Preparing for exams requiring a certain level of verbal knowledge necessitates more than flipping through a dictionary. "Kaplan Word Power" is what the studious test taker needs.
There are 750 words presented amidst 55 lessons. With titles like "Thomas: Not a Temerarious Tatterdemalion" you will enjoy the game of learning what chapter names mean.
Kaplan prepared this book. This matters because they are experts at teaching test takers how to get higher scores on the LSAT, GRE and other major exams. They aren't the only ones capably doing it, but they are among the leaders. They have the experience to write this book.
The definitions are brief, only slightly more complex than a Scrabble dictionary. With each definition is enjoined with a sentence following the theme of title.
For example, tatterdemalion is defined as "a ragged person, always in tatters" accompanied by "Tatterdemalions everywhere foraged through the garbage for some food."
There are 10-15 quiz questions for each chapter. A significant appendix called "Root Juice" provides a useful collection and explanation of key Latin, French and Greek roots.
This is an effective way to shine up your vocabulary. I fully recommend "Kaplan Word Power" by Meg F. Schneider.

Franklin SAT-2400 Princeton Review Pocket Prep for the New SAT ReviewWhen I first saw this product, I thought, what a great idea! My daughter could practice SAT questions in the car or while she's waiting for an appointment. However, this product is basically the contents of the book, "Cracking the New SAT," but is a lot less readable and usable than the book that costs about $20. The screen is too small to be able to read the whole question so you have to scroll back and forth several times before you can answer the question. There is no easy way to navigate through the sections--the book would have been easier. The practice drills seem to be almost nonexistent and I still haven't figured out how to access the word flash cards. There are only three practice tests: the book with the CD-rom has 7. Both the book and the pockt prep give you access to more online tests and support. I felt that the designers of this product missed the boat on how a teenage could use this product--it would have been a better product if it randomly gave you practice questions and if it had on the main menu immediate access to different types of questions and reference materials. I thought that this device would randomly give you a question, you answer it, then it would give you an immediate response and explanation. Instead you have to slog through an entire test before you get any results. It seems illogical that anyone would want to do an entire SAT test on a tiny screen that is so difficult to read. This is a portable device but its designers don't seem to realize what portability means in terms of content and design.Franklin SAT-2400 Princeton Review Pocket Prep for the New SAT Overview

Royal Machines RP Pro American Heritage Dictionary with Roget, Abbreviations, Translation & Spelling, SAT, Britannica CD Electronic Organizer (Grey) ReviewI found this product easy to use, but it does not have the graphic resolution I am used to. I don't spell well, so I found it very difficult to find the correct words and the correct spelling of them. The RP Pro is a good entry level electronic dictionary for someone who spells well, but if one needs a high screen resolution and spelling resolution, I recommend getting one of the better Franklin Electronic dictionaries. However, make sure of the size, weight and features of the unit before buying an electronic dictionary - they can be quite different.
My RP Pro came with a Merriam-Webster's dictionary and Thesaurus as part of the enclosed Britannica computer program. That is a plus. *I run it on my Windows XP computer.
Conclusion: If one wants a small inexpensive unit that will not break the bank if it gets lost or broken, buy this one because it has a lot of words and is easy to use.
