Wizcom QuickLink SuperPen ReviewThe product description glosses over the problems you may encounter trying to connect this thing to your PC. It only supports a male 9-pin serial port. If you do not have one, you need to buy an adapter. Even then, you may be unpleasantly surprised. I bought a 9- to 25-pin serial adapter at Radio Shack only to burn an hour trying to set it up, and finally found, deep on the company web site, an explanation that it would only support a male 25- adapter. Now I have ordered a $20 +$5 shipping USB adapter off the Wizcom website. (Don't be fooled by the "optional USB" nonsense in the product description. It is optional in the sense that you can buy the $20 adapter later, after wasting half a day wading through the poorly documented material.) I feel that this company has been deliberately vague about the issues a customer is likely to encounter in setting this thing up. Oh, and I forgot to mention the UI's on both the pen and the desktop are wack.Wizcom QuickLink SuperPen OverviewThe Super Pen is a pocket-size scanner with optical character recognition that lets users scan lines of text and store them for later use. The Super Pen can also translate single words from English to more than 15 other languages, including Chinese, German, Spanish, French, Korean, and Japanese. No longer will you need to scribble notes on random pieces of paper or tear pages out of phone books. The Super Pen helps organize your life by storing and uploading up to 1,000 pages of text into your PDA, cell phone, or computer via serial, infrared (IrDA and IrObex), or optional USB connections.
This lightweight scanner also allows users to scan directly into supported applications in real time and recognizes a wide range of text styles and sizes including bold, underlined, italic, and inverted. The Super Pen weighs 3 ounces and measures 6 inches by 1.5 inches by 1 inch. Compatible with Win 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, and XP, this advanced device can easily be upgraded, with additional applications such as bar code recognition and eGems information-organizing software available. The Super Pen comes backed by a one-year limited warranty.

WizCom SuperPen Professional, Portable Business Library ReviewThe Wizcom SuperPen Professional because it could scan many pages of text and had an on-board dictionary that can pronounce words. The SuperPen Professional concept is fantastic, but it did not work as easily as I would have liked. (...), I would expect the SuperPen not to be so cumbersome to operate.
My first problem was getting the SuperPen Professional to link to my computer using the included Serial connector cable so I could upload scanned text to my computer. Although I loaded the software from the included CD-ROM on to my new Windows XP computer which had very few other applications or devices loaded on it, the computer could not connect to the pen. I followed the instructions to set both the pen and computer's baud rate to 115200, but this didn't resolve the problem. The Wizcom website suggested downloading the latest software version, but I couldn't find a link to download the applicable software. An email to Tech Support explained that the lastest software version is available at:
http://www.wizcomtech.com/Wizcom/support/updates.asp?fid=139&pfid=177&mid=10
and scroll down to Install or upgrade your Desktop by downloading and running the QuickLink Desktop installation program (4.9 Mb). Click on the link and save the file to your hard drive.
Once the file is saved to your hard drive, double-click it's icon and follow the instructions.
A call to Tech Support resolved my connection problem. It turned out that I needed to have the flow control on my computer's serial port set to hardware flow control. This was easy enough to do. I just wish that this advice had been published in the manual or on the web site. Ultimately, I did get the computer connection to work with the included serial port.
When connecting, I got an error in the Quicklink Desktop software until I disabled an option for Microsoft Outlook on the QuickLink Desktop application.
I'm having difficulty getting accurate scans with this pen when scanning articles in trade magazines. The articles have fairly small text that is divided into three narrow columns. Since I have to scan each short line separately, it is quite time-consuming to scan selections from an article. I often have to scan three lines to capture a complete sentence. When I couple the slowness of the scanning process with the effort needed to correct mis-spelled or incorrectly read scans, it becomes faster to use a computer to re-type my notes than it is to scan them. The user interface on the pen for making corrections on this device is awkward.
The dictionary feature is nice, but it was more of a hassle to properly scan the word in question than what I wanted to go to to get a definition. Perhaps a separate electronic dictionary where you could type in the word would be easier.
I got the best results when holding the SuperPen at a 90 degree angle to the text.
I used the scanner to scan content from a book, and found that the scanner was more efficient when scanning pages with longer lines of text than it did when I scanned magazine articles.
The SuperPen Professional is a great concept, but I prefer that it was easier to operate.WizCom SuperPen Professional, Portable Business Library OverviewWizCom SuperPen Professional, Portable Business Library

Franklin MWD-450 Merriam-Web Dictionary w/Calculator & Databank ReviewReview of Franklin/Merriam-Webster's MWD-450 and MWD-1440 electronic dictionaries
1. Lookups are slow on the MWD-450 (4-8 seconds is typical); response times are much better on the MWD-1440.
2. Definitions are shorter and simpler (often over simplified) on the MWD-450. The MWD-450 is probably better for a younger child (under 12), while the MWD-1440 should be better for teenagers.
3. The MWD-450 is missing many literary words and also some words that are important for understanding current events (e.g., "anti-Semitism" and "globalism"). The MWD-1440's dictionary, which is somewhat larger, contains "anti-Semitism" but not "globalism".
4. Displays on the two models have the same physical size, but the MWD-1440 displays more lines (5 lines instead of 3) using smaller and somewhat harder-to-read text.
5. Related word forms are not always shown. Here are two examples:
(A) If one looks up the word "naive", the noun form is shown as "naiveness". "Naivete", which is preferrable to "naiveness", is not listed as an alternative noun form. (One can, however, look up "naivete" separately).
(B) The MWD-450 recognizes "auspices" as a plural noun, but does not recognize the singular form "auspice".
6. The MWD-1440 has a slightly better keyboard; keys are squishy and badly shaped on the MWD-450.
7. Given that the MWD-1440 is aimed at college students, the calculator mode should include a more complete set of calculator functions. In particular, x^y (exponentiation), base-10 and base-e logarithms, and the sine and cosine functions should be provided.
8. On both models, the calculator mode would be easier to use if there were parentheses.
9. "Connect 4", which was one of the more interesting games on the MWD-400, is not available on the newer MWD-450 and MWD-1440.Franklin MWD-450 Merriam-Web Dictionary w/Calculator & Databank OverviewFranklin's Pocket Dictionary is the perfect, easy-to-use tool whenever you're stumped by a word. You can instantly look up 80,000 words with 274,000 definitions. The four-line display lets you comfortably read word definitions without extra scrolling. The phonetic spell checker ensures the right word will be found even if you misspell it. There are also many useful word tools like a crossword puzzle solver and learning exercises.
The MW450 also has nine fun word games (including anagrams, Hangman, Jumble, and tic-tac-toe), a clock with world and local times, a calculator with metric and currency conversions, and a Rolodex Electronics databank for names and phone numbers.

Franklin BES-2150 Speaking Merriam-Webster Spanish-English and Advanced Learner's English Dictionary (BES-2150) ReviewI purchased the BES 2150 instead of the BES 2100 primarily because it has a backlight in the display. I assumed the performance would be the same for both units since they appear to be identical from all outward appearances. After I started using it, I discovered that every shortcoming of the BES 2100 that had been articulated in the reviews on this site have been resolved in this new model. This translator is perfect in every way starting with the size and the outward appearance. The case is very high quality and very stylish. The size is just perfect, both for portability and for the size of the keyboard and display. I also found this unit to be very easy to use, quite contrary to some of the reviews of the 2100. Also, there seems to be no appreciable lag between the time you press the enter key and the time the response shows up on the screen. In particular, moving through the conjugations is almost instantaneous, which was one of the slowest features of the DBE 1450 which would take, literally, several seconds to move from one verb tense form to the next. The 2150 moves between these conjugations nearly instantaneously. And, you can pretty much respond to all the shortcomings that have been articulated about the 2100 with the phrase, "the 2150 fixes that." As an example, someone stated that you had to go through some circuitous path to get the 2100 to speak the sample phrases that come up when you look up a particular word. Well, apparently, the 2150 fixes that because all I had to do was to highlight the particular phrase and hit the speak button, and voila, it says the phrase. In short, this is a high quality, powerful tool and I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs the power this translator offers. Not everyone needs, or wants to pay for, that level of performance and sophication. This translator is a bit expensive.Franklin BES-2150 Speaking Merriam-Webster Spanish-English and Advanced Learner's English Dictionary (BES-2150) Overview

Franklin MWD-1490 Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus with Comprehensive Reference Set ReviewI recently got one and i'm pretty satisfied so far. Features of this include:
1. Word of the day (random word everytime you turnon).
2. Super-jump (jump to definition of any word in the screen).
3. dictionary thesaurus switch given a word
4. wrong spelling suggestion
5. word finder (by using ? or * characters). "?" will match any character. "*" will match any one or more characters. ie, "an?" will match "and, ant, any, etc"
6. Organizer (clock, address book, Calculator, Converter, Currency)
7. It has exercises (Spelling bee, SAT, flashcards)
8. It has 7 games (anagrams, hangman, jumble, word builder, word train, link four, tictactoe
9. 5-language translator
10. Display has 3 font option (small, large, medium).
Given that it's less than $50, it's a pretty good product. The display is OK and readable (don't compare it to colored back-lit LCD screen). It doesn't have backlight bec it's powered by 2 CR2032 battery. Keys are good. Dictionary content is the typical Webster book (not the heavy and thick one). Don't expect all known words to exist.Franklin MWD-1490 Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus with Comprehensive Reference Set OverviewWith over 300,000 definitions and five different languages, the Franklin MWD-1490 Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Thesaurus and Reference Suite is one of the most fully-featured electronic dictionaries you will find anywhere. Lightweight and compact, it completely eliminates the need to lug around heavy dictionaries. In addition to its thousands of definitions, the dictionary also features a vocabulary builder, SAT word list, punctuation guide, a basic calculator, a clock, and a variety of encyclopedic information. It even enables you to compile your favorite words into customized lists, making word studying much easier. Ectaco XL-1500 Partner Multilingual Talking Dictionary ReviewI was so dissapointed by this product. I had hoped to use it to identify and translate Japanses words and practice pronouncing them correctly.
It takes many steps to do simple translations. This was frustrating in a relaxed atmopshere. It would be near impossible underpressure.
When you press for the talking translation it sounds like a tired robot in a large can. Extremely difficult to identify what it is saying let alone try and duplicate it.
The other deal breaker was it only uses batteries. There is no way to charge it when not in use. You would need to carry around a case of batteries while traveling in order to use it throughout a trip.
The size was compact and light, that was a nice feature.Ectaco XL-1500 Partner Multilingual Talking Dictionary Overview

Franklin OEC-570 Compact Oxford English Dictionary with Thesaurus and Spell Correction ReviewI bought five of these electronic dictionaries for my five homeschooled children. Some words we tried to look up weren't in this dictionary. My highschool son just looked up a word today "cachinnate" and it wasn't in there. He had to go to the hardcopy dictionary. I purchased Franklin SCD-1890 for myself. I can't remember it not having any words we needed. We have had both of these dictionaries in our home for at least 4-5 years. I don't like that the Franklin MWD-1490 takes a large watch-type battery. The SCD-1890 takes AAA batteries, which we are more likely to have on hand at home. I currently have four high-school kids now and I find the MWD-1490 inadequate for their needs. It is still a good tool for my 6th grader.
For the cost and constant use the $50 plus spent on it was worthwhile. I am now ready to upgrade their dictionaries to a larger word database for highschool, community college and beyond.Franklin MWD-1490 Merriam-Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus with Comprehensive Reference SetFranklin SCD-1890 Speaking Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th EditionFranklin OEC-570 Compact Oxford English Dictionary with Thesaurus and Spell Correction Overview

Ectaco ML350 Handheld Electronic Universal Translator Dictionary ReviewI really hate to bust on an American-made product, but this one fell far short of my expectations.
First, the product description is way off. This product does *not* contain an MP3 player, have an SD slot, or a rechargeable battery.
Second, the CD that comes with it has badly outdated software that-- in my case-- wants to map my keyboard to French. It kindly offered me an upgrade for much more money than I cared to pay.
Third, it claims to have a dictionary of 4,000,000 words. I won't doubt that, but it must mean it contains 4,000,000 words across *all* of the many languages it supports. It falls far short of being useful even for a high school French class. (If you want to look up "taxi," you'll be fine. If you want to look up "ramer" -- to row a boat-- you won't find it in there.)
Ectaco has much better translators. Don't waste your money on this one.Ectaco ML350 Handheld Electronic Universal Translator Dictionary Overview

Lingo TravelMate Translator (TR-1650) ReviewReceived - 3/8/06
Died - 3/10/06
In between. - I was using it for German. The vocabulary is
is small despite the ad claims. It only has the
root words.
It would be much better to have it do one language
well than 16 poorly. Obviously, it would have
better if it worked more than 2 days too.Lingo TravelMate Translator (TR-1650) OverviewThe "16" in the TravelMate 16's name isn't just a model number. Rather, it represents the impressive number of languages handled by the compact electronic translator. Need to translate a phrase from English to German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Dutch, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean? Look no further than the TravelMate 16. The device draws from a database of more than 320,000 words and 32,000 useful phrases, covering everything from common business questions to more travel-specific queries on restaurant and hotel locations. At the same time, it offers eight currency and metric converters--including converters for clothing and shoe size--so you won't feel uninformed while shoe shopping in Paris.
Travelers will also appreciate the TravelMate 16's powerful databank, which lets you store all of your appointments, telephone numbers, addresses, and memos for later recall. The 32k databank is a must whether you're simply sending postcards to friends or following a comprehensive business itinerary. And you can rest assured that you'll make that early morning train thanks to the world clock--with times in more than 200 cities--and the highly accurate alarm.
Additional features include a 12-digit talking calculator, an easy-to-use QWERTY keyboard, a two-line dot-matrix display, an automatic power off function that preserves battery power, and an adjustable contrast. All this in a compact chassis that measures a mere 5 by 0.5 by 3.25 inches (W x H x D) when closed and fits easily in a shirt pocket or purse. The unit, which is powered by a trio of CR-2032 batteries, carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Franklin Electronic Publishers BES-1890 Speaking Spanish-English Dictionary ReviewI've had this dictionary about a month and a half and the few reviews I could find prior to buying it were not overly positive. But I bought it anyway and couldn't be happier with it. It is intuitive, very fast, and translates almost all the words I have entered. I have used it almost every day since I am attempting to move up from a high beginner to a strong intermediate in Spanish by month's end.
I have been in Buenos Aires for 11 days, with 20 to go, taking a 3 week Spanish course in a language school. I am in a low intermediate class and we have homework assignments and lots of exercises and speaking each day. I use the Franklin dictionary constantly when I don't know a word or need the equivalent in Spanish. The best part about the little computer in my opinion is the conjugations.
I have had and will have more class lessons in conjugations, so far only the present tense. When I am stuck on an irregular or any other verb I enter it into the dictionary, hit the conj key and bingo, aqui esta. Successively hitting the conj key takes you through all the tenses in all persons. While my classmates are fumbling around with their Spanish-English translation books, I have the verb, its meaning, and have already conjugated it, if applicable. It's my favorite feature and really helps me to learn the verbs and their forms.
The negatives are the rather poor audio for some of the translations (not all) and the fact that the screen is not backlit, although I have had absolutely no problem seeing it in normal or even somewhat low light.
I use it in restaurants here in Buenos Aires while I'm waiting or eating and can practice Spanish by inputting words or reading and translating phrases. It fits easily in the pocket of my shorts and I'd replace my BES 1890 immediately if anything happened to it.
If you're serious about learning espanol, or simply need a new translator, I recommend it. For the serious estudiante, it's more than worth the cost.Franklin Electronic Publishers BES-1890 Speaking Spanish-English Dictionary OverviewLearn to speak Spanish and English like a native with the Franklin Speaking Spanish-English Dictionary.New features include a Merriam-Webster Dictionary with 274,000 definitions and 4,800 commonly-used phrases in both Spanish and English recorded in human voice.

Lingo Voyager 5 Translator ReviewIt supports 20 languages. That is many. However, the vocabulary is limited with often used words. It will be very helpful for globe travellers.
It is also quite thin and lightweight which is very good. It comes with leather case even if it does not fit in exactly.
It pronounce the words. That is very good for a good communication and learning the words right.
It has many functions other than being dictionary like time zone support, calculator, games, etc.
The screen is quite big and easy to read. It would be great to have a color screen, LCD display even a touch screen. As the technology developed so fast and there are products with LCD display touch screen in the same price range on the market, that would be reasonable to imagine.
A good, functional product.Lingo Voyager 5 Translator Overview

Franklin Merriam Webster Spanish English Dictionary (DBE-1500) ReviewThe Franklin DBE-1500 is an upgrade / replacement to the DBE-1490. It's a full-featured non-speaking, calculator-like device (fits in a men's dress shirt pocket - barely) that contains the complete Merriam Webster English-Spanish dictionary / Spanish-English dictionary, English and Spanish conjugations, English and Spanish Phrases and the full Merriam Webster regular English Dictionary (a nice added feature). In addition to these core "books" it comes with a number of miscellaneous features such as SAT and TOEFL vocabulary lists, usage examples, English and Spanish grammar lessons and a few learning games (hangman, etc), a calculator, metric-standard measure conversions, and a currency converter (you obviously have to pre-configure the rates). You won't use much of this, but the added features don't get in the way.
The Merriam Webster dictionary isn't the best one out there, but I think it's as good a one as you'll find in any electronic device. The main difference between this and more expensive devices is lack of speech - a feature I didn't really want. (The speaking one is the BES-2150, which is actually a bit smaller.) It does a decent job both of picking up on misspellings and suggesting alternatives and of mapping conjugated verbs back to their root (both of which are shortcomings of hard-copy dictionaries). The user interface is simple and straight forward. The device boots up immediately. You can configure it to use either English or Spanish as the master (menu) language and set the default entry screen (e.g. boot straight to the Spanish to English dictionary). This means looking up a word is very quick and easy - much easier and much much faster than thumbing through a hard-copy dictionary. It has a configurable auto-off power-saving function, which is nice. There are also screen contrast settings, time settings, etc.
As for the user interface, the DBE-1500 is the same as the DBE-1490. However the case is redesigned. The flip cover hinges of the 1490 were thin and were on the outside back corners of the device. So, if you dropped it on a hard floor the cover would break. (That is the reason I ended up buying the 1500 after owning a 1490.) The 1500 has recessed hinges with about 4 times more surface area - It's a great improvement in terms of durability, but is not as easy to open by feel (while you're reading) and I find myself fumbling with it a bit when I want to look up a word. The liquid crystal screen is a bit sharper than the earlier model and it's noticeably faster (newer micro processor). The keyboard has a slightly tighter and more modern look (color scheme), but otherwise is the same. The device is pretty comfortable / easy to use. Basically the 1500 is the same as the 1490, but with a more durable case, faster more modern circuit board, and slightly sharper screen. Keep in mind that it's a $45 device, so don't compare its case and interface against a state-of-the-art $200 - $300 mobile phone / PDA.
Like its predecessor, the 1500 uses two CR or DL-2032 lithium calculator batteries. I read Spanish language newspapers on the train going to work, so use my dictionary every day + some at night and on weekends. The batteries in my 1490 lasted through 5 months of heavy use before needing replacing (much better than one would hope from AA or AAA alkalines). If you only use it casually, I'd imagine they'd last years (like a calculator). The batteries can be found in any U.S. drugstore or through Amazon for between $1.50 and $6. However, they might be difficult to find in some Central and South American countries, so if you're planning on travelling, you might want to bring a spare set.Franklin Merriam Webster Spanish English Dictionary (DBE-1500) Overview

Lingo Direct TT-5500 Euro 5 Talk 5 Language Talking Translator ReviewI found this to be a pretty good translator. You can fold the screen down to the keyboard which makes it very compact and easy to carry around. They keyboard is very detailed yet easy to figure out and use. I'm also happy with the translations and how easily you can switch between the various languages.
The reasons I knocked off two stars:
1) The sound quality for saying/pronouncing the words/phrases is horrible, barely better than nothing.
2) When you look up words, they supply just on translation for each word for the target foreign language, ignoring the fact that there are often more than one corresponding words.Lingo Direct TT-5500 Euro 5 Talk 5 Language Talking Translator Overview

Franklin 12 Language European Translator FR-TJS12 ReviewI have used this translator since 2005. I am amazed at all the words in this
handy translator and it is easy to use. The calculator comes in handy to convert dollars to Euros, the clock lets me know the time at home to know when to call too.
I would recommend it to others.
