Python For Dummies ReviewI agree with some of the reviewers here, it is definitely disappointing to see a bad seed among the good "... for dummies" series. I have previous experience with programming languages, although this is not my everyday task. I got interested in Python and wanted the book to guide me through the basics. After reading the first 7-8 chapters I started asking myself whether I missed something in the previous ones, as I lost track (and interest) in the book.
I found the examples parsed in the chapters rather useless, and not practical. Since, I have found several useful on-line tutorials on www.python.org, where the user is taken through the chapters in a gradual, progressive way. The examples and exercises in a beginner's book should be based on what is learned in the previous chapters, giving the reader the idea that what is learned is put in practice, thus easily assimilated.
I don't recommend this book for a complete novice, as she/he will lose interest in Python programming very easily! This book has the advantage of presenting the main and most important features of the Python programming language, but it sues a more advanced audience.
The low rating is indeed due to the non adequacy of the book for beginners and for not following the good standards of the "...for dummies" successful series.

The Web Startup Success Guide (Books for Professionals by Professionals) ReviewThis should be a couple of blog entries in a B+ blog, not a $20 book.
The book is not only badly written, it does not hardly any useful content either. Everything said here should be obvious to any person who has lived for any time near any web business. The author has unnecessarily made the book fat by having many long interviews with his friends - most of them add little to the content .
If you find this book useful - you should ask if you are the right person to run a business and perhaps spend sometime learning "basic business stuff" first.
Here is my recap of content:
* Chapter 1: Introduction: Funding a web startup today is easier than ever and many options exist including self-funding (duh!!)
* Chapter 2: Create value. There is no shortage of just "ideas" (duh, again !!)
* Chapter 3 & 4: There are lot of tools available to you like SaaS platforms, open source cms and local meetup groups (duh, duh ,duh !!)
* Chapter 5 is about raising money. It is filled with meaningless generalizations ("raising money is like falling in love") - none of them of much use.
* Chapter 6 is about social media. More generic stuff. Nothing said here is so remarkable that you cannot find it online - just google "how to market on social media" and just read the top 5 links. you will be WAY AHEAD of this book.
* Chapter 7 - The summary is - You need to be clear about what your USP is (duh !!)
* Chapter 8 - A long chapter on GTD methodology. There is no reason for it to be in this book. If GTD is your way, read a book on GTD.
* Chapter 9 - a needlessly long chapter about author's recommendation of 6 blogs to read.
Throw this book in fireplace - that will be more useful.The Web Startup Success Guide (Books for Professionals by Professionals) OverviewFor every one brick-and-mortal business that is created, there are ten web startups, begun by everyday folks who have development knowledge and access to a web browser. HTML for Dummies ReviewThis was the first web design-related book I ever bought. I now own a fairly successful web design company and my collection has expanded to about 30 books. My very first exposure to HTML was through a bunch of online tutorials from all over the place where I learned very basic HTML. I needed to buy a book for two reasons: 1) I wanted to learn more advanced features like tables, frames and forms and 2) I was sick of running all over the web to find everything I wanted, I needed one single resource. Well, this book certainly did the trick.
Tittle and James do a great job at first bringing the reader up to speed on the internet which, as we all know, is the environment of HTML pages. Then they went into an introduction of HTML basics which is the part I skipped because, as I said before, I had already learned that stuff online. Then it was on to the most valuable section of the book: a complete list of the "HTML tag team" and a complete listing of the entire ISO-Latin-1 character set. You have no idea how many times I refer back to these sections every day. They are worth the $20 alone. Then they covered the advanced topics such as tables, frames and forms and grouped them all together in the same general area of the book which was convenient because those were the main topics I set out looking for. Towards the end, they give some very useful tips on coding and design that will help in any project you do.
The only 2 other books on HTML that are worth your money are HTML Goodies by Joe Burns and HTML 4: A Visual Quickstart Guide by Elizabeth Castro. I would reccomend any and all of these three as they all have their own strong and weak points. I would say that between the two aforementioned, HTML Goodies would compliment this Dummies book the best because it discusses topics that I missed in the Dummies book. For example, Goodies does an excellent job at explaining how CGI works in HTML while Dummies briefly touches on it and then refers you to their CD. This, along with other relevant issues, were either missing from the Dummies book or only on the CD. There were many other topics as well that I looked up in the index only to find out that they were on the CD which is much more of a hassle than flipping the pages of a book. Other than that, HTML for Dummies was a great tutorial and as I said before, the HTML tag listing and character set listings are indispensable and the best I have ever seen. For a well-rounded easy-to-read basic tutorial that also serves as a helpful reference, look no further.HTML for Dummies OverviewNew Web authoring tools such as Claris Home Page, Microsoft FrontPage, and Adobe PageMill almost take care of all the HTML markup needed to build great-looking Web pages. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, the spirit of innovation rages on at companies like Netscape and Microsoft -- and stays well-ahead of even the best Web authoring tools. That's why it pays to have the completely updated HTML For Dummies, 3rd Edition, on hand so that you peer under the hood of your Web pages to add Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer enhancements, JavaScript, ActiveX, and Java applets that heighten the functionality and style of your whole Web site. Plus, Web pros Ed Tittel and Steven N.
