JBoss in Action: Configuring the JBoss Application Server ReviewI bought this book about 6 months ago to prepare for a projected move to the JBoss AS from Websphere. As with most technical books I read as much as I needed for the tasks at hand. My project seems to be cancelled, so I may not go back to this book, but I'd like to leave this review.
I believe this is the only book targeted at JBoss AS 5 configuration and management - that should earn it a couple of stars. On top of that this is one of the best written technical books I have recently encountered. The authors have clearly taken the extra effort to write a concise book (400 pages, it could easily be double the way most are written). There are no extracts of man pages, no bulky examples of pet projects.
One time as I was reading found myself asking a question - and a few paragraphs later there was a reference to that topic in another chapter ("if you are wondering about security see chapter XX"). The authors have a very good sense of what the reader is thinking.
Did the book answer my questions? Mostly. Though I wish there was more information on JMS persistence. And there are whole sections of the book (e.g. portal) that I skipped.
One more thing, worth a star, the book comes with a pdf version as well. I commute, and being able to refer to the text without juggling book and laptop is a huge benefitJBoss in Action: Configuring the JBoss Application Server Overview
JBoss in Action is the first book to focus on teaching readers in detail how to use the JBoss application server. It also provides detailed insight into configuring the various component services such as security, performance, and clustering. Beyond coverage of the core application server, the book also teaches how to use some of the "hot" technologies that run on top of the application server, such as Jboss Seam and JBoss Portal.

The authors, both seasoned professional experts at developing and administering JBoss, provide meaningful explanations and background on many topics which they tie in with their own practical, real-world advice from their collective experience. These uniquely comprehensive explanations and the wide coverage provided in this book surpass any other content currently available in any other book, article, or documentation on the subject.

Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for Java EE Study Guide (2nd Edition) ReviewI found this book almost PERFECT for my needs. Short, concise, and focused on the exam. The sample questions were also very reflective of the exam. If you pass the sample questions, you are probably ready for the exam. With what you learn from the sample questions, content as well as question style, you should actually do a bit better on the exam. That was my experience- about 75% on the book questions, 87% (42/48) on the exam, with no extra study after my initial reading.
And considering the purpose of architect certification is to certify someone with 5+ years experience and deep understanding of design and architectural issues, then a more detailed book would be a thick painful experience. Also, a more detailed book would commit the authors to exposing more of the exam content, and devalue it as a fair measure of an architect. The fact that it requires a wide professional background with some core reading is excellent. If you struggle with the exam, enjoy the honest feedback! You have more reading to do, and experience to gain.
With sufficient experience in Java, UML, design patterns, security, general IT and web knowledge, and basic architectural principles, the book more than suffices. Basic EJB knowledge is sufficient since the book doesn't expect a programmer's knowledge of APIs and such.
If you are new to architecture, my recommendations are similar to another reviewers:
UML Distilled, Martin Fowler
Design Patterns, Gamma et al
Mastering Enterprise Java Beans, Roman, Amber, Jewell
EJB Design Patterns, Floyd Marinescu
And if you don't know enough about design patterns and UML to pass those chapters before even reading the chapters, you may be taking the exam a bit prematurely.
I will agree with one statement- the book lacks chapters on some of the objectives. But, considering that they might be considered fair prerequisites for someone qualified to take the exam, I'm not complaining. Though, in looking over my exam results, most of my wrong answers were from the sections without corresponding chapters...common architectures, legacy connectivity, messaging :(. I think my proclivity for screen-scraping did me in.

This is one of the most immediately useful and practical books I've read in a long time. I began using JBoss at the same time I started reading this book and I appreciated that the book started out with the relatively simple task of getting JBoss installed. However, while the book starts at an introductory level it doesn't stay there. It progresses through more advanced topics such as JMS, JavaMail, JAAS, and Web Services.
The writing is clear and enjoyable throughout. An extended example of a car dealer carries forward throughout the book. This helps the concepts fit together and build upon one another.
