Word Smart: Building an Educated Vocabulary ReviewWord Smart gives one of the best selections of need-to-know words I have ever seen. It lists over 800 every-day-useful words, while avoiding the temptation of adding some long, snooty-sounding words for the sake of intellectual arrogance. These are words that most college students should know. If you can master these in high school, you will be on the way to a rock solid vocabulary.
The format of the book is straight forward. After a very helpful chapter on tips for learning new vocabulary, the set of words is introduced in alphabetical order. Every ten words or so ends in a quick quiz. This allows you to test what you have learned; you can also start with the quiz to see what words you can skip over. The concluding chapters contain a lengthy final exam, the SAT and GRE hit parade (words you should have mastered well before taking these standardized tests), word roots, common usage errors, abbreviations, and some lists for the arts, science, finance, and foreign words.

The role of the Internet in changing literacy and education has been a topic of much speculation, but very little concrete research has been done in the area. Warschauer looks at how the nature of reading and writing is changing, and how those changes are being addressed in the classroom. Based on a 2-year ethnographic study of the uses of the Internet in language and writing classrooms, the book includes data from interviews with students and teachers, classroom observations, and analysis of students' texts. This rich ethnographic data is combined with theories from a broad range of disciplines to develop conclusions about the relationship of technology to language, literacy, education, and culture. Franklin LM6000b Speaking Language Master ReviewPros:
Acceptable dictionary service. (Quick, short definitions to a large number of everyday words)
Useful pronunciation service.
Cons:
Perceptible delay in appearance of definition after word has been typed in(though you get used to it)
SLOW word correction (if you type in a word/spelling not in the dictionary, the wait is excruciating while it comes up with alternatives. To be fair, this search can be canceled promptly if you typed in a wrong word by mistake)
Not quite portable. Dictionary could have been more comprehensive, used AAA batteries. Top heavy (literally), unwieldy in the hand due to 4 AAs.
Would have preferred more comprehensive definitions and lesser games. More comprehensive meaning better definitions and more etymologies. I would not agree with the term "Language Master" because of the perceived deficiencies in the number of words and length of definitions.
I would NOT call it a good reference either.
Compared to the the excellent free service at www.m-w.com and my own idea of a portable dictionary.
Keys go clackety clack - could have used softer keys.
I would not recommend this buy.
