and not clinically proven. His tests do have limitations, though as his results are subjective and based on opinion, there are no experimental or control groups utilizing various ages or ethnicities, nor could there be any blind or double blind set ups for validity. He does point this out several times throughout the text to avoid misleading his readers. Shevchuk tackles such subjects as natural versus unnatural foods (ie. additives, flavor enhancers, coloring, etc), raw versus cooked foods and the chemical changes which occur as heat is added, and the effects of these foods on mood, concentration and such disorders as Attention Deficit and Hyperactivitiy Disorder (ADD/ADHD), testing, reading, and writing abilities, and a wide range of emotions and social tendencies. He offers elimination diet ideas for all types of intellectual, emotional, and social goals while pointing out that these diets are a temporary fix and not permanent solutions. The book ends rather abruptly after his chapter on social intelligence; Shevchuk offers no wrap up or conclusion for the reader.
I did find Shevchuk's "How To Become Smarter" title to be quite misleading; I was definitely not expecting a `food book'. Something like, "Mood Food", "Feed Your Mind", or "Anything and Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Food" would better suit the text while appealing to a wider audience (such as those interested in alternative, natural, and holistic health and wellness). With over 400 pages of details, observations, comparisons, research, suggested foods to eat or eliminate which relate to specific goals, the title "How To Become Smarter" didn't seem to do the book justice.
Nikolai Shevchuk writes an intelligent, organized book on the mental and physical effects of food on the human body. Meant to serve as informational versus clinically proven fact, "How To Become Smarter" is a great resource!
How to Become Smarter OverviewYou can download and read this book for free (see the download link in the free sample) and you will have to pay only if you enjoy the book. This text describes techniques for improving mental abilities. Some of the things it can help you to achieve include the following:
Depending on circumstances, use different lifestyles that improve one or another mental function.
Experience euphoria without drugs and come up with new ideas, when needed.
Slow down and prevent yourself from making rash, impulsive decisions, when necessary.
Sharpen your wit, become more talkative, and entertain people.
When necessary, lower your mood and increase emotional tension, which can help reduce procrastination.
Increase your score on intelligence or general aptitude tests.
Concentrate on reading and writing for many hours daily.
Increase your grade point average if you are a student or improve your job productivity if you are a knowledge worker.
Get along with people and live without arguments and conflicts.
The proposed methods are brief cooling or heating of the body (water therapy) and three different "smart diets," each suitable for a different type of task. The text also describes a "depressant diet," which is not a smart diet but can improve self-control and sleep. The strict diets do not have to be used on a permanent basis and the conventional food pyramid is recommended most of the time. Several useful social skills and studying/writing techniques are also discussed as well as the role of luck in personal achievement. Most authors in this field will tell you that you should read more books, solve mental puzzles, buy their nutritional supplements, sleep well, exercise, etc., in order to get smarter. In contrast, this book is proposing moderately cold hydrotherapy and a smart diet (which involves avoiding all dietary supplements). To give another example, most books on anger management say that you should try to change your thinking in order to overcome anger, while this book suggests hot hydrotherapy and the exclusion of certain foods from your diet. The main focus of discussion in this text is on changing the biological workings of the brain, not on pop psychology. Particularly, the book describes various combinations of diets and hydrotherapy that have the following effects: sedative/sleep-promoting, stimulant/wakefulness-promoting, attention-enhancing, antianxiety, antidepressant, mood-stabilizing (mood-lowering), and euphoriant. Additionally, existing scientific evidence of pain-reducing, fever-reducing, anti-fatigue, immunostimulatory, antinausea, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory effects of hydrotherapy is also presented. The possible side effects of the diets and hydrotherapy are discussed as well.Despite its technical content, the book is written in an accessible language and has an informative summary for each chapter and a list of key points at the end of each section. Most of the claims in the bulleted list above are supported by a theory and the author's personal experience (a healthy subject). About a half of these claims are directly supported by previously published scientific studies, including the claim about intelligence tests. The author's academic transcripts and test scores have been documented and can be verified independently.

Learning Python: Powerful Object-Oriented Programming ReviewThis book will teach you Python if you have a lot of patience and are willing to wade through many pages of text to get information. The author wastes a lot of ink stating things like "I'll introduce you to topic XYZ, but you will have to wait until a later chapter to go into detail." Or introducing a topic and then declaring it is outside the books (1216 page) scope. Here's an example from page 85:
"Text pattern matching is an advanced tool outside this book's scope, but readers with backgrounds in other scripting languages may be interested to know that to do pattern matching in Python, we import a module called re."
Pattern matching is a critical feature of any scripting language. I was surprised to see such an important topic thrown away.
The book is divided into sections. I've put page counts and a summary description of the content to further describe the glacial pace of the book:
Part 1: Getting Stared: Pages 1- 72
72 pages to tell you how to run a Python program.
Part 2: Types and Operations 73-258
186 pages to introduce Python types (strings, numbers, sequences, etc)
Page 3: Statements and Syntax - 259-392
If statements are not introduced until Part3.
At this point I gave up and started reading the online tutorial.Learning Python: Powerful Object-Oriented Programming Overview

Franklin AnyBook Reader - 60 Hour Edition (DRP-4000) ReviewFinally! ... a reader that is not limited to buying those special reading systems and the accessories for them. This is like the reading pens, but you can use the books you already have or would rather have for your children AND you record your own voice into it. So, you can personalize the story using your kids' names or by using your own character voices. It comes with sheets of removable stickers that are used to identify your recording. For example, you adhere a sticker on each page of your book. Then, you turn the reader on, touch the sticker with the reader to activate the sticker and then you record your voice reading the page. It also comes with an assortment of pre-recorded stickers with sounds on them (animals, phone ringing, clapping, etc.) to add to the story. My kids have fun with it. You can get creative with it, too. I can totally see myself eventually using this for their school items, crafts, albums, etc.Franklin AnyBook Reader - 60 Hour Edition (DRP-4000) OverviewDRP 4000 AnyBook Reader is a reading enhancement and reinforcement tool enabling language and reading enjoyment and improvement. LeapFrog® Tag Reading System (16 MB) ReviewThere was an article about this toy before it came out in Wired Magazine. It basically interviewed the inventor and peaked my curiosity. So I purchased it. It is an impressive device by any modern day standards. Basically it's a camera that recognizes words and images on specialized paper (the limited series of books that you purchase). Once recognized it plays sound bites or reads the word(s) on the page that you are passing the pen over. It's smartly designed and a child quickly understands how to operate it.
At first it's a game and your child will just want to click on everything to hear the sound bites. As time goes by they start exploring the less than obvious features like read back and games. Before you know it you have a totally transfixed kid. It's great for a long drive and it certainly beats the pants off a dvd. I do believe that this device is positively contributing to my child's learning. I will say that the books vary in quality. I am writing reviews on most of them ; ) so you can follow along if you wish. To start with get Sponge Bob as it is the best of the bunch followed by Kung Fu Panda or Cars.
Last thought if you're still with me. This is a wonderful invention. I do recommend it especially for parent's that are looking for an alternative to TV. I just wish to caution that it is not a substitute for quality reading time with your child so make sure to read to them as well. Overall a great investment.
I hope this review helps.LeapFrog® Tag Reading System (16 MB) OverviewIntroducing Tag Reading System, the revolutionary touch reading system that brings reading to life like never before.
