Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns ReviewAlthough I've never used SmallTalk and have read only a couple of on-line introduction chapters on Dolphin SmallTalk, I had no problems reading it and applying the patterns in another language like Java, C++ or Python.
Let me put it simple: If you want to learn to think in objects, don't just read the book, do it!
If you have read "Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code" by Martin Fowler et al. then you'll recognize the thougts presented in this book. In this book the patterns are close to refactorings with a bunch of simple, good, readable and understandable advices to just about every little thing - it's more than a simple style guide: You'll always get told what the raison d'etre is - and if not, where to look for it.
I'm currently using the book as a reference for style of OOP. From a teaching point of view, the book is also extremely useful. Kent Beck likes to ask quistions in a heuristic manner. Because of the simple approach to every day experiences of developing, all the way down to the experiences of beginners, you won't have any trouble answering these quistions. In fact you'll probably start asking quistions to yourself likewise because of the magnicifent way this mind trick works for your way of thinking in objects (or otherwise).
As a developer - doing these patterns - you'll be amazed at how much little things can mean in a much bigger and more complex context, when you develop systems applying OO - especially huge systems.
I am compelled to repeat: Don't just buy it, do it!Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns OverviewThis book presents a set of patterns that organizeall the informal experience successful Smalltalk programmers have learnedthe hard way. Understand these patterns, and you can write much moreeffective code. Understand the concept of Smalltalk patternsand why they work. Then learn patterns for working with methods, messages, state, collections, classes and formatting. Walk through a developmentexample utilizing patterns.Smalltalk programmers, projectmanagers, teachers and students -- both new and experienced.

ADTs, Data Structures, and Problem Solving with C++ (2nd Edition) ReviewI am teaching the second programming / first data structure course in the department of electrical and computer engineering. I have used the first edition of this book several times, and as of fall of 2004 I am into the third of semester of using this second edition as a mandatory text.
This book is very good for students who already know how to program in C, C++ or Java. The first C or C++ course does not have to cover introduction to OOP though. My students learn C part of C++ in the first programming course. This book covers object oriented programming part of C++, and introduces/reintroduces pointers, file IO with streams, and C++ strings (good for former Java programmers). Then it follows into data structures. It starts with its own definitions of dynamic array that grows, and a simple linked list as basic data containers. Then it focuses on organizing access to data with stack and queue, and then migrates to the standard template library (STL). Everything is kept on the undergraduate student level. All other STL books I know assume that you are already an expert in programming or at lest for students after two programming courses, and are too difficult for average non-CS students.
I originally rated the first edition with four-stars only because it introduced pointers very late, out of the proper sequence and added the fifth star for the unique blend of introduction to OOP C++ and data structures, and STL. However, this edition is free from this inconvenience and it also makes C++ and data structures course accessible to former Java programmers. It gets true five stars from me this time.
ADTs, Data Structures, and Problem Solving with C++ (2nd Edition) Overview Reflecting the newest trends in computer science, new and revised material throughout the Second Edition of this book places increased emphasis on abstract data types (ADTs) and object-oriented design. This book continues to offer a thorough, well-organized, and up-to-date presentation of essential principles and practices in data structures using C++. Topics include C++'s I/O and string classes, pointers and dynamic allocation, lists, array-based and linked-list implementations of stacks, queues, searching, inheritance and more. For computer professionals in companies that have computing departments or those who want advanced training in C++.

Object-Oriented Programming in C++ (4th Edition) ReviewI took several C++ Program In Computing courses while in college, and I must say, this book did a fantastic job of turning the what was then "clear as mud" concepts to something I could understand.
Since those courses, I've learned C and a few other languages, but this book does a fantastic job of introducing OO concepts to a programmer, or a beginner who was otherwise doing procedural programs, or was just starting fresh. Lafore goes over the benefits of OO, and slowly builds on top of concepts throughout the book until you get a good overall understanding of the theory and the practice.
Two things I didn't like about the book:
1. There was very little discussion about doing things the "right way". By this, I mean, Lafore didn't really mention how certain methods of writing programs were less efficient than others. It looks like he was using the best practices in the book, so maybe that would have been overkill, but going a bit more in depth about why to do certain things certain ways would have been nice. While this is a beginner book, it certainly doesn't hurt to have sidenotes of this nature for those interested.
2. While the majority of the code in this book was portable to most platforms, it's still assumed that you're going to be on a Windows plaform, and Lafore uses several Windows-only graphics libraries to illustrate some points. Being a UNIX guy, I would have preferred that he stick to a platform neutral explanation.Object-Oriented Programming in C++ (4th Edition) OverviewObject-Oriented Programming in C++ begins with the basic principles of the C++ programming language and systematically introduces increasingly advanced topics while illustrating the OOP methodology. While the structure of this book is similar to that of the previous edition, each chapter reflects the latest ANSI C++ standard and the examples have been thoroughly revised to reflect current practices and standards.Educational SupplementSuggested solutions to the programming projects found at the end of each chapter are made available to instructors at recognized educational institutions. This educational supplement can be found at www.prenhall.com, in the Instructor Resource Center.

A Guide to MATLAB Object-Oriented Programming ReviewI agree with Dimitri. This book was published in 2007, but was written for Matlab 5 to 7.1. Matlab is now on 7.6 and uses a classdef .m file to create a class.
I had created some of my own classes from the Matlab help using classdef command and so was completely confused when I first started looking at the code in this book because it doesn't use classdef. Now I understand my confusion, the book is way out of date.A Guide to MATLAB Object-Oriented Programming OverviewA Guide to MATLAB Object-Oriented Programming is the first book to deliver broad coverage of the documented and undocumented object-oriented features of MATLAB. Unlike the typical approach of other resources, this guide explains why each feature is important, demonstrates how each feature is used, and promotes an understanding of the interactions between features.
Assuming an intermediate level of MATLAB programming knowledge, the book not only concentrates on MATLAB coding techniques but also discusses topics critical to general software development. It introduces fundamentals first before integrating these concepts into example applications. In the first section, the book discusses eight basic functions: constructor, subsref, subsasgn, display, struct, fieldnames, get, and set. Building on the previous section, it explores inheritance topics and presents the Class Wizard, a powerful MATLAB class generation tool. The final section delves into advanced strategies, including containers, static variables, and function fronts.
With more than 20 years of experience designing and implementing object-oriented software, the expert author has developed an accessible and comprehensive book that aids readers in creating effective object-oriented software using MATLAB.

Objective-C for Absolute Beginners: iPhone and Mac Programming Made Easy ReviewDOWNLOAD ALL THE CODE AT APRESS WEBSITE BEFORE YOU START at [...] !!!! The book was very good with the introduction of Alice and how it could be used to help get your program completed (the concept of Objects, methods, classes and how Apple's Objective C is used). Where they fall miserably short 100% is in chapter 8. They provide slices of the code that is used in the program, but do not show the actual code in it's entirety. The "Absolute Beginner", unless they have a Ph.D. in computer science and specifically work on Apple computers, is lost at this point. I really had high expectations on this book. Notably (dumb) corrections for example on pages 131. In the code for Listing 7-5, you have to import "RadioStation.h", otherwise the "Absolute beginner" will wonder why is program doesn't work. Chapter 8 just boggles my mind. Snippets of the code just doesn't cut it...we are dealing with the "Absolute Beginner". THEY HAVE PROVIDE ALL THE CODE TO DEMONSTRATE! There were a few other issues but they did teach you enough by chapter 5 to look for the items that they left out in other chapters. I'm going to still completely read the book, but I was looking forward to completing it and understanding all the concepts with Objective-C. I'm just hoping chapter 9 - 12 are prepared better. They almost do a great job up to chapter 8. It was a 4 (out of 5) going up to chapter 8. Chapter 8 just pisses me off (very annoying...rewrite chapter 8). Unless you have the code (and eventually I'll find it), it becomes very annoying. I hope they provide the second revision with all the corrections to the people who bought this book. The code is on apress's website (one little indication at the bottom of the back cover in the lower left-hand corner. They should have told the reader to download the code prior to attempting chapter 8. It really could have been a winner. I would think that the publishing company would have someone review this book before it is published. You have to blame both the writers and publishing company on this one. With the code from apress, I will give the book a 3. If it didn't have the issues I just discussed, it would be a 4. I hope that when I get to chapter 14, the book get's better. This book could eventually be a 5. So this is how the rating goes: Chapters 1 - 7 Excellent: 5. Chapter 8 - 9: 1. Remember "Absolute Beginner". Chapter 8 and 9 must have been written by another person who had no idea who this book was for.Objective-C for Absolute Beginners: iPhone and Mac Programming Made Easy OverviewThe success of Learn to Program Objective-C, from Apress, allowed many people to migrate their existing programming skills to Objective-C. This book allows even people who have never programmed before, but are inspired by what their Mac or iPhone can do, and what their friends have achieved with it, to program these devices for the first time, even with no programming knowledge.Objective-C is gaining popularity faster than any other programming language, which isn't surprising since it's the native development language for both Apple's iPhone OS and Mac OS X. "Objective-C for Absolute Beginners" is the first book to introduce this rich, object-oriented language to new programmers.
