Microsoft Visual Studio 2010: A Beginner's Guide ReviewOne may wonder how anyone could write a decent introductory book to Visual Studio and related programming, do it just over 400 pages with decent sized type and screenshots, and still cover a little bit of everything from Asp.Net to MVC to WPF. This book successfully manages that task quite well.
The first four chapters get you up to speed on finding your way around visual studio enough to get a project started. It also includes brief tutorial on programming in both Visual Basic and C#. If you have programmed in other languages, or you are just starting programming, this will give you just enough knowledge to get started inside Visual Studio.. It covers program structure, some language syntax, and how to best use the Visual Studio make programming tasks easier.
The next three chapters cover creating projects, debugging, and accessing data. While whole books can be written on these subjects, Joe manages to hit the useful high points. Since much time can be spend debugging, understanding the debugging tools is essential for developers new to Visual Studio. Many hours of debugging can be saved by using the built in tools. He explains breakpoints and the useful debugging windows, and give a great walkthrough of using these concepts to track down a bug in a program with bugs.
The next part covers web and windows applications using ASP.NET MVC, Silverlight, WPF, and web services.. Again, whole books are written on these subjects. This book works through just enough information to understand how to use each topic, and a sample program for each to illustrate the concept. I, knowing very little about MVC, built the example in the chapter, and found how easy it was to learn.
Finally, enhancing and extending Visual Studio 2010 is covered. Templates, snippets and macro are covered as well as project add-ins.
Overall, I found the book well written, organized, and easy to use. Topics are introduced in a logical order. It is best to read the first seven chapters, and then after that, the chapters you are interested in. If you are interested in web, you can skip the WPF chapter and vice versa. This book is a must have for the entry level developer with little or no experience with Visual Studio. If you are a career developer with little or no Visual Studio experience, this book is a great introduction.

CodeIgniter for Rapid PHP Application Development: Improve your PHP coding productivity with the free compact open-source MVC CodeIgniter framework ReviewCodeIgniter is the fastest PHP framework out there, and it works. There are very few bugs in the code. The other thing that CodeIgniter has that other frameworks don't is a good forum and excellent documentation. It has an outstanding Users Guide you can download which lists every function with a code example.
And now, there are two books out on CodeIgniter. I purchased both books, read this one from cover to cover, and am 1/3 of the way through the "Professional CodeIgniter" book, which is much slower going. I figure folks might want to know the difference before they buy.
"CodeIgniter for Rapid PHP..." is a detailed overview of CodeIgniter. First, I have to disagree with the previous reviewer. This book does not walk you through a complete application. There is part of an application in Chap 13 & 14, but that's it. This is an overview book. It is more verbose than the User's Guide, and arranges the topics in a different, perhaps, more understandable format. This is a reading book. You're not meant to sit at your computer, and input the code with this book. Instead the code is presented in a "how to do this" type of format, and now, let's move on to the next topic. There is not a consistent application throughout the book that glues all the chapters together. This could be a reference for CodeIgniter, except I wish it had a better Index. For example, there is no Model topic under M in the Index which lists only "Menu" under "M." In contrast, "Professional CodeIgniter" lists 24 subtopics under "Model" in its Index.
Having gone through the negatives, I still rate this book 4 stars, because it is very readable, and there is value to be gained from the read. It's an excellent detailed overview. There are pearls and tidbits that you pick up in the book that make it worthwhile. You get a good overall feel of CodeIgniter from the book. It's also nice to read a computer book without necessarily running to the computer every two pages. You don't need your computer to benefit from this book, unlike the "Professional CodeIgniter" book which you do need a computer, and is not as easily read which I'll review on its page.CodeIgniter for Rapid PHP Application Development: Improve your PHP coding productivity with the free compact open-source MVC CodeIgniter framework OverviewImprove your PHP coding productivity with this guide to the powerful and popular CodeIgniter framework. This book is for developers who are new to CodeIgniter. Basic skills in PHP and MySQL are required, but only rudimentary object-oriented knowledge is required. If you're looking for a better way to develop PHP applications, or want to find out more about the CodeIgniter framework as a viable option for one of your own projects, this book will help you.

Beginning CakePHP: From Novice to Professional (Expert's Voice in Web Development) ReviewThe book is overall well written, however the series title is misleading. I could have easily labeled this 3 stars.
PROS:
- Well written. (Few tech authors have this skill)
- Overall good cover of the basics
- Full code is provided, author has a forum where he answers some questions.
- He shows good code practices
CONS:
- This book should be in the series: "From Novice to having some understanding". It does not cover ACL at all, and the cover of the basic Auth component is incredibly basic and lacking. Most of the examples are very simple, so you won't be getting to be a "Professional" with this book. The tile is ok "Beginning CakePHP" but by no means expect this book to cover in depth topics of challenging issues.
- The book is one big project that keeps adding on things - which is good. But the author decided to go for a Blog... Please another application? Pretty please? There are about a million blog tutorials out there, he could have gone the extra mile by giving us an interesting (i.e realistic) project. There is already a good blog tutorial on the cakephp.org site. Yes, the author does take the blog further in this book (he better, it's 300 pages) but still.
- Not the author's fault - but be warned that the book is for RC1 - and believe me, you will struggle figuring out why the provided code is not working and why so many errors (if you are using RC2 or beyond).
- All the examples except 1 are straight out of the box CAKEPHP built in things - which is fine, but real projects usually require you to stretch things, change some models to be used differently.
- The "Advanced features" chapter is a joke. It spends less than 1 page in most of those advance features. Basically, you are on your own. And a whopping of 6 pages on the forms helper. (Web applications live on forms, a whole book could be written on the topic).
I gave it 4 stars for being a clearly written book on CakePHP, but don't expect this book will be more than an introduction, with a few nice gems.Beginning CakePHP: From Novice to Professional (Expert's Voice in Web Development) OverviewAll other attempts at translating CakePHP for new users are either too technical or lack enough information. This book is tailored for those new to Cake and who want a thorough tutorial. The biggest advantage for reading this book is that it really stands alone in the repertoire of CakePHP documentation, and little work is scheduled to become available anytime soon. It's to a PHP developer's advantage to try out Cake and to get a favorable introduction to the framework, which is precisely what this book provides.Beginning CakePHP is one of the first if not the first book in the market that leads the reader through extensive web application development in CakePHP, one of the leading popular growing open source Web frameworks. It gives a how-to approach to Cake rather than a dictionary-type reference, that culminates in an extensive practical blogging application example.

Expert Spring MVC and Web Flow (Expert's Voice in Java) ReviewOther reviews have mentioned that there are many problems with the examples in this book. I can only reaffirm what they've said.
The other thing that I really didn't like was the disorganized fashion with which the examples were presented. The authors seemed to jump around describing one small section of the problem in great detail, then 3-4 pages later would give you the critical piece of information you needed to understand their example 3 pages before. I am a fan of examples that are logically presented:
First you do x,
Then you do y,
you configure x to point to y
now deploy it, type this in the url field, and there you go, it works.
I found these examples to be more like:
First you do x,
then let me tell you everything there is to know about x.
y is very important as well.
if you wanted to set up y you could do it like this.
of another popular way of configuring y is like this.
and then there's this thing called z.
z is also very important, and here's some more information about z.
But of course, before we can set up z, we need to configure x to point to y.
I'm sure you can figure out how to configure x and y.
that's it, we're done.
So when you're done reading you feel like you have increased your general knowledge of the subject, but you really don't know exactly what you're supposed to do to actually make something that works.
I also would have liked more information about using commons-validator with Spring MVC instead of so much detail on VaLang. This would have been especially helpful for people moving from Struts to Spring MVC.
Those are the negative aspects of the book. On a positive note, it is fairly well written. There is a lot of good information that will increase your general understanding of the MVC and WebFlow frameworks. I do use this book as a reference from time to time, and it has provided me some value in that respect.
Overall though, I do not recommend purchasing this book. I think you can get a better idea of the WebFlow framework just by using the documentation on Spring's website, downloading the framework and walking through the examples. As far as MVC I think this book is better in the MVC chapters than it is in the WebFlow chapters, but with the release of Spring 2.0 even those chapters are now out of date.Expert Spring MVC and Web Flow (Expert's Voice in Java) OverviewExpert Spring MVC and Web Flows shows the reader how to use the Spring Web application development framework found in the extremely popular, open source Spring Framework. Picking up where the best selling Pro Spring left off, Expert Spring MVC and Web Flows covers Spring's Model-View-Controller (MVC) code packages, HTTP, best practices for Web application development, and integration with popular third-party utilities. This book also features the new Spring Web Flow system, a cutting edge workflow system being introduced in Spring 1.3. The Web Flow system provides the perfect compliment to the existing MVC system, rounding out Spring's robust and powerful Web development framework. The Spring MVC book will also pay special attention to existing Apache Struts-based Web applications. It shows the different options to integrate Struts code to take advantage of the power of the Spring Framework. The authors will also provide a porting guide, detailing how to port a Struts application into Spring MVC. This book will bridge the gap from the most popular web framework to the most popular application framework. The authors develop a sample application throughout the book, building on the application as a tool to introduce new material. They also plan on developing a small NetFlix/GameFly service for the example source code, believing that using a consistent application will provide context for all new features introduced and motivate their use in real-world practice.

Zend Framework in Action ReviewOverall I found this book to be helpful in understanding the inner workings of the Zend Framework. The low score I gave this book is attributed to the several errors in the code examples. It seems this book was rushed to publication and nobody verified that the code examples worked.
If you are like me and like to build the code as you read each chapter then this book is NOT for you. I could never get the code to work as written in the book. I would advise that you download the companion code from the publisher's website. The code from the site seems to have been tweaked after the publication of the book and does run correctly. Problem is it does not match the code in the book therefore you have to investigate why the book says one way while the code shows it another way. Very frustrating the say the least!
I can only recommend this book if the publisher decides to release a second edition with these errors fixed.
Regards.Zend Framework in Action Overview
From rather humble beginnings as thePersonal Home Pagescripting language, PHP has found its way into almost every server, corporation, and dev shop in the world. On an average day, somewhere between 500,000 and 2 million coders do something in PHP. Even when you use a well-understood language like PHP, building a modern web application requires tools that decrease development time and cost while improving code quality. Frameworks such as Ruby-on-Rails and Django have been getting a lot of attention as a result.

For PHP coders, the Zend Framework offers that same promise without the need to move away from PHP. This powerful collection of components can be used in part or as a whole to speed up the development process. Zend Framework has the backing of Zend Technologies; the driving force behind the PHP programming language in which it is written. The first production release of the Zend Framework became available in July of 2007.

Zend Framework in Action is a comprehensive tutorial that shows how to use the Zend Framework to create web-based applications and web services. This book takes you on anover-the-shouldertour of the components of the Zend Framework as you build a high quality, real-world web application. This book is organized around the techniques you'll use every day as a web developer"data handling, forms, authentication, and so forth. As you follow the running example, you'll learn to build interactive Ajax-driven features into your application without sacrificing nuts-and-bolts considerations like security and performance.

This book is aimed at the competent PHP developer who wants to master framework-driven web development. Zend Framework in Action goes beyond the docs but still provides quick access to the most common topics encountered in the development of web applications.

The Definitive Guide to symfony (Expert's Voice in Open Source) ReviewThe power of this amazing framework is truly revealed after you see how much thought has gone into its planning and documentation. I have been using the Symfony framework for six months with great success, but this book has given me a new perspective on Symfony's capabilities. PHP has been a mainstay in my web design business for almost 10 years, and I've used a number of different libraries and frameworks over the years. But nothing I've tried has come close to Symfony. The framework takes out the drudgery of common tasks like form processing and database/object interactions; and it does it in a way that is highly configurable. This book and framework have made web programming fun again.
Each chapter walks you through an important framework element from installation and setup to advanced features (cache control, plugin development, optimizing applications). It's written by two of the framework's lead developers. I would consider it a must-have for anyone using the Symfony framework. The Definitive Guide to symfony (Expert's Voice in Open Source) OverviewWeb application frameworks are one of the today's hottest topics, presenting developers with proven solutions for building applications faster than ever. Spurred on by the enormous success of Ruby on Rails, frameworks are being built in a variety of other languages, with the bulk of activity surrounding PHP. While numerous framework projects are well under way, none are as mature nor as popular as Symfony (http://www.symfony-project.com/). Bundled with numerous tools for helping document, debug, and test your applications, and developed in a manner encouraging agile development principles, Symfony is sparking the imagination of thousands of developers around the globe.Authored by project and documentation leads Fabien Potencier and François Zaninotto, The Definitive Guide to Symfony serves as a complete guide to all aspects of Symfony. Readers are guided through fundamental concepts such as installation, configuration, and security, followed by thorough discussion of advanced concepts such as scaffolding, routing, caching, and internationalization. Accompanied by hundreds of practical code examples, this book will help readers quickly master rapid application development using this popular framework.

Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) ReviewIf you are looking for a gentle overview of the ASP.NET MVC Framework, this is a solid book. If you are looking for a "Pro" book, there are better books available.
Over a third of the book is the Nerddinner walkthrough which is an excellent introduction to the ASP.NET MVC Framework. There are plenty of pictures so you don't lose your way, and the step-by-step instructions really help the beginning ASP.NET MVC Developer better understand the code, how it works, and why it was coded as such. Nerddinner will always be that beginner example we talk about and I love having it in book form.
The rest of the book starts to systematically look at the various pieces of ASP.NET MVC - Routes, Controllers, Views, and Filters. You basically get a very nice overview of each with a deeper-dive now and then. As a beginner book, I think the deeper dives are nicely placed and fine for someone who wants to use the MVC Framework out-of-the-box. However, for those who want to become an expert, extend the framework, or create an opinionated MVC Framework, you will be disappointed that the book does not go deep enough.
There are some smaller chapters on AJAX, security, unit testing, Webforms vs. MVC, and using Webforms with MVC. Again, good beginner material that gets your feet wet for more advanced and challenging books. The chapters entitled, Webforms vs. MVC and Webforms with MVC, feel like Microsoft product positioning, but they are still useful in understanding their thoughts ( whether you agree or disagree ).
Lastly the book has some quotes and personal thoughts by various ASP.NET MVC team members sprinkled throughout. I personally love those little gems as it gives you insight here and there into the development process and the decisions that had to be made. Reminds me of the book, Framework Design Guidelines. It humanizes the book, making it fun.
In conclusion, I think Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 is a solid beginner book. I think it would have been better named "Beginning ASP.NET MVC 1.0," but I have been using the ASP.NET MVC Framework for a long time, too.Professional ASP.NET MVC 1.0 (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) OverviewThis book begins with you working along as Scott Guthrie builds a complete ASP.NET MVC reference application. He begins NerdDinner by using the File->New Project menu command within Visual Studio to create a new ASP.NET MVC Application. You'll then incrementally add functionality and features. Along the way you'll cover how to create a database, build a model layer with business rule validations, implement listing/details data browsing, provide CRUD (Create, Update, Delete) data form entry support, implement efficient data paging, reuse UI using master pages and partials, secure the application using authentication and authorization, use AJAX to deliver dynamic updates and interactive map support, and implement automated unit testing.
From there, the bulk of the rest of the book begins with the basic concepts around the model view controller pattern, including the little history and the state of the MVC on the web today. We'll then go into the ways that MVC is different from ASP.NET Web Forms. We'll explore the structure of a standard MVC application and see what you get out of the box. Next we dig deep into routing and see the role URLs play in your application. We'll deep dive into controllers and views and see what role the Ajax plays in your applications. The last third of the book focuses entirely on advanced techniques and extending the framework.
In some places, we assume that you're somewhat familiar with ASP.NET WebForms, at least peripherally. There are a lot of ASP.NET WebForms developers out there who are interested in ASP.NET MVC so there are a number of places in this book where we contrast the two technologies. Even if you're not already an ASP.NET developer, you might still find these sections interesting for context, as well as for your own edification as ASP.NET MVC may not be the web technology that you're looking for.
It's worth noting, that ASP.NET MVC is not a replacement for ASP.NET Web Forms (aka just "ASP.NET"). Many web developers have been giving a lot of attention to other web frameworks out there (Ruby on Rails, Django) which have embraced the MVC (Model-View-Controller) application pattern, and if you're one of those developers, or even if you're just curious, this book is for you.
MVC allows for (buzzword alert!) a "greater separation of concerns" between components in your application. The book goes into the ramifications of this, but if it had to be said it in a quick sentence: ASP.NET MVC is ASP.NET Unplugged. ASP.NET MVC is a tinkerer's framework that gives you very fine-grained control over your HTML and Javascript, as well as complete control over the programmatic flow of your application.

Pro ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010 Review
Book review - "Pro ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010, by Matthew MacDonald, Adam Freeman and Mario Szpuszta. ISBN-13: 978-1-4302-2529-4 - Published by APRESS
Hi all, this is my book review of the new "Pro ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010 book". Since .NET framework 4.0 went into production in June 2010, I was pleased to see that an ASP.NET book targeting the .net framework 4.0 is out for publication. Also, I was pleased to see that the samples deal with C#. I believe that C# will be the dominant language in the .net framework arena for the foreseeable future. As one who programs in both C# and VB.NET, I would have to lean towards C# as the language of choice. We can see this trend also in the fact that most of the latest programming examples out there related to .NET framework are written in C#.
In general, we don't see a whole lot of new features in ASP.NET 4.0, but there are supposed to be improvements in performance and stability in ASP.NET 4.0.
New features worth mentioning include:
*Session state compression for out of process session state service (such as the venerable adStateServer sql server storage for session state)
*ASP.NET MVC - an alternative way (other than classic webforms way) to separate your website logic into three logical parts (Model, View and Controller). This MVC pattern has been around for awhile now, but it is now officially adopted into ASP.NET 4.0. Some people love the MVC model and believe it simplifies while others believe MVC just adds extra effort.
*ASP.NET Dynamic Data - A way of quickly generating data-centric websites that focus on viewing and editing database records. The pages are populated by inferring the schema of the data model (Entity Framework or LINQ to SQL) It is based upon LINQ (language integrated query). The dynamic data model is supposed to also allow more advanced customizations, than you may have seen with this type of "easy, code-generation of database data for maintaining websites" in the past.
As I read through this book, I realized that ASP.NET 4.0 is still based upon technologies that have been around for years now. ASP.NET 4.0 is a very mature and powerful technology. Much of the content of this book covers topics that would be covered in earlier versions of ASP.NET. This is not a criticism at all because the authors of the book meant to give a "complete description and understanding of ALL of ASP.NET" and not just coverage of the new features in ASP.NET 4.0 (of which there are relatively few new features as I previously stated). This book is almost 1600 pages long and has excellent coverage of the diverse topics that fall under the umbrella of ASP.NET.
This book is a complete treatise on ASP.NET topics such as:
*Web forms
*Server Controls
*User Controls
*An explanation of the ASP.NET processing pipeline and how they work including HTTPMODULES.
*An explanation of ASP.NET state management (remember HTTP is a stateless protocol, so ASP.NET has including things like View State, Session State and Application State as an abstraction of state that helps developers build web applications).
*ADO.NET - how to talk to databases with the .net framework - also explaining the use of dataset objects in disconnected architectures
*Explanation of databinding (especially in terms of the objectdatasource/sqldatasource controls)
*How to use data centric server controls (read up on gridview /formview /listview /detailsview) server controls.
*An examination of LINQ (which is a relatively new topic to the .net framework and has to deal with being able to query and iterate through collections of data in a common way using a language known as LINQ (language integrated query)
*How to use caching to solve issues such as increasing website performance and scalability of your web applications.
*How to deal with XML and the many ways of getting at xml (XPATH/LINQ/XSL etc.)
*How to write and use USER Controls which are a way for developers to easily reuse "nuggets" of programming and presentation layer by encapsulating the content into a user control A user control can then be "dragged" onto a page design surface and be used over and over within your website.
*Themes and Master Pages cover the ways that ASP.NET can enable reuse and standardize the "look and feel" of a website.
*Navigational Controls - (recommended readings are about sitemap /menus /multiviews)
*How to manage and deploy websites, whether it be simple xcopy, or use of web deployment packages).
*A very detailed explanation of ASP.NET security, including forms authentication and ssl. What I particularly appreciate about this book is it has very detailed information about the built-in security features that come with ASP.NET (these security features first came out in ASP.NET 2.0). This includes the ASP.NET membership api/forms authentication /role providers /profile providers and how to check principal permissions. There are more than 40 detailed pages on how to build your own custom membership provider which basically extends upon the provider model provided in ASP.NET. In my opinion, out of the box security concepts as provided in the membership/roles/profile providers are one of the most powerful and time-saving measures in ASP.NET. For example, I am building a custom "membership" portal that builds upon the standard forms authentication/membership provider/role and profile provider. This stuff is powerful and gets you up and running very quickly, much more quickly than if you had to roll your own authentication/authorization/user profile programming code. Believe me, I've been there and done that (wrote my own custom security code), but in today's fast paced software developer world, it's nice to be able to piggy back on ASP.NET security because it's powerful, well designed and easy to implement.I think this area is one of my most favorite topics of this book, because it has so much useful information here.
*The book goes on to deal with nice chapters on creating ASP.NET server controls, ASP.NET server controls are a way for programmers to build their own control that can be placed into the visual studio toolbox and used as a software component. Those of you who are familiar with Infragistics/Telerik and Component One know that server controls are powerful ways of allowing programmers to take advantage of nice web control suites to build very nice web interfaces. The companies mentioned above have written their own server controls that are available for programmers use. Microsoft also supplies ASP.NET server controls out of the box (textbox/gridview) etc.In this book, the chapter shows you the API that Microsoft provides so that any programmer can build their own server controls.
*How to deal with graphics and gdi programming as pertains to the ASP.NET world. Things like using pens/brushes as you would see in any type of graphics programming.
*JavaScript and Ajax get good treatment in this book as well, Ajax is an important technology in today's web environment for enabling very rich, responsive web user interfaces.
*Web parts are covered also in this book which is a neat technology, CMS systems such as SharePoint, make heavy use of web parts, so this is a must read for serious ASP.NET developers who also may want to leverage SharePoint and build custom web parts.
*MVC/Silverlight and dynamic data round out the rest of the book.Silverlight is an exciting technology that I expect to really get into in the near future, Silverlight 4 just came out and I want to see if we can build real business applications (LOB) with it. Dynamic data I have high hopes for, I haven't had a chance to play around much with it (Deadlines, deadlines), but I hope to see what dynamic data can do for me, this is one of the newest topics out in ASP.NET 4.0.
WHEW! This book has a LOT of useful information for any ASP.NET developer, even though I own at least 4 other ASP.NET programming books, I would definitely rate this book as a "must-have", it is chock-full of information that developers can use and take advantage of. As a full-time programmer, the more productive you can be, the more versatile and valuable you can be (not to mention, the more income you can generate). I highly recommend this book for those of you who use ASP.NET, it is very complete and the authors did a very commendable job detailing the broad and diverse topic of ASP.NET programming! With this book, you can tell a ton of effort was put into it. Note that there is also a "beginning ASP.NET 4 in C# 2010" book also published by Apress, I haven't had a chance to look at it, but the "pro" book that I am reviewing here certainly qualifies as professional level, because of the depth and breadth of its content!
One thing the book DOES lack, however is a sample website or "final project" that I have seen other ASP.NET books provide. I downloaded the source code for the book and it has samples for every chapter in the book. This book rocks though for sure!!!
With ASP.NET technology, it is a proven platform for building web applications and Microsoft has built something very powerful over the years. ASP.NET (and in general the .net framework) along with the excellent Microsoft Visual Studio programmers IDE is, in my humble opinion the best in class web programming environment out there. You can't go wrong by choosing ASP.NET as your web development platform of choice.
