Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache in 24 Hours ReviewI have been a mainframe programmer for 13 years and have done web design for the past year. The following is my experience with this book.
First the good news:

1. I was able to successfully install PHP, Apache & MySQL.
2. I was able to successfully complete all the projects in the book.
3. I published one of my projects on a website.
Now the bad news:
1. There were critical typos in the book--not just captions under the wrong pictures but incorrect code. I spent many hours debugging the PHP code for the projects. The code errors I found were not in the errata on the SAMS website OR on thickbook.com. I sent one code correction to the editors and received an acknowledgement, but I just checked and the code typo is not included in the errata. There are code errors on pp. 245, 406, 417. E-mail me if you are also having problems with the code on those pages as the SAMS people do not seem to be concerned or aware of these errors.
2. The installation of the products did not go as smoothly as I hoped either. The instructions on what to download did not match how the websites now look. There was some missing information. I was able to get it all working only with a lot of trial and error.
This book contained projects that I was interested in learning: address book, storefront, shopping cart. Build Your Own ASP.NET Website Using C# & VB.NET ReviewThis is the first Sitepoint book I have read and the second on ASP.NET.
The book requires that you have either Windows 2000, XP or 2003 installed and requires .NET Framework Redistributable (1.1 is the version the book is written for but most examples should work in v1.0), .NET Framework SDK, IIS (Or Cassini) Web Server, a modern web browser (e.g. IE v5.5+) and an editor. (Anything from notepad to Visual Studio will be sufficient). Access (JET), MSDE and SQL Server are the databases used in the examples. Instructions are included in the book on how to install and configure IIS and how to install MSDE and Access and how to attach the example database.
No previous knowledge of ASP.NET, C#, VB.NET, IIS nor databases is required. However you will need to be familiar with HTML before reading the book.
The format of each chapter is a brief, single paragraph introduction, then straight into the subject matter with a brief summary at the end. Throughout the chapters there is a liberal sprinkling of figures and tables and extensive code examples, nearly all of which are in both C# and VB.NET. During the course of the book a complete intranet application is developed which includes a helpdesk, employee store, newsletter archive, employee directory, address book and admin tools.
Pros
Extensive code samples
A complete intranet application is developed within the book.
Superb range of subject matter.
Liberal use of figures and tables.
Excellent layout.
A good tool for learning both C# & VB.NET.
Cons
Topics covered in each chapter are not listed at the beginning of each chapter.
If you are just a VB.NET or C# programmer the duplication of code examples in both VB.NET & C# may prove to be annoying and a waste of space.
Conclusion
My own opinion is that this is not the book for a casual hobbyist but aimed more towards at least a semi-professional developer. You will get more than a basic grounding in ASP.NET but will have to put in a fair bit of effort to extract everything the book has to offer. But what a lot it has to offer. The range of material covered is excellent. Of the many highlights the chapters on Datagrids & DataLists and Datasets were particularly impressive. The author's enthusiasm for ASP.NET shines throughout the book and his narrative style kept many of the duller topics interesting. The pace of the book is never pedestrian and sometimes quite frantic but always leaving you wanting even more.
At the end of the book you should feel confident to develop your own ASP.NET web sites in either C# or VB.NET. This book is another welcome addition to my bookshelf.Build Your Own ASP.NET Website Using C# & VB.NET Overview
A tutorial style book for absolute beginners that walks readers through an introduction to databases and programming concepts and then shows them how to build practical applications using Microsoft's technology.

Build Your Own ASP.NET Website Using C# & VB.NET guides readers through obtaining, installing and configuring all the necessary software to develop dynamic Websites. Then, it takes readers step-by-step through the process of creating full-blown, practical applications including an intranet, shopping cart with Paypal credit card processing and more. Throughout, the book focuses on best-practice code, ensuring application security and creating professional error handling routines.

Unlike most beginner books, SitePoint allow readers to choose between two programming languages, VB.NET or c#, when creating any of the applications in the book.

JavaScript and Ajax for the Web, Sixth Edition ReviewThe audience for this book is beginning/novice web developers with a knowledge of HTML but not of JavaScript. The book begins with an introduction to basic JavaScript language features and then proceeds to work through a number of examples according to category (images, frames, browser windows, forms, regular expressions and strings, user events, and cookies). After, there are two chapters on AJAX fundamentals.
The book does not claim to be an in-depth resource. The general purpose of the QuickStart series of books is to provide an overview of the main concepts and practices in use by web developers today. It is meant to be a STARTING POINT to introduce novices to technologies, not as an in-depth reference. The authors of this and other QuickStart books point this out continually, yet still get bad reviews from people who have not taken the time to read about the purposes of various series from technical publishers. This is unfortunate for the public as well as unfair to the authors.
A previous reviewer mentioned what he took to be atrocious coverage of Ajax. The book contains two chapters exclusively covering Ajax. The first covers the fundamental techniques used to take advantage of this combination of technologies. The second chapter explores some of the popular Ajax toolkits currently available. This is consistent with the purpose of the book. Some readers may be interested in heading down the development path, yet others may be more interested in design and in using pre-existing tools. This book caters to both and has no intention of deceiving either reader.
The following quote is a good example of this. It is an excerpt from the title page of Chapter 16, which follows the introductory chapter (basic XMLHttpRequest usage, etc.) and precedes the Ajax toolkit chapter:
"[Writing] Ajax applications can be difficult. They often require a great deal of knowledge of working with the DOM, CSS, JavaScript, and server resources. Since this is a book for beginning scripters, we've shown you how to do some easy things with Ajax, so you can see that learning Ajax techniques is well within your reach. But many books have been written that are completely devoted to showing intermediate-to-advanced scripters how to create Ajax applications, and our Ajax chapters are no substitute for that kind of in-depth exploration."
As for the dual-column formatting that some reviewers disliked, it is consistent with the formatting of the entire QuickStart series, as well as the QuickPro series of the same publisher. The format is nice for tackling specific techniques in a concise amount of space. It is not as abstractly engaging as conventional technical books, but it is not meant to be. The format is excellent for explaining techniques (especial design techniques) as well as for conveying a sense of quick forward momentum.
I've only recently started reading books from Peachpit Press. I like these books because they get me up to speed quickly, and act as a comprehensive starting point, allowing me to understand "where I need to go from here."
This book is excellent as a broad introduction with lots of real-world examples. If you're a novice web developer with a decent grasp of HTML wishing for a comprehensive introduction to JavaScript and practical JavaScript techniques, this is the book for you.
However, if you're well-grounded and are looking for more in-depth coverage of JavaScript and Ajax techniques, "Professional JavaScript for Web Developers" (Nicholas Zakas / Wrox Press) and "Professional Ajax" (Zakas, et. al. / Wrox Press) are excellent in-depth resources geared toward real-world professional development, and both are among the best peer-reviewed titles in existence on these subjects.JavaScript and Ajax for the Web, Sixth Edition OverviewNeed to learn JavaScript fast? Professional IIS 7 ReviewPeople often ask me how I like Vista and whether I think it's better than Windows XP or not. My standard reply is that I would have switched to Windows Vista for IIS 7 alone (I also do like many other Vista features, and thus prefer Vista over XP but that's beside the point here). In my opinion, IIS 7 is in many respects a lot better than its predecessor IIS 6 which runs on Windows XP and Server 2003. Besides the many new features that IIS 7 brings, it has one big advantage over the version running on Windows XP: it allows you to create multiple web sites that can run at the same time. No more messing around with tools like IIS Admin Pro although it was extremely useful in working around the limitations of IIS on Windows XP.
But with a new release of a complex piece of software as IIS is also comes the need for more knowledge and background information of the product. This is where the Wrox book Professional IIS 7 written by Kenneth Schaefer et al proved to be very useful.
The book is primarily aimed at administrators who manage Windows server running IIS 7. However, I'd also recommend the book to developers as they'll get a firm grasp of what goes on in the web server they're developing against. As an administrator, it's useful if you can read (or better yet, write) programming code as the book contains many code examples that show you how to create, edit and manage your IIS web sites (and more) through code and command line tools. As a developer, be prepared to learn a lot about how IIS works, and how to operate it, but don't expect too much in the field of actually developing web sites that will eventually run on IIS.
The book contains 20 chapters and is split over four parts. The first four chapters deal with topics like the history of IIS and compare the way the various flavors of IIS have worked in the past and how IIS 7 works now. You'll also learn more about the IIS architecture, with important sections on application pools, worker processes and the new "integrated pipeline mode" that allows you to deeply integrate your own managed .NET code into IIS. The chapter on planning is useful in helping you to determine requirements for things like software, hardware, network, and firewalls.
The installation process of IIS 7 is pretty straightforward and you'll probably be able to install IIS 7 yourself without a lot of instructions. However, if you've never installed IIS 7 before you may appreciate the large number of screenshots from the installation process in chapter 4. To me, the added value of that chapter was in the second half of the chapter where you learn how to create IIS sites, application pools, users and how to set permissions using command line tools and .NET code. Useful as that section was, I am not sure I understand what it did there as large parts of chapter 5 and 6 are dedicated to programmatically creating IIS objects. The chapter on installation closes off with some very useful tips on shared configuration which comes in handy if you're responsible for setting up or managing web farms.
The second section of the book contains a number of chapters that deal with web site administration. You'll learn how to create new sites, application pools and many other necessary IIS objects, both through the user interface and through .NET code and command line tools like appcmd.exe. You'll also see how to use the new configuration file system that allows you to manage your IIS sites using simple XML based config files. This is also one of my favorite new IIS features as it allows you to copy IIS settings (site settings, users, permissions and more) from your development machine to a production server (or from a backup file to a restored web site for example, no more messing with metabase backups). Being a developer, I liked this section a lot. I was able to quickly create a .NET application that allows me to create brand new and consistently configured web sites on my Windows Vista machine with the press of a button; something that comes in handy with the many Dynamicweb CMS web sites I run locally. I also found the chapter on the FTP Server quite useful. Since the out-of-the-box version of the FTP Server requires a fixed naming and directory structure it's good to see all the strict requirements clearly listed. Also, the new FTP Server that can be downloaded from www.iis.net is discussed in detail. The only thing I wish the book had included was a walkthrough of setting up a separate FTP site with a number of users accessing specific parts of the server. For example, you may want to have an FTP server unrelated to any of your web sites, (like [...]) and then grant yourself full control to the Inetpub folder, while providing access to one or more other folders for other users, preferably using non-domain accounts. While such a setup is possible and reasonable (and often extremely easy to do with commercial FTP servers), the book won't really help you figure out how to do it.
Chapter 11 and 12 show you how to extend the web server by writing your own modules using both managed and unmanaged code. If you're wanting to write integrated modules for IIS using all of its new features, this will definitely whet your appetite, although you'll need to look for dedicated books on the subject to get a better understanding of the whole subject.
The book also contains a number of chapters on security, covering both the security of your server as your own applications using the various authentication mechanisms (Windows, basic, forms and so on) and SSL. Whether you're new to IIS 7 or not, be sure to take a good look at these chapters to get a solid understanding of security in IIS. The last part of the book contains a few remaining subjects, including load balancing web farms, programmatic configuration and management and two chapters on monitoring, performance tuning, diagnostics and trouble shooting.
Overall, Professional IIS 7 is a very solid book on administrating IIS 7. Ken Schaefer and the other authors have done a great job in bringing a lot of knowledge on IIS together in one book. The book is generally concise, contains few errors and contains a lot of useful information, examples and code snippets to help you better install, manage and use your new IIS 7. I'd give the book 4.5 out of 5 stars.Professional IIS 7 OverviewAs the first update to Microsoft's server operating system in nearly five years, Windows Server 2008 boasts the new Internet Information Services 7.0 (IIS 7), which is the largest departure from previous versions of IIS ever. With a clear understanding of IIS 7, you'll learn to deploy, install, monitor, manage, and secure an IIS environment with confidence and ease.

PHP and MySQL Web Development ReviewThis is such a good book that I wanted to take the time to write a review and give it 5 stars, which it richly deserves. The other glowing reviews helped me to choose this book over others, and they were right on the money.
I'm an experienced C/C++ programmer on Windows, but I knew nothing about PHP and MySQL -- and very little about Apache and Unix -- prior to opening this book. I've now read about 80% of it and, in the process, I've built a commercial-grade Website with user registration and shopping cart facilities, which was my objective. Reading this book was a very efficient use of my time -- it gave me exactly what I needed to build a practical Web application system with PHP and MySQL, and very little extraneous stuff.
The main prerequisite for this book is a working knowledge of HTML, and just a little background in procedural programming. Some of the earliest examples use HTML tags for tables and forms, with PHP use thoroughly explained, but without many notes on the HTML. A beginning programmer can learn effectively from this book, but as an experienced programmer I felt that it also worked well to bring me up to speed quickly on a new language.
Another value of this book not mentioned in other reviews are the many good recommendations for organizing your PHP code (applying basic software engineering principles) as your Web application gets larger and more complex. Many, many Websites have been built haphazardly and are now difficult to maintain because they haven't followed the excellent advice in this book.
I did notice the typos mentioned by other reviewers, but after reading 80% of this (867-page) book I feel they are very minor and really do not detract from the book significantly at all.
All in all, this is one of those rare books that is probably worth ten times the amount that you pay for it, and much more if you use it effectively.PHP and MySQL Web Development OverviewPHP & MySQL Web Development teaches the reader to develop dynamic, secure e-commerce Web sites and Web applications. The book shows how to integrate and implement these technologies by following real-world examples and working sample projects. It also covers the related technologies needed to build a commercial Web site such as SSL, shopping carts, and payment systems. The CD includes a Linux distribution, MySQL, PHP4 and utilities for the projects and code listings.

Real World ASP.NET: Building a Content Management System ReviewFirst off, the source code that accompanies the book is very useful (I use it to run an intranet) and it can be extended to display the content in a manner very different than the original author envisioned.
That said, I think this book could be used as a classic example of how not to write extensible, maintainable code. Rather than demonstrate the power and ease of ASP.Net using datagrids and user controls, the content lists are constructed using loops and tables, and the form to edit content is repeated no fewer than 3 times. In order to filter the content before displaying it to the user we run a test on every row to determine if it meets the criteria rather than using a DataView and a filter. I am currently converting the code to a cleaner implementation and I find I am deleting an average of 2 pages of code per page, with no loss of functionality.
When talking about content management I would have expected some sort of elegant promotion system, instead we are offered a custom page complete with custom code for each promotion, in spite of the fact that the only thing that changes between pages is who is allowed to perform the promotion and which state it is being promoted from/to.
This book will not teach you to create flexible software that can be easily adapted to changing requirements. It will teach you to create brittle software that requires an inordinate amount of effort to make the simplest changes (replacing the editor textbox with a WYSIWYG control shouldn't require modifying 3 separate pages -- and I have the code to prove it).Real World ASP.NET: Building a Content Management System Overview

Struts 2 Design and Programming: A Tutorial (A Tutorial series) ReviewI'm convinced this is and will remain the authoritative book on Struts 2. I know that more are being written but I don't care. You will not find one better.
I've never worked with Struts 2 in the past yet I was able to get a pretty solid understanding of it in a very short amount of time. Granted, I've had plenty of experience with the original Struts, JSF, and other web technologies, but I think even a beginner could pick this up fairly easily.
I let a friend of mine who had used Struts 2 on a project before skim through my copy of Struts 2 Design and Programming to check for any gaping holes or errant information before writing this review. It passed his inspection. (Thanks, Eric!)
I initially was a little skeptical when I saw that this Struts 2 book includes many other topics like DAOs, Velocity, FreeMarker, Dojo, and JFreeChart. These sections actually turned out quite pleasant to read and were great introductions to those topics without taking anything away from the main topic: Struts 2.
When you start making your way into chapters 5 and 6, feel free to jump around to other chapters. Chapters 5 and 6 cover the many tags in Struts 2 and, even with the author's great explanations and examples, can become a little tiresome for a cover-to-cover kind of read (but makes for a terrific reference). I suggest coming back to these chapters every once in a while to chew off two or three of the tags at a time. I expect this tip will add to your reading enjoyment.
Overall, this is a terrific book and I highly recommend it to anyone working with or curious about Struts 2.Struts 2 Design and Programming: A Tutorial (A Tutorial series) OverviewOffering both theoretical explanations and real-world applications, this in-depth guide covers the 2.0 version of Struts, revealing how to design, build, and improve Java-based Web applications within the Struts development framework. High Performance Web Sites: Essential Knowledge for Front-End Engineers Review§
_High Performance Web Sites_ is one of those books that will get read by more people than buy it because it is both a fast read and organized into clearly differentiated subjects. This makes it easy to pick up for a moment or pass along to team members with different specialties.
Each of these "14 Steps to Faster-Loading Web Sites" (listed in the editorial review above) is itself divided into related tips with practical pointers. The fact that the book is full of these pointers is not the only value I extracted. We also get something a bit more subtle. The fact that the author is a performance expert at one of the mega-companies that define the Web for most of us lends authority to the book. It is easy to have confidence that his practical experience will have immediate lessons for teams with the same problems, if on a smaller scale.
Steve Souders provides a special addition to his tips: his example pages offer direct comparisons and means to make our own tests. This is something rarely encountered in such books. The book ends with a 30-page chapter where he deconstructs 10 of the top Web sites in the U.S. using the rules and tools described in the book.

When Eric wrote the first edition of this book way back at the turn of the millenium, he proposed to "explain CSS in all its warts and glory." For CSS enthusiasts at the time, that was an advance -- every other author and Web lecturer fixated on the warts!
Six years have changed a lot. CSS, as a tool of modern Web professionals, has moved way beyond its former role as window-dressing for HTML. HTML (and XML) work in partnership with CSS to produce the most logical and yet most flexible page structure that defines current Web document standards.
The book has just about all you need as both a reference and basic how-to. Eric concentrates on the CSS properties and techniques that have real support among browsers. This increases the practical value of the book. Discussion of CSS selectors has been expanded to reflect the growing support for more powerful (and complex!) selector syntax. Most pages have multiple illustrations to clarify text. The book has updated information related to Firefox and IE7.
One disappointment was the sparse coverage of print media styles. Admittedly, browser support of print styling is itself disappointing but a lot of printing is done from the browser and there are still lots of things we can do, as Eric shows in some of his other writings.
Eric's ongoing experience with key real-life Web issues and design knowledge binds the material together and makes this a superior book.

Mastering Regular Expressions ReviewJeffrey Friedl's "Matering Regular Expressions" does a facinating job in taking you through the jungle (and I mean jungle) of RegExp.
I am a Perl/CGI programmer, and I had considered myself good at RegExp even before I read this book. Most of the things I knew were from Programming Perl, 3rd edition (chapter 5, Pattern Matching). But I still decided to give Jeffrey a chance since I was having some trouble with my Parse::Syntax module, which is designed to parsing *any* programming language and highlighting the syntax accordingly (provided it has a syntax/grammer file written for the specific language). The accuracy of the parser (and more importantly the speed) does depend on well crafted regular expressions.
As I started reading the book, I couldn't stop. I took it to my school's cafeteria with me and no one could make me leave untill I finished the whole book. I was excited. I was pleased! Here is the outline of tha chapters:
Chapter 1 and 2 introduce you to regular expressions and give some basic regex examples. Mail utility and date matching is two of them.
Chapter 3 mostly talks about conventions that all the regex tools follow and their differences.
Chapter 4 deals with Traditional NFA, POSIX NFA and DFA regex engines and their pros and cons. What you'll like the most is the details provided by the author on each and every single example. He also uses a lot of step-by-step illustrations to take you deeper into the regex engine itself and see/feel how it works. He shows the point of backtrackings and provides awesome benchmarks. He uses such examples of matching a quote, allowing escaped quotes inside the pattern, matching C-style comments, IP addresses and many more.
Chapter 5 deals with writing efficient regular expressions for NFA engines. It also re-vists some of the examples provided in the previous chapter and fine-tunes them.
Chapter 6 and 7 deals with Tool-Language specific features of Regex engines. Chapter 6 is dedicated to Awk, Tcl and GNU Emacs, whereas chapter 7 is entirely dedicated to Perl, good over 100 pages of Perlism.
It's true that there're features that Perl 5.6 offers when it comes to regex that didn't exist at the time this book went to press, (lookbehinds, for example). But this no way makes this book dated. Just take my word for it. Jeffrey put together a great masterpiece that will not die for many years, no matter how fast the technology tends to enhance

Dreamweaver CS5: The Missing Manual ReviewI did not buy this book through amazon, although i wish I would have with the markdown in price. It is a great deal compared to the $49 I paid (8-26-10) at B&N. Early on, I was in need of a great, solid, easy to read book that would introduce me into the Dreamweaver world. Being an amateur and having little to no knowledge at all of CSS, HTML, XML, etc., I found this book a great, GREAT tool to help me get on my way to website building and managing. Though in reality, it teaches you a lot more than just those simple desires. The Missing Manual comes in with the expectation that you are an advanced beginner or intermediate at operating a computer and you DO NOT need to have any prior knowledge of computer coding or tech terms to understand the material. It teaches you as you go along without veering from the objective of that chapter.
It is really fascinating how the material covered in the book is so clearly explained with examples and links that supplement the content in the chapter. In fact the book includes many external website links and books to view so that the reader can learn about that feature or code structure in more detail that the chapter will allow. That is not to say the chapters are limited- by all means no! There are books dedicated just to CSS and HTML5 coding- more info than the typical reader would like to know. And so this whole book goes about teaching you the essentials (and there are a lot of them) rather than include every little nuance to code language and bore you to death (if you haven't already died before reaching the end of the book). That's right, this book has 10,031 pages of information and lessons (not including creds & appendix). I absolutely LOVED the fact that the book was formatted so that each page had 3cm margins along the edges!!!!! I write notes in the sides, star important paragraphs and recap half-chapters in these margins. Much less of an eyesore than some other books where you have to cram in between lines to write snippets about things.
I previously bought (and returned) the Dummies version *Dreamweaver CS5 All-in-One For Dummies of dreamweaver CS5 on account that I.COULD.NOT.READ.IT. IT is simply not a very well written book for beginners and intermediates of Dreamweaver/site building. It was difficult to read, and in their intro they said 'this is not a step by step book, so feel free to jump from one chapter to another in any order.' Well how exactly does that help? If you don't know what you're using, how could you expect the reader to chose one chapter from another at random? Didn't quite like that. Anyways, I really like the organization and teach-as-we-go approach that The Missing Manual offers. This is literaly, "The missing manual that should have been in the box." Add Spry Tabbed Panels to Web Pages Some website visitors are loath to scroll; if they don't see what they want when a page first loads, they move on. Because of this, some web designers divide long passages of information into multiple pages so that each page presents small, easy-to-digest chunks. Of course, that means building several pages instead of just one, and forces visitors to click through (and wait for) a series of pages. Spry Tabbed Panels provides an alternative (see Figure 13-1). Instead of creating one long page, or several smaller pages, you can organize information into separate tabbed panels. That way, your content is always front and center, and your visitors can easily access different sections by clicking a tab above each panel. Adding a Tabbed Panel You can place Spry tabbed panels anywhere on a web page. But since the tabs form a single row at the top of the group of panels, you need enough horizontal space to accommodate all the tabs. Unless you have only a couple of tabs with one-word text labels, you should place the tabbed panels in a fairly wide space, such as the main column of a web page, or across the entire width of the page. Just follow these steps: 1. In the document window, click where you wish to insert the panels.For example, inside a div tag.2. HTML5: Designing Rich Internet Applications (Visualizing the Web) ReviewPlain and simple, this book provides the basics to get started with HTML5 and CSS3 in a proper format. Coming from a 10yr. veteran of HTML4 and XHTML, I found the book to be well suited for beginners and us experts alike. You need books like this to help leverage the very fundamentals that are often overshot by the rest of your community. How many times have you gone back to see proper usage for your tags or attributes? I like good clean books like this to keep me grounded. Personally I own a good collection of books by Matthew David as his writing style is point blank.
to Brooklynite: Maybe you should get more in touch with your fellow developers and designers. Lorem Ipsum is standard practice for templating and concepting. If you didn't grasp that this book isn't a "tutorialfest" for copy and paste code, maybe you should look elsewhere instead of leaving a one star review. There are a few misprints and some code mishaps, but nothing that you couldn't intelligently work around.

JavaScript: The Definitive Guide ReviewThe previous edition of this book, 4th edition, remained at arm's length at all times at work and rescued me repeatedly from various day-to-day JavaScript challenges. It has become tattered from rigorous use. I always loved how the book was organized, with the first half as a walk through the entire gamut of JavaScript's workings -- tutorials, walk-thrus, code samples, cross-browser issues, and practical solutions -- and the second half of the book as a complete JavaScript language and DOM reference. That already very useful format has actually been improved upon. David has combined the DOM API reference and client-side JavaScript reference into a single alphabetized section. Now that I think about it, I did find myself flipping back and forth a lot in the previous edition, so this is a welcome improvement. Each object, property, and method contains a helpful "availability" of that item. This may be the standards spec it came from [DOM Level 2 HTML, ECMAScript v1], the JavaScript version in which it emerged [JavaScript 1.0], or a list of browser versions, if it is a proprietary feature. This is critical info to have at-a-glance - could perhaps save you 2 days of work implementing a non-standard, IE-specific JavaScript feature, when you could have been coding the standards-compliant equivalent. David has removed a lot of the deprecated, not-widely-adopted DOM interfaces that no longer apply to modern browsers. David has also moved focus away from some of the more oddball DOM interfaces that have been replaced by more sensible JavaScript objects that implement those interfaces, for example, window.getComputedStyle() rather than AbstractView.getComputedStyle(). In other words, David has removed all of the "stuff that still exists, but you no longer need to worry about". This makes for a more focused, less cluttered, "on topic", useful tome. I don't need to know about the 10 different methods that browser manufacturers fought over 7 years ago. Tell me what I need to know NOW to write practical, functioning, modern, cross-browser JavaScript. That's exactly what Mr. Flanagan has accomplished.
What else is new in the 5th edition?
1. Nested functions and closures.
2. A dedicated "Classes, Constructors, and Prototypes" chapter, with much more coverage on object-oriented programming in JavaScript.
3. A new chapter on Modules and Namespaces.
4. New chapter on scripting Java with JavaScript.
5. Coverage of the legacy (Level 0) DOM has been combined with the W3C standard DOM. More consolidation. Less flipping back and forth.
6. Cookies and Client-Side Persistence. Updated coverage on cookies, and brand new coverage of other client-side persistence techniques, like IE userData persistence, and Flash Shared Object Persistence.
7. AJAX - Coverage of scripted HTTP calls using the now famous XMLHttpRequest object.
8. XML - Demonstrates how to create, load, transform, query, serialize, and extract info from XML docs.
9. Client-Side Graphics - JavaScript's graphics capabilities. The cutting edge tag, SVG, VML, and communicating with the Flash plug-in.
10. Scripting Java Apps and Flash Movies - Another brand new chapter.
So, is the 5th edition worth the purchase? Absolutely. This book is a must-have for any web development library. I turn to it repeatedly. Here's an example.
Last week, I overheard a developer on my team proclaim to someone, "We can't do that. JavaScript can't control stuff in another frame." They went and informed my boss how monumental their task was becoming as they proposed a hacky, inelegant server-side workaround.
I managed to grab the one developer and said, "JavaScript certainly can talk across frames."
"Really?!", he asked, astonished. I opened "The Definitive Guide" to the part on cross-frame scripting and bookmarked it for them.
"Oh, wow! GREAT!", he exclaimed, "That completely solves our problem. Totally cool!" and zipped away book in hand. Hours later, they had it worked out, rather than days with the server-side solution.
I've seen some one-star, complaint-type reviews posted that this isn't a beginner book. Exactly right, but I'm confused as to how a quality rating [of 1 to 5 stars] equates, in any way, to skill level of the book, or its ability to meet someone's self-conceived personal notions of what the book is supposed to contain. There are some overview-type chapters that go over syntax, operators, scope, expressions, and the usual array of language basics, but these reviewers are correct in that this book is not a beginner's tutorial on JavaScript. It is a meat and potatoes, soup to nuts definitive guide and reference on all of the important and practical aspects of JavaScript programming. It is not a cookbook of cute-but-useless cut-n-paste recipes [although there are plenty of USEFUL code examples]. It is not the quick-and-dirty example of how to slap the hottest AJAX library into your site to attempt to make it behave like a Windows app. The chapter on AJAX shows you how to use the XML HTTP object directly, wrapped up in some nice reusable routines, so you can WRITE YOUR OWN AJAX-based features [which I prefer over using someone else's complicated, obfuscated framework].
Great job, again, David! If you develop websites in any capacity, you need this book. It should be on every developer's shelf.

Beginning ASP.NET E-Commerce in C#:: From Novice to Professional (Expert's Voice in .NET) ReviewAmong the many ASP.NET books out now, very few actually go through and help readers how to create large-scale web applications. There are plenty of reference books available explaining how to use the many ASP.NET controls and c# langauge techniques showing you snippets of code but thats about it. In the job market today, people need to understand how to put together (from start to finish) a usable web application that can be used in the "real-world".
This book (as its previous ASP.NET 2.0 version) explains to its readers how to create from scratch a web application using techniques that you would see in a real-world application.
Of course it is a limited database, but it is something that you can build upon and use many of the techniques in other similar web applications.
The book first starts in explaining the database structure (The Balloon Shop) and hoow 3-tier architecture works in a web application today. The presentaion tier, the business tier and the data tier. All these "tiers" are just objects that you create in ASP.NET and C#. The presentation tier would be your web forms (controls and such), your business tier would be all the code (defined in classes) that will interact with the presentation tier and the data tier will be your database and any remaining functions. This is the real web applications work and the author explains it very well.
VS 2008 and SQL Server 2008 Express is used so you dont have to spend any money on other tools (free from Microsoft) and the author goes through all the database tables while explaing database basics such as tables, keys, SQL statements and stored procedures. A very nice database intro.
The author then goes into detail explaining all the classes (explaining how to create classes and why they are useful) that will be used in the application.
Other real-world issues in developing web applications are discussed like performance, error handling, error pages, administrations issues, interacting with 3rd party components, etc.
After you read this book, you should be well versed in developing a pretty sophisticated ASP.NET 3.5 web application.

have to hand-carve the HTML, JavaScript, CSS and PHP. Dojo saves you at least
