Java Programming with Oracle SQLJ ReviewI've been using SQLJ for some time now, and there's no question SQLJ is going to be THE way to access an Oracle database using Java - SQLJ is a lot easier to use than JDBC.
This book introduces the subject of SQLJ and Oracle in a well organized manner, and also covers the advances features like including SQLJ in Enterprise JavaBeans. This book even covers the new Oracle9i features.
Up to this point, I was frustrated by the lack of decent books on SQLJ. One of the things I really liked about this book is that the programs and database scripts actually work!
If you want to learn SQLJ, this is the ONLY book worth buying.Java Programming with Oracle SQLJ Overview
If you're a Java programmer working in an Oracle environment, you're probably familiar with JDBC as a means of accessing data within an Oracle database. SQLJ takes you further, allowing you to access a database using embedded SQL statements. Java Programming with Oracle SQLJ shows you how to get the most out of SQLJ.

Layered on top of JDBC, SQLJ greatly simplifies database programming. Rather than make several calls to the JDBC API just to execute a simple SQL statement, SQLJ executes that statement simply by embedding it within the Java code.

In this book, Jason Price explains SQLJ programming from a task-oriented point of view. You'll learn how to:
Embed queries and other SQL statements within Java programs Deploy SQLJ code not only on client machines, but also to JServer--Oracle's Java engine built into the database Use advanced techniques for working with collections, streams, large objects, and database objects, all without leaving the comfort of the SQLJ environment Tune SQLJ programs for maximum performance

Throughout the book, the exposition of SQLJ and SQLJ programming techniques reflects the author's many years of professional experience as a programmer and consultant. Examples are first-rate, enabling you to learn SQLJ in no time. If you're writing Java code to access an Oracle database, you can't afford not to know about SQLJ.

J2EE FrontEnd Technologies: A Programmer's Guide to Servlets, JavaServer Pages, and JavaBeans ReviewI spent a long time... trying to decide between this book and Budi Kurniawan's "Java for the Web with Servlets, JSP, and EJB" - the only two I can find that give an integral treatment of this trinity of J2EE technology.
I ultimately decided to go with Kurniawan's book mainly because he is a better teacher and explainer, and that the book is better organized. Jorelid's book is for you if you are a hard-cored geek to whom reading UML and standard specs is second-instinct. He started the book - chapter 1 - with an extended, class-by-class coverage of the servlet package - no practical example until chapter 2. There ARE flashes of brilliance here and there though, for example his lucid explanation of the evolution of servlet-collaboration technology, from direct invocation to filters. However, the lack of sub-chapter headings in the TOC makes it VERY difficult to locate a specific topic.
Jorelid scores a clear point over Kurniawan in covering struts. But then he does not provide the still-larger discussion of application design (e.g. a chapter dedicated to a sample project from design to deployment, showing how to translate UML from design/analysis into servlets, JSP and EJBs - where his use of UML would be most justified).
In short, you may like it if you are a Wrox kinda guy. For other mortals, Kurniawan is a gentler guide.J2EE FrontEnd Technologies: A Programmer's Guide to Servlets, JavaServer Pages, and JavaBeans OverviewServlets and JSP (Java Server Pages) are the main way that Java is used in the Web today. These are Java programs that run on a Web server that allow HTML content to be dynamically generated (often by querying a database) and then sent via the Web to a "client" machine that made the request in the first place. Jorelid's book concentrates on teaching the programmer how to fit the various pieces together, spending as little time as possible on plumbining. By concentrating on the patterns needed for Servlet/JSP development, this book avoids the trap that all existing books on Servlets and Java Server Pages fall victim to: that of spending far too much time on the various APIs and not enough time on the bigger picture that is necessary for successful enterprise application development. Concise and relentlessly practical, Jorelid draws on his extensive consulting experience to deliver the most useful book on subject. About the author: Lennart 'Häxx' Jorelid has consulted in Java-based solutions to some of the largest European companies. Through his affiliation as a Java Manager with jGuru (one of the most popular Web sites for Java Developers), he has explained Java technology to thousands of programmers.

Professional ASP.NET Server Controls: Building Custom Controls with C# ReviewThis is the worst, most overpriced, Wrox book I have ever purchased. If only the entire book had been of the quality of the added chapter "JavaScript and Server Controls" (available from Wrox.com). Now that was an excellent read. I can't believe it was the same group of authors.
This book attempts to reduce a complex topic to a few lame examples and no real explanation of the concepts. I was very disappointed. I got no more information than I already had in a single chapter of "Professional ASP.NET".
See the MSPress book "ASP.NET Server Controls and Components" for an example of how it should have been done. The MSPress book (~700 pages, as opposed to 439 for the Wrox book) provides a thorough treatment of the topic with excellent, sometimes challenging, but always well documented examples. The authors consistently make a point of explaining WHY something was done. I found that quite refreshing. Reasons are important to good understanding!
Each chapter of the MSPress book builds on earlier chapters, but sequential reading is not absolutely necessary. The MSPress book appears to benefit from a wealth of inside information; things you may never decipher from reading the .NET documentation. It includes everything you need to know about writing .NET Server Controls!Professional ASP.NET Server Controls: Building Custom Controls with C# OverviewServer Controls are a core part of the ASP.NETarchitecture. They are components that produce a user interfaceelement that can be reused with ease. The standard controls that comewith ASP.NET include the textbox, the button, the data and listcontrols, and some rich controls (for example, the calendarcontrol). This book is designed to show you how to create your owncontrols, either from scratch, or based on existing controls. This book is designed to be a complete reference on how to createCustom Server Controls using C#. In essence, it's a definitive guideto what they're used for, how they are created, and the benefits thatthey can provide. The first part of the book will be concentrating on the code itself, and is designed to be editor-neutral, concentrating on the raw codeinvolved in creating controls and making use of these controls. Thesecond part of the book will have more coverage of visual designerslike Visual Studio .NET, talking about why using IDEs is so helpful, and examining the powerful features of Visual Studio .NET that areuseful when creating custom controls. This book is a comprehensive guide to all of the processes involved increating fully-functional server controls, including handling events, managing state, templating, creating data binding controls, anddistributing controls. The book will finish with a case study that will bring together all ofthe concepts discussed in the earlier chapters.

Advanced Messaging Applications with MSMQ and MQSeries ReviewThis book is relative if you are using MSMQ or MQSeries. There is also a chapter regarding using both of these messaging products together. This book will get you 'up and running'. The concepts of messaging are nicely explained
As the book was published in Dec 1999 I would have expected more coverage of MSMQ 2.0 and code samples in Java or C++. The author uses C for the examples! This actually makes the code samples more complex - such as the use of static local variables rather than private members.Advanced Messaging Applications with MSMQ and MQSeries OverviewAdvanced MSMQ Programming focuses on the internal programming procedures and concepts associated with Microsoft's Message Queuing Server.Experienced NT/Windows developers and C programmers receive an in depth look at the MSMQ architecture, programming techniques, securing techniques, and configuring techniques. ASP.NET 1.0 Namespace Reference with C# ReviewWhat this book covers: web controls, HTML controls, mobile internet toolkit, caching, configuration, security, xml, data and quite a few chapters on web services. Add a chapter (intro) on ASP.NET and you have the entire book summed up. Now the review:
I used to love Wrox. From a programmer's standpoint, they used to have the best books, bar none. Unfortuantely, they seem to be more interested in being the first to market these days rather than being the best.
On the plus side, Wrox's books always have plenty of sample code. This book is no exception. The problem I have is the book tries to be both an intro and a namespace reference, and it does neither exceptionally well, although it does better as a namespace reference. For this reason, I will keep this book in my normal reference library until something else comes along, but a more complete reference on the .NET Framework would be a wonderful addition (hint! hint!).
The book starts out as an intro to ASP.NET. Since ASP.NET is more of a technology than a language or product, this is a tough row to hoe. ANd, the book falls a bit flat. In previous ASP books, this was a much easier task, as ASP was thought of more as a language (due to the overwhelming adoption of VBScript for server side code) than a technology.
The book then begins to go through various .NET Framework namespaces that you will use with ASP.NET. While I believe a more full reference is in order, the namespaces covered are those you are more likely to use in your web work. The book tools along for awhile and then takes a sudden break with mobile controls. While I believe these are useful for web work, the placement of this chapter in the middle of the book is a bit confusing (must be the multiple author problem). The other confusing chapter is called Useful .NET namespaces - since almost every chapter deals with a namespace, why stop in the middle to generically single some out?
The book is not bad, and it is certainly worth the (price). I guess I have just come to expect so much more from a Wrox Reference. As they become heftier, they are less useful as a book to carry to a client site. And, as they become more a teaching book (which they are not doing well at here) and less a reference, it becomes harder to justify the expenditure.
In Summary: If you need a reference to learn a bit more about the .NET Framework namespaces, as they relate to ASP.NET, this is a good addition to your library. If you want to learn ASP.NET, look elsewhere.ASP.NET 1.0 Namespace Reference with C# OverviewThis book is a complete reference to the ASP.NET namespaces for developers who are already familiar with using ASP.NET. There is no trivial introductory material or useless .NET hype - we get stuck into the .NET Framework and don't look back. We provide in-depth coverage of all the major ASP.NET classes in a pure reference format, giving you those real-world tips that the documentation doesn't offer, and demonstrating complex techniques with simple examples. Each chapter covers another of the ASP.NET namespaces, from System.Web right through to System.Web.Services.Protocols, with coverage of individual classes, methods, and properties presented in easy-to-use alphabetical order. For anyone who is serious about getting the most out of the ASP.NET classes, this book is a must.

Visual C++ Optimization with Assembly Code ReviewThe book delivers what the title promises: how to combine Visual C++ with assembler. Each possible combination of calls (C++ -> assembler, assembler -> C++) will be explained in great detail. Examples are kept simple which helps the reader to not loose survey what's the point to be explained in that example.
You should not expect to get much instructions how to write the fastest assembly code possible. The book gives only a couple of hints in chapter 1 ("The existing loop commands ... slow down the overall performance of the program and are indeed an anachronism to the modern processor models."). It doesn't prevent the author to use that loop command in later examples anyway.
Sometimes I also missed explanations about assembly commands and MASM directives used in the examples. If you completely want to understand what's going on you have to have additional reference material (Intel, MASM) at hand.
Conclusion: It's a great book about all aspects of interaction between Visual C++ and assembly language. If you want to know how to get out most of your assembly code you should use a different book (e.g. "Inner Loops" by Rick Booth)Visual C++ Optimization with Assembly Code OverviewDescribing how the Assembly language can be used to develop highly effective C++ applications, this guide covers the development of 32-bit applications for Windows. Areas of focus include optimizing high-level logical structures, creating effective mathematical algorithms, and working with strings and arrays. Code optimization is considered for the Intel platform, taking into account features of the latest models of Intel Pentium processors and how using Assembly code in C++ applications can improve application processing. The use of an assembler to optimize C++ applications is examined in two ways, by developing and compiling Assembly modules that can be linked with the main program written in C++ and using the built-in assembler. Microsoft Visual C++ .Net 2003 is explored as a programming tool, and both the MASM 6.14 and IA-32 assembler compilers, which are used to compile source modules, are considered.

Protect Your Information with Intrusion Detection (Power) ReviewWhile perusing a bookstore in Saskatchewan (don't ask!), I found "Protect Your Information with Intrusion Detection" (PYIWID). I was pleasantly surprised to see an old version of a paper I had written several years ago cited in the bibliography, and the table of contents seemed to mention all the right subjects. I hadn't heard any "buzz" about this book, but I thought I might have found a hidden gem. I should have left the book on the shelf!

The first aspect of PYIWID that strikes the reader is the awkward English. The author appears to be Russian, and his editors gave him little support. Many times where the word "block" should be used, "lock" appears! For example: "Most network devices and programs lock ICMP packets and do not pass them" (p. 55). "If you detect an attack and start trying to lock it with firewalls..." (p. 60). These were followed on p. 84 by mentions of "Red Code" and "Blue Code," instead of "Code Red." Other sections make questionable, if not totally false, claims. For example: "Agent installation is especially dangerous for open systems, such as Linux and OpenBSD, since the agent can be introduced into the OS kernel." Ever hear of kernel mode Windows rootkits?

Other quotes just make no sense, such as first describing hiding processes on p. 62 and then saying "Using the rootkit or SunOS represents an example of this method." I was sad to read that "the White House server was blocked for tree hours and, on May 22, the server was unavailable for six hours." (p. 42). Some material indicated fuzzy thinking using sweeping statements, such as "Intrusion detection systems can identify and block practically all propagation methods used by hybrid attacks" (p. 49). The author seems to think math will solve your problems; this quote was outrageous: "Since intrusion detection technologies still lack a solid mathematical foundation, there is no possibility of developing efficient methods of detecting attacks and efficiently counteracting them." The author also thinks vulnerability assessment products are intrusion detection systems, covering scanners and such in ch. 6.

On the positive side, I think PYIWID has a great bibliography. It mentions lots of useful papers, some of which are mentioned in the book. I also liked the TAP diagram on p. 369. I initially thought the inclusion of various security "was stories" was useful, until I realized they appeared at random times and were often uncited. The exception was the heavy reliance on stories from books by Vacca. I was sad to see the author mainly relied on other people's packet traces for this book! "Most of the listing examples provided in this and subsequent sections were taken from [the SANS Internet Storm Center], or are based on practical exercises performed within the framework of preparing for [GIAC certification]" (p. 96".
It was my fault that I bought this book. I should have been tipped off by the odd choice of "key points" on the cover: "describing firewalls, indicating security policy violations, analyzing the information sources, improving the IDS security level." These sound awkward, and PYIWID follows that theme throughout. I give it three stars because the author did a lot of working bringing disparate sources of information together in this single volume, but he did not present it coherently.Protect Your Information with Intrusion Detection (Power) OverviewThis comprehensive reference provides a detailed overview of intrusion detection systems (IDS) offering the latest technology in information protection. Introducing network administrators to the problem of intrusion detection, it includes the principles of system technology and an in-depth classification in IDS. Topics covered include information gathering and exploitation, searching for vulnerabilities, distributed attack tools, remote and local penetrations, and password crackers, sniffers, and firewalls. Examples of actual information system break-ins provide practical reference.

Professional VB.NET Review...spoil the soup. The combined regurgitation of 17 authors, each with their own programming style and unorthodox naming conventions makes for a very confusing book. The proofing on this book is absolutely miserable. You had better be a professional developer to get past the myriad of errata in the sample code and text.
All in all, the book does provide a decent jumping off point from which to explore the world of VB.Net. Don't expect a definitive manual, though. If you want that, read the online documentation for Visual Studio.Net. In many ways it is far superior and certainly the last word. I did read this book cover to cover and worked through all the examples. Thankfully, I was able to pick out and fix the errors in the code. A less experienced developer may become quickly frustrated with this book.
The examples are often academic and rarely provide any real-world insight into the intricacies of application development. Another frustrating point is the continued use of the phrase "...we'll explain that later in chapter 'XX'...". In some cases this phrase is used several times in one paragraph. It points to a lack of organization and planning as to how the material should have been presented. You should rightly be very suspicious about a book that was written well before the actual release of the .Net SDK. I think it would be safe to say that as a result, none of the authors have written production .Net code. And from the look of some of their examples, God help their clients.
Overall rating: disappointing. Would I buy it? Probably not. I was able to get my hands on one of several copies floating around at one of my client sites. If you have the ability to borrow it, do so and save yourself the $40. Otherwise, just skip it and read the online documentation that comes with the product.Professional VB.NET OverviewWe have updated this title and replaced it with Professional VB.NET, 2nd Edition ISBN1861007167, which will be available from April 2002. Palm & Pocket PC Programming ReviewWhoa, This book is out of date! It starts off with some interesting history about PDAs. The editing is a little rough with typos and stilted english. The AppForge info is two years old. Even worse, the Microsoft embedded Visual Basic chapters are pretty worthless and even more out of date. Save your money for a more recent book.Palm & Pocket PC Programming OverviewA guide to developing applications for the main types of modern mobile devices-the Palm OS and the Pocket PC, this book focuses on using the new MobileVB tool from AppForge to create PDA applications. The applications developed are specifically for Palm devices, pocket computers with the Pocket PC/Windows CE operating system, and for Kyocera and similar communicators. Descriptions are of a different, free development environment from Microsoft-eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0-that allows programmers to create applications for pocket computers with the Pocket PC OS and its previous version, Windows CE. Sap R/3 Abap/4: Command Reference ReviewEven as a newcomer to ABAP, I am finding this text very helpful. None of my rackfull of "How-To" books makes any sense as a reference, and I find the online help hopelessly verbose and unfocused. I've even spent a few minutes actually reading the book... and liking it. Barrett's style is just right. In addition to the commands, there are many concise explanations of obscure SAP terms that I have found very helpful in deciphering the gibberish the old hands speak to each other. I will admit to being extremely old; let's just say "Pre-ScoobyDoo". Nevertheless, I submit that even you whippersnappers don't know a language until you have a well-thumbed hard copy command reference. This one is quite good.Sap R/3 Abap/4: Command Reference OverviewThis complete ABAP/4 command reference provides you with key information on the most important ABAP/4 commands. With a comprehensive index and exhaustive command reference section, you'll have all the essential information you need to master ABAP/4 commands at your fingertips!Versatile and easy to use, this reference provides you with complete syntax for most ABAP/4 commands. With instant access to all the ABAP/4 information you need, you'll achieve peak performance!SAP's ABAP/4 Command Reference covers:most of the current features of SAP R/3 ABAP/4; complete listings of commands, options, operators, functions, and system variables; complete tables of SAP system fields and ABAP/4 type conversions; tables of selected SAP transaction codes and database tables; and examples and sample code used throughout the book to quickly implement commands. This book has already been tested by over two dozen SAP developersUseful for SAP programmers of all user-levels; complementary to existing ABAP programming books

Cognitive Science: An Introduction ReviewDavid Green is a lecturer at University College London, where I study. He recommends his textbook - and only his textbook - for his cognitive science undergraduate course. If you're actually being taught by him, then this book may have its advantages - he tends to teach a lot of his lectures straight out of it. If you're studying cognitive psychology in any other context, though, I'd advise that you avoid this book.
It's poorly conceived and shoddily put together, giving only limited coverage of a complex and significant field. Major themes are left out or underdeveloped, and frequently important theoretical standpoints are glossed over without reference to key works. Green tends to put forward only the side of an argument which he agrees with - frequently completely failing to mention the alternatives. This, combined with only minimal guidelines for further reading, make it almost impossible to use this book as a resource guiding further study.
Ironically, considering that one of Green's specialities is in the cognitive processes of language and communication, this book is so badly written as to be almost incomprehensible. The language used is awkward, strung with non sequiturs, and frustratingly littered with unexplained and undefined jargon.
This is aggravated by weak general presentation. The book is entirely black-and-white, with few diagrams, and those that are present tending to be cramped and confused. The attempts to cross-reference material within the text also fails miserably.
The one positive thing I can say about this textbook is that it's relatively cheap. However, it's also of very little use. I'd strongly urge you to consider the alternatives - for example, Eysenck & Keane's 'Cognitive Psychology: a student's handbook' (I've been using the 1995 3rd edition), which covers most of the same information (and quite a lot which Green's book ignores), in much more detail and in a far more readable style.Cognitive Science: An Introduction OverviewThis new text introduces students to the concepts, methods and findings fundamental to the science of mind. It is the first genuine textbook introduction to cognitive science, and in presenting a comprehensive account of the discipline, it encourages critical thinking by presenting alternative views. The textbook grounds theoretical issues by reference to a concrete scenario throughout each chapter: a family conversing over breakfast. The opening chapters discuss the emergence and nature of cognitive science and core concept of the discipline, and introduce the topics of succeeding chapters in the context of the scenario. No single text can hope to cover the diversity and breadth of research and so succeeding chapters are exemplars of the discipline.

Removing the Spam: E-mail Processing and Filtering (Addison-Wesley Networking Basics Series) ReviewHere is a book worthy of the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover." In this case, you may judge this book to address the general topic of email spam, processing and filtering. Not so. This books focuses on the unix tools, sendmail and procmail. If you are looking for a book to guide you through the process of installing and configuring sendmail and procmail, this may be the book you're looking for. I couldn't tell you because I quit reading at that point. But, if you are looking for a general source on email spam and techniques for reducing or eliminating it, look elsewhere. A better title for this book would have been, "Sendmail and Procmail: Installation and Configuration."Removing the Spam: E-mail Processing and Filtering (Addison-Wesley Networking Basics Series) Overview
