Wizcom QuickLink SuperPen ReviewThe product description glosses over the problems you may encounter trying to connect this thing to your PC. It only supports a male 9-pin serial port. If you do not have one, you need to buy an adapter. Even then, you may be unpleasantly surprised. I bought a 9- to 25-pin serial adapter at Radio Shack only to burn an hour trying to set it up, and finally found, deep on the company web site, an explanation that it would only support a male 25- adapter. Now I have ordered a $20 +$5 shipping USB adapter off the Wizcom website. (Don't be fooled by the "optional USB" nonsense in the product description. It is optional in the sense that you can buy the $20 adapter later, after wasting half a day wading through the poorly documented material.) I feel that this company has been deliberately vague about the issues a customer is likely to encounter in setting this thing up. Oh, and I forgot to mention the UI's on both the pen and the desktop are wack.Wizcom QuickLink SuperPen OverviewThe Super Pen is a pocket-size scanner with optical character recognition that lets users scan lines of text and store them for later use. Ectaco C-Pen 3.5 BT Bluetooth Handheld Scanner ReviewAfter seeing all the positive and negative reviews for the Ectaco C-pen 20, I decided to take the dive and buy the Bluetooth version of Ectaco's handheld text scanner for my wife. I was apprehensive because there are no reviews for this product, but figured we could return the scanner if it didn't work.
My wife uses the scanner pen to scan text and notes from her law school classes. She stinks at typing, so being able to scan all the text she needs into her class outlines is a *huge* timesaver for her.
Caveats: we are on Vista as our operating system.
Pros:
Easy setup (make sure you follow the directions; DO NOT plug in the scanner prior to loading the software).
Scans accurately and quickly when plugged in via USB; see Cons for the story on Bluetooth mode.
Picks up the following kinds of text without problems: highlighted texts, text in books (make sure the pages are flat, though), or underlined text (provided your underline doesn't go through the text; see Cons)
Picks up kooky symbols, like the ones I found in some of my wife's textbooks (deltas, ampersands, etc.)
Cons:
Doesn't scan text well if you have underlined text and some of your underlining moves up through the printed text.
Doesn't scan very well in Bluetooth-only mode. Essentially, you have about 2-3 seconds to scan your line of text before the light on the scanner goes out and it transmits to your computer. I have no idea what the heck the deal is, but if the Bluetooth part of this scanner is really what you're looking for, I would recommend you *not* buy this product.
Scanner doesn't seem like the most well-constructed thing in the world, *but* it has held up well so far, so that might be a non-issue.
Overall: This text scanner does just fine when it's plugged in to the computer via USB cord. My wife really does save a lot of time in her studies. But, as I mentioned above, the Bluetooth really doesn't function very well at all. I originally gave this product 5 stars because it did exactly what it promised, but I'm changing my rating to (a very generous) 3 stars now that we've found out that the Bluetooth part of the show is so bad. Iris USOA447 IRIScan Express 2 Portable Scanner ReviewNota bene: I am a Mac user, and this review is only about the products interaction with Mac OS 10.5.
The IRIScan express 2 beats the DSmobile 600 hands down in terms of Mac compatibility, but that was still not enough to encourage me to keep the product. Despite the great OCR functionality of Readiris Pro 11 and the promise of convenience of Cardiris (which I did not get a chance to use), the software interface and workflow has a "we just managed to get this out the door" feeling to it. The interface is not at all Mac-like, and the scanner does not, on the Mac, provide a TWAIN or Image Capture driver. That lack forces you to use the provided clunky applications to make any scan.
Despite Readiris's outstanding OCR performance, the PDF output is less than optimal. The Windows software included with the DSmobile 600 (the only portable, sheet-fed competitor that claims Mac functionality [and doesn't deliver]) produces perfect facsimiles of scanned pages and adds OCR text to the PDF that allows you to search and index it without losing the character of the original document, just like Amazon's "Search Inside This Book" feature for those of you who haven't experienced PDFs like this. Readiris Pro does not have this feature. Its PDFs are what you would get if you took the text document output and printed to PDF: disappointing and not at all useful for archival purposes, my motivation for purchase.
Also, the scanner is EXTREMELY slow, and all-caps are deserved in this case. The scanner takes more than 60 seconds per page. This is impossible to use if you are looking at a stack of documents you need to digitally archive. Enough said. If you are looking to do paperless office on the Mac platform, you need to use either a sheet-fed all-in-one machine from Canon or HP or, even better, get the Fuji ScanSnap, which at $600+ is insanely priced but works like a charm... so I've heard.Iris USOA447 IRIScan Express 2 Portable Scanner OverviewThe Iris USOA447 IRIScan Express 2 Portable Scanner is a light, small, USB connected multi-purpose color scanning solution that is ideal for your remote scanning needs. Digimemo Handwriting Recogniti ReviewDigimemo Handwriting Recognition Software
I bought the DigiMemo L2 and have been using it about a week now. Just today I finally got the opportunity to trial the handwriting recognition. I found it very accurate, in spite of my "chicken scratch" cursive. When I semi-printed (mixed cursive and printing), it worked even better.
The software on the CD included with the DigiMemo is two-fold. First the software needed for communications upload to the PC and working as graphics tablet. Second, and this what I couldn't determine on Amazon's site, was that there is indeed handwriting recognition software included. However, it is only a 30-day trial version. My recommendation: First get the L2 and trial it to see if you like it. If so, come back to Amazon and buy the full-fledged version of the handwriting recognition (about $40).
Observations about handwriting and graphics drawing: I like to draw circles around my numbered items lists. The software was not very good in deciphering that. For the number 1 with a circle around it, it created a 4-character long alpha that was gobble-dee-gook. For my number 2 circled item, it created an "at" (@) sign. In reference to a server path, I wrote SRV05. It changed it to srvos. Other than those oddities, it was right on for every "real" (English) word I type. Exporting to Notepad, PDF, and Word was as simple as a single button click.
Regarding the hardware (L2): I wondered if it would capture very jagged low-definition copies of my handwriting. NOT. It is every much as high quality as my original handwritten notes.
If you don't want the leather briefcase sold separately, you'll need to shop for an oversized carrying case. To protect your investment and ensure you don't easily lose pens, I'd highly recommend it. The plastic casing of the "pad" is very cheap.
One note about OS: Before buying a read a review that a reader with Vista said it blue-screened his system (BSOD). That really worried me because I'm running Vista on an HP laptop with Intel Cenntrino. However, I am happy to report that the software loaded without any negative consequences.Digimemo Handwriting Recogniti Overview

Ectaco C-Pen 20 Handheld Scanner ReviewAs a scholar who works with books and other printed sources a lot, I have long been on the lookout for an easy way to scan text into my laptop. I've tried using both flatbed scanners and digital cameras for this purpose, but I've found both to be awkward and time-consuming. That's why I was pleased to discover the C-Pen 20 - it's not perfect, but it does the job quicker and more easily than any of the alternatives.
PROS:
- It's easy to use; you just press the pointer to the page and a light comes on to let you know that the sensor is active. You then sweep the C-Pen from left to right at moderate speed as if it were a highlighter, and it converts the text on the page into electronic characters on your computer.
- The text instantly appears wherever the cursor on your screen is located, so you can use this device with just about any Windows program (e.g., Word, Access, etc.).
- The recognition rate is higher than I thought it would be; it's better than 99% on book-sized text. In practical terms, this means that you'll get one or two errors on average per paragraph, but these flaws are easily corrected (particularly if your spell checker highlights them for you automatically).
- It's small and easily portable, so you can take it with you to libraries and archives with a laptop.
CONS:
- The character recognition is sometimes thrown off by underlining and other marks on the page.
- You must use it with a PC or laptop that has a USB port (it doesn't run on batteries like some scanning pens).
- Even though it recognizes just about every major language written in Latin, Cyrillic, or Greek letters, it can't handle older typefaces (like German Fraktur). It also has trouble recognizing some symbols (such as footnotes).
- You have to scan each line of text one at a time, so it's not necessarily the best solution if you need to copy many pages of text.
The bottom line is that the C-Pen 20 has been an excellent investment for me, and I recommend it to anyone who's looking for an easy way to transfer printed text into an electronic medium.Ectaco C-Pen 20 Handheld Scanner Overview
