HTML & XHTML : The Definitive Guide ReviewWhen I bought this book I didn't know HTML from JFK, CBS, or AT&T. After three days I had a good handle on the language. The authors don't approach the subject as recreational material; it's a serious introduction, and is quite good if you want to know how HTML really works. There's also good info on browser compatability, and good sources for finding Internet material on a constantly-changing subject.
5 stars implies a perfect book. Well, they don't exist, especially when it comes to an Internet whose technology is in constant flux. The authors cover not only the language but some of its pitfalls, and they include good notes for beginners on quality HTML design. I could criticize some sections, such as the one on frames that tends to be confusing, and some sections that almost ignore a subject (such as META tags, which get barely half a page). But as a learning tool this beats its competitors by a wide margin and is intelligently presented.
After several months of breaking in to web development, you'll soon realize that there's no single source for complete HTML knowledge. I can definitely say I learned good, responsible HTML from this book and learned it easily and quickly. Aspirants to power HTML programming will obviously have to seek out additional sources. But if you're looking for a starting point and excellent reference material that you will use again and again, this is it.HTML & XHTML : The Definitive Guide Overview

Enterprise Mac Managed Preferences ReviewHaving seen presentations by each author on the topic helped highlight some of the concepts behind the book, but I wasn't prepared for how eminently readable this was. Taking each moving part of how the Mac is customized/managed in turn, Mr. Maczak and Mr. Neagle take us right up to the minute with (obviously well-rehearsed) best practices that remove headaches from an administrators job, including Active Directory integration practically handed on a platter. Common recipes are detailed, and the cutting-edge (yet flexible) "Local MCX in a custom (non-default) node" method is discussed to boot.
Many technical books feel like they are all talk and lofty theory, with heavy labor needed to get practical use out of what's written. By explaining the why's behind what to do, and taking GUI-based and bash tools alongside python and automation techniques, this book is very accessible, whether you're a novice or a seasoned pro. Automating Linux and Unix System Administration (Expert's Voice in Linux) ReviewI bought this book expecting it would describe and demonstrate a variety of automation methods and tools. The book surprised me -- pleasantly. The majority of the book focuses on CFEngine (www.cfengine.org) and how to use it to manage server configurations, deliver applications automatically to those servers, and enforce a consist policy across the servers.
The book goes into some depth demonstrating how cfengine works. It has chapters on configuration, setting up a production environment, setting up automated installations, and delivering applications using cfengine.
There are smaller chapters on SSH, Nagios (and using CFengine to deliver it), and improving server security using cfengine.
The book is about 400 pages and is packed with content. There are interesting facts and config bits in every chapter.
With the exception of the cfengine manuals, there are no other books on the market today which provide a detailed, comprehensive look at cfengine...until now. If you are using, will use, or have questions about what CFengine can do, get this book. I'm happy I did.

Solaris 10 The Complete Reference (Osborne Complete Reference Series) ReviewThe author does not cover the new features of Solaris 10. He mentions zones in passing, never mentions DTrace, and his information on configuring services using inetd.conf is outdated (no mention anywhere of Service Manager and using it to enable/disable services).
This is a Solaris 9 book with a couple of paragraphs added. A complete disappointment.Solaris 10 The Complete Reference (Osborne Complete Reference Series) OverviewFirst to market, "The Solaris 10: The Complete Reference" is a soup-to-nuts reference for administrators migrating from Windows, Linux or previous versions of Solaris. Get an updated and comprehensive Solaris 10 reference that starts at installation and ends at incorporating applications. Use the included resources such as the Solaris 10 installation checklists and procedures, command reference and worked examples to learn how to use this new version to the fullest.
