Envisioning Information ReviewTo me, this is Tufte's best book, although they are all really good. Although its visually gorgeous, its not a coffee table book to just flip through. You have to be willing to spend time with it, and if you do the rewards are tremendous.
Tufte presents a collection of some the best examples of information design ever invented, and some of the worst examples. And then he goes into the underlying principles that make the great ones sing out.
This book will be really helpful to any web page designer, UI designers, statisticians, cartographers, scientists, or anyone concerned with presenting dense information in a clear way.
There is a chapter on presenting multiple dimensional data on a flat, 2D paper that all by itself is worth the price of the book. Then there's the chapter on "Small Multiples" which presents wonderful examples of how to show patterns and changes. But then there's the chapter on layering of information, so the key pieces of data appear first, and the less relevant ones reveal themselves later. And on and on and on. Its just a great book.
To add to it, Tufte is obsessed with quality like nobody else I can think of in the book business. Its printed on 100% rag paper using real lead type because he thinks that all other methods are inferior. Which means the book is costly to make, but its of heirloom quality.Envisioning Information Overview

Numerical Methods of Statistics (Cambridge Series in Statistical and Probabilistic Mathematics) ReviewFor those who wants to understand what programns like spss, statistica and minitab do. Its not trivial but for the midle level student its very usefull. All the examples are in fortram language what is bad for me... But in general Monahan writes in very clear way, special thing in this kind of book.Numerical Methods of Statistics (Cambridge Series in Statistical and Probabilistic Mathematics) OverviewThis book explains how computer software is designed to perform the tasks required for sophisticated statistical analysis. For statisticians, it examines the nitty-gritty computational problems behind statistical methods. For mathematicians and computer scientists, it looks at the application of mathematical tools to statistical problems. The first half of the book offers a basic background in numerical analysis that emphasizes issues important to statisticians. The next several chapters cover a broad array of statistical tools, such as maximum likelihood and nonlinear regression. The author also treats the application of numerical tools; numerical integration and random number generation are explained in a unified manner reflecting complementary views of Monte Carlo methods. The book concludes with an examination of sorting, FFT and the application of other "fast" algorithms to statistics. Each chapter contains exercises that range in difficulty as well as examples of the methods at work. Most of the examples are accompanied by demonstration code available from the author's home page.

HTML5: Designing Rich Internet Applications (Visualizing the Web) ReviewPlain and simple, this book provides the basics to get started with HTML5 and CSS3 in a proper format. Coming from a 10yr. veteran of HTML4 and XHTML, I found the book to be well suited for beginners and us experts alike. You need books like this to help leverage the very fundamentals that are often overshot by the rest of your community. How many times have you gone back to see proper usage for your tags or attributes? I like good clean books like this to keep me grounded. Personally I own a good collection of books by Matthew David as his writing style is point blank.
to Brooklynite: Maybe you should get more in touch with your fellow developers and designers. Lorem Ipsum is standard practice for templating and concepting. If you didn't grasp that this book isn't a "tutorialfest" for copy and paste code, maybe you should look elsewhere instead of leaving a one star review. There are a few misprints and some code mishaps, but nothing that you couldn't intelligently work around.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great introduction and place to start with HTML5 and CSS3. Also the updated site for reference and code is [...]HTML5: Designing Rich Internet Applications (Visualizing the Web) Overview

GDI+ Programming: Creating Custom Controls Using C# ReviewOne of my first .NET ah-hah experiences back in 2001 was creating an .aspx file that I could reference as a graphic (!). The .aspx file received two query parameters which informed it of the file name of the jpg and the width that the returned image was supposed to be. So then in an IMG tag, I would simply put src="ShowPicture.aspx?file=product1343.jpg&width=100" and it would display a thumbnail of that picture 100 pixels wide and proportionally high. This is an excellent way to produce dynamic pictures as well as protect your online photographs (show thumbnails to visitors, full sized pictures to members), and the .NET GDI+ classes are straight-forward and easy to use. Ever since then I have been looking for a book which goes into deeper detail of creating graphics in .NET with the GDI+ classes. Wrox has finally produced this book! In chapters 1 through 10 you get the basics: pens, brushes, texts, fonts, image manipulation, paths, regions and printing. Then in the rest of the book you learn how to make custom controls which create custom graphics (I love books that teach two things at a time -- great for developers who do four things at a time). If you read this book, you will think about graphics differently, namely, as dynamic objects which your application, the user and the environment can manipulate at run time. Very exciting.GDI+ Programming: Creating Custom Controls Using C# OverviewWhether you are using Windows Forms to build rich-clientbusiness applications or the ASP.NET framework to build powerful webapplications or web services, the use of well-designed graphics willgreatly enhance their usability, impact, and visual appeal. This bookprovides a comprehensive guide to the use of GDI+ in .NET applicationsand aims to provide developers with all the information they need tobuild effective custom controls. The opening section of the book investigates the .NET Frameworkclasses that implement GDI+. It covers all of the classes, methods andtechniques needed to create, manipulate, and display precise graphicsin a form, a page being sent to a printer or an image. On this foundation, the second section describes how to design andbuild effective custom controls for use in a businessenvironment. Topics covered include building composite controls, implementing keyboard navigation, and enhancing design-time support. The final section of the book explores the use of GDI+ and ASP.NET tobuild custom controls that can provide reusable, GUI components forweb projects and to deliver customized graphics over the Internet.
