A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python (Texts in Computational Science and Engineering) ReviewDon't be fooled by the title or the first chapter, this book provides
a solid introduction for using Python in scientific applications. The
main application areas covered are calculating the value of functions,
both built in and user supplied, plotting data, finding the roots of
equations, difference equations, numerical differentiation, numerical
integration and the solution to differential equations by numerical
methods.
Along the way you will learn how to use lists, tuples, dictionaries,
loops, list comprehension, lambda functions, Numpy arrays, file I/O
and Python Classes for programming scientific applications. Two
main highlights of the book are the thorough explanations the author
provides on how to use most of the features of Python and the copious
number of examples with answers. Other features are an example on how
to extract data from a Web Page and scitools. Scitools provides a
Matlab type of interface to gnuplot. About the only thing missing is
a summary on how to install Numpy, Scipy, Scitools, gunplot, and
gnuplot.py.A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python (Texts in Computational Science and Engineering) Overview
The book serves as a first introduction to computer programming of scientific applications, using the high-level Python language. The exposition is example- and problem-oriented, where the applications are taken from mathematics, numerical calculus, statistics, physics, biology, and finance. The book teaches "Matlab-style" and procedural programming as well as object-oriented programming. High school mathematics is a required background, and it is advantageous to study classical and numerical one-variable calculus in parallel with reading this book. Besides learning how to program computers, the reader will also learn how to solve mathematical problems, arising in various branches of science and engineering, with the aid of numerical methods and programming. By blending programming, mathematics and scientific applications, the book lays a solid foundation for practicing computational science.

Android 2.2 8 inch Tablet Pc - A8 ReviewUPDATE: This gadget was terrific--for the 3 days that it actually worked! I put it on to charge and the next morning it wouldn't come on at all--never to come back to life. It seems that several others have had the same problem. I emailed the seller, who responded immediately, who acknowledged the problem and has promised a full refund when he receives it. So disappointing, as it was great when it worked. Hopefully, the bug will be worked out of these and they will be available at this price point, as they are tons of fun.
I received my tablet yesterday, 11/17/11, well before the promised delivery date, so was really surprised at the speedy delivery. I was somewhat taken aback by the fact that there was no manual or instructions of any sort, and this was a bit intimidating since I have never had an Android device. It would have been nice to at least have a diagram to tell me what the basic function buttons were, but after a bit of playing around, I was able to figure out most of it and download a couple of apps that I really wanted (Kindle, Nook & Audible). I did download a Kindle publication that covers Android 2.2, but it is aimed at the Galaxy so is of only general use. I could't find any aftermarket resource that specifically discusses the operation of Android 2.2 in a tablet, but there may be one out there. There are boards and blogs that might be useful for dealing with specific issues, but so far I have been able to intuit the functions that I want with no previous experience with Android OS's.
I am disappointed that my device does NOT have a USB input jack on the unit as indicated in the described specs. The one I received has a black edge, not silver like the one in the picture, so I am not sure if it is the same brand/model (the unit itself has no brand on it, and the packaging has something in Chinese characters but no English label) or not. It has a separate doggle that plugs into the power port, so I am crossing my fingers that this will operate without any special tweaking on my part, since I am not a "techie". I don't really expect to have to use that all that often, so having to do one step more than just plugging into the port is not that big a deal.
This tablet is absolutely great as an e-reader that allows me to access a number of different sources. Being a senior citizen, I like the backlit screen for reading (I found the e-ink of the Kindle 2 difficult to read even with large type). Browsing the web is straightforward and the Market has more apps than I will ever use. I don't expect this to replace my iPhone (which I love and am lost without), but it is nice to have an app-based way to access the functions I use most often. The lack of documentation and USB jack caused me to deduct one star on the rating, but those would be easy to fix.
This little guy does not replace my laptop or my iPhone--too small for the first and too big for the second. But it fills a gap between the two, being the right size for book reading (especially with the ability to re-size the text), read email and do some basic surfing. The size of this unit is perfect (8"), being large enough to read easily and small enough to be easy to handle and hold for an extended period of time. I have yet to find out how long the battery will stay charged, but it is not anywhere near as long as the Kindle (but I need to tweak a couple of settings--turn off the GPS--for longer life, I just found out), but it will certainly get you through a day of reading. It can be recharged with a wall socket or USB connection. I think it will be ideal to take when traveling, since I usually am too busy to spend much time on the internet. Being able to carry books, read mail and check some news is well within the capabilities of this little unit. For 40% of the price of the basic iPad, only slightly more than a Kindle and less than the color Nook, it is a very handy crossover device and worth the cost if I don't ever use it for more than I have already gotten it to do.Android 2.2 8 inch Tablet Pc - A8 Overview

SuperTooth Z004092E High Definition Bluetooth Portable Visor Car Kit and Speakerphone for Cell Phones/iPad 2/iPhone 3/3G/3Gs/4 - Bluetooth Speakerphone - Retail Packaging - Black ReviewSUMMARY:
=========
[I am using the Supertooth HD with a Samsung Focus running Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango)]
If you search my reviews, I bought and returned the Supertooth Buddy (the little brother version of this). So far, the Supertooth HD has not exhibited any of the annoyances of its little brother. Currently, this is a 5-star device and I will update my review as needed.
What makes the perfect car bluetooth speakerphone?
==============
1. It should have caller-id that speaks the name of the caller
2. It should automatically turn on/off as you are away from the car
3. It should have ample volume while driving at highway speeds
4. You should only have to press a single and easily accessible button to answer or place a call
5. It should make use of your phone's built-in voice recognition system (if your phone has this)
6. It should be easy to pair and auto-download your phone's contacts
7. It should reconnect easily when you are in the car
8. Callers should be able to hear you clearly at highway speeds
9. The charging port should not be obstructed when the device is installed on a sunvisor
10. It should have a long battery life
11. It should be reliable whether it is -40 degrees in Fargo or the internal car temperature reaches 140 degrees in Texas
12. It should have good documentation or manufacturer's website and support
13. It should be usable whether the sun visor is flipped down or up
14. It should be reasonably priced
How does the Supertooth HD stack up?
=====================================
A. As of 10/2011, I believe the Supertooth HD meets the bar on all of the items above except #11 is currently unknown as the weather has been mild and #12 - the company website leaves a lot to be desired (poor resolution graphics, non-working hyperlinks, the support phone # is a long distance call to France, and the download for the "Full User Guide" says "Coming soon....")
B. I've owned the Motorola T505 and it does not have spoken-name caller id, doesn't turn off or on automatically, the volume is not loud enough at highway speeds (or heck, even idling), and it is difficult to press the small answer or call button. I got it a couple years ago and I believe I threw it in the trash.
C. The Supertooth BUDDY that I returned does not have ANY form of caller id (it just rings), the bluetooth would never turn off when I was in the house, and it wouldn't always reconnect reliably. I also had one strange charging issue before I returned it.
D. I've owned TWO of the Motorola T325 which was almost the perfect device, but horrible reliability. Two broke and they were returned to Amazon. I suppose they simply couldn't handle the Texas heat. They would connect/disconnect constantly and or wouldn't hang up or wouldn't place a call or wouldn't turn on.
E. The Jabra Freeway is almost twice the price of this (I've never used one), but the reviews so far aren't all 5-stars, so I decided to take one for the team and try the Supertooth HD.
F. I purposely purchased the Jabra Cruiser2 (similarly priced to this) for my wife, so we could decide which one we liked better in 30 days. So far the Supertooth HD is ahead because the Cruiser2 doesn't seem to automatically turn on (you have to remember to press the 'phone' button to make it reconnect, though it does connect very quickly) and caller-id wouldn't work for my name, even though it worked for other spoken names. It would only read my phone number, not speak my name, even though her caller id display clearly showed my name. We re-downloaded the phone book and the Cruiser2 still does not like me. So the Cruiser2 is losing in #1 and #2 in the list above and fails in #13. The Supertooth Buddy and HD are the only genius devices that use magnets that allow you to quickly move the device to the front or back of the sunvisor for when it is flipped down or up.
Usage Notes:
=============
Since the company website has "Available soon..." for the full user guide, here's what I've figured out on my own:
Saying "Voice-dial" is the same thing as hitting the voice-recognition button on your phone. You say voice-dial and then it loads your phone's personal voice-recognition system and everything works normally from there. With Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, I can listen to as well as dictate text messages from the bluetooth speakerphone - it's pretty fantastic!
Beyond that you have to specially add an extra phone entry to your important contacts, so that even if your phone does not have voice-recognition dialing, the Supertooth HD will pick up on the special entries and still allow you to use the HD's voice-dial, pretty slick. So what I'm saying is that you can call contact 1 or call voicemail from the Supertooth HD's own voice system or you can say voice-dial, let your phone's native voice system take over and THEN say, Call Mary or Call Voicemail. Both work great.
Now even if you don't have Windows Phone 7.5 Mango or a fancy smartphone, you receive 6 months free of Dial2Do which is basically a special phone number that you call that allows you to send text messages, emails, Facebook status', tweets by voice. You have to previously register the numbers or addresses on their website, etc).
IN CLOSING:
============
The Supertooth HD almost meets the bar on becoming the perfect car bluetooth speakerphone and for the price and 6-month trial of Dial2Do, it is definitely a great buy.
I will update this review as the days pass if I encounter any reliability issues or any other annoyances.SuperTooth Z004092E High Definition Bluetooth Portable Visor Car Kit and Speakerphone for Cell Phones/iPad 2/iPhone 3/3G/3Gs/4 - Bluetooth Speakerphone - Retail Packaging - Black Overview

7" Touch Tablet PC MID Internet Media MP3/MP4 Player 2GB Google Android OS ReviewThis is a very crude device that will provide you with more frustation than service. For one thing, the touch screen does not work with your fingers (it is supposed to work, but it practically does not) You have to use a stylus or some other sharp thing and use it to drag the screen up and down. Second, the speakers give out almost no sound. You have to use earphones or you don't hear a thing. Third, practically no apps to download. It does not have a flash player so you cannot stream in audio or video from a web site. Fourth, the minuscule instruction manual is worthless, plus it is written in such broken English that you don't know what they are talking about.
I will be throwing this piece of chinese junk away shortly.7" Touch Tablet PC MID Internet Media MP3/MP4 Player 2GB Google Android OS Overview

Superpad 10.2" Tablet PC, Google Android 2.1, Webcam, GPS, HDMI, USB, WIFI, 2 micro SD card slots Review1/29/2011
Arrived today in great condition. I bought this as an alternative to a super expensive iPad to use at college instead of lugging my heavy laptop every day. The initial charge to 100% takes quite some time, I've been charging it for about 4 hours now and it's only at 60%, but I've also been using it during that time, so that probably isn't helping much. It runs just like an android phone, only on a much larger screen.
First off, you have to set the date and time, and if you use the weather widget, change it from Beijing, however, I can't figure out how to change it from Celsius to Fahrenheit. Maybe redownloading the widget will help. It is in English, so you don't have to worry about figuring out how to change the language from Chinese, which is nice. Unlike the reviews I've seen on similar apads, the android market is pre-installed, so as soon as you are hooked to your wi-fi you can start plunking apps down. I highly suggest ordering two 16GB mini-SD cards to go with it, the android OS takes up a little over half of the 2GB internal HD. After you set the time and the weather widget, calibrate the screen from the settings menu. I didn't do that and was having issues using the on screen keyboard until I did so. Now it responds just fine to my touch.
I've seen on reviews for similar products that you need to use a stylus or a fingernail to manipulate the screen, but that's not so with this one. Your fingerpad works just fine. It's not a multi-touch screen, but hey, it's only $200, so you can't have everything, but the screen size is big enough that you really don't need it, plus it does have a zoom option.
Don't purchase an iPad case and try to use it for this. It won't work. iPad's have a 9.7" screen where this one has a 10.2". You'd be better off buying a case for a netbook. Later on I'm going to hook up a USB mouse and keyboard and see how the system responds. I'll update my review after I've played with it some more, but so far, I really like it.Superpad 10.2" Tablet PC, Google Android 2.1, Webcam, GPS, HDMI, USB, WIFI, 2 micro SD card slots Overview

7 Touch Tablet Internet Media Player 2Gb Google Android Os - ROCKCHIP CPU ReviewI ordered this product to see what android was like before I invested in a phone with the android OS. I was pleased when the product arrived in a timely manner and in good condition. I've heard that people were having issues connecting to the android market but I didn't have any problems at all. I downloaded a few apps already. I was able to connect to my home network and surf the web in less than 2 minutes. Android takes a bit of getting used to if you are like me and more familiar with an iphone. The only complaints I have are the RAM is a bit on the low side. A way to help that problem is downloading an app killer from the market to quit the apps that are running in the background. The more apps that are running in the background the slower the device becomes. Also, the touch screen isn't quite as good as I'd like but the device is all in all pretty good.7 Touch Tablet Internet Media Player 2Gb Google Android Os - ROCKCHIP CPU Overview

Lingo EuroTalk Translator ReviewI bought this on another site before I saw it on Amazon. Paid $10 more for it. I bought it because I am going to Athens in March 2011, and it has the Greek language as well as French Italian Spanish and German. I'm a 67 year old retired male, and this is my first time to travel abroad. I have traveled all over the U.S. for the past 10 years, and decided this year I'll try another country. I am going to stay in Athens for 6 days and rent a car to see Sparta, Delphi, and Mt. Olympus. I have a GPS that speaks English, but by traveling in some remote areas of Greece, I'm sure I will need a translator. I have researched many kinds before I decided on this one. I've had it for a couple weeks now, and it seems like it will work for me. It has a storage for instant recall of favorites, so I am entering phrases I think will be helpful, and will play them back, like before I enter a restaurant, and have them fresh in my mind. It not only speaks, but shows typewritten in the chosen language, as well as English. It helps when hearing the spoken version to see it written in my language. Sometimes what may sound like a "g" could be a "t". It will only accept and repeat back single words, that you can choose. Would be nice if you could type in a whole phrase of your choice. It does have many, many, pre-selected phrases arranged in categories though, and I do have a couple months to choose and select, then place them in favorites. If anyone could advise on the best way to understand their reply please let me know. I am going to try to guess at their response then type it in English and listen to playback in their language. Will have to familiarize myself with single, common words. That's where it would be nice to be able to type in a phrase and translate it. Sometimes words that are said in phrases are pronounced entirely different. Anyhow....this seems to be a very good translator for the price. It came with a quick start, and an in depth manual, an earbud, and a Greek alphabet punchout that can be placed and removed over the English keyboard. As far as the vocal playback. It's pretty good. Any foreign language will sound strange when you hear it, that's why the typewritten part is nice. You can read along in English as they speak in their language. makes it easier to understand.
Again, I think it's a pretty good little product for a soon to be world traveler. Who knows, next year it might be Rome.
Hope this take on it helps.Lingo EuroTalk Translator Overview
