MCAD/MCSD Self-Paced Training Kit: Microsoft (2nd Edition) .NET Core Requirements, Exams 70-305, 70-315, 70-306, 70-316, 70-310, 70-320, and 70-300 box vol. set ReviewThree things struck me about this set as soon as I received it and started working through the material. First, these books can be used for both learning and preparing for the certification exams. Second, if you buy the set from Amazon and you intend to take the exams, your cost will be a fraction of the published cost. This is because of the four 15% off exam fee vouchers that are included in the set. In the end, you will get almost 75% off the published price! Be careful when you buy this set as a used set from someone as the vouchers have discount codes that can only be utilized once. Third, these same books can be used whether you are interested in the VB.NET track or VC#.NET track.
This set is best suited for basic and intermediate level users of the .NET technologies. The four books in the set are focused on helping you learn - windows based programming, web based programming, XML web services and server components, and solution architectures. Each book takes a lesson style approach by splitting each chapter into multiple lessons. Each lesson focuses on teaching a unique skill and can be worked through individually. But I found that you need to stay with the sequence of lessons in order to get the maximum benefit.
I am new to taking Microsoft certifications so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the way the material is presented. Each lesson has an estimated time of completion which I found to be a bit too optimistic but not too far off. The relevant concepts are explained first and these are followed by step by step instructions on how to perform a specific task. Example code related to the task being described is included. At the end of each chapter (not lesson), there is a lab section that contains several exercises for the reader to perform to ensure proper learning. The completed labs are on the CD-ROM that comes with the set. This is very helpful in identifying by comparison anything wrong that you might have done on these exercises.
The CD-ROM that comes with the set has the entire set in electronic form, completed labs, practice files, and exam questions. The set also comes with a DVD that has a 60 day trial version of Visual Studio.NET 2003 Professional. The paper is very thin and these are paperbacks and not hardcover editions. I personally like the thinner paper as it is easier to carry the individual books around.
The prerequisites for using this set are a knowledge of controls & events, SQL, and other basic programming concepts. I think this set is aimed at users that are at a beginner or intermediate level. One advanced user I talked to wasn't as impressed with this set as I was.
The only downside to the set that I found was the intermingling of VB.NET and VC#.NET code throughout the books. I found this very annoying as I am interested in only the VB.NET portions. But I guess this could be a positive if you haven't decided which path to take or are planning on mixing the exams that you take.
The best part about these books is that there are so many practice questions for each exam! After researching other preparatory material online, I found that most vendors are not including that many practice questions. So getting these many questions (550 total in the set) for such a low price made it really worthwhile for me.
I would recommend getting the training guides by Mike Gunderloy (Que Certification series) that I am finding to be the best tools for exam preparation. But it doesn't hurt to get this Microsoft set considering the exam fee discount reduces the price of the set and the number of questions included is great!
Overall, don't hesitate to get this set if you are sure that you are going to take the exams. But use the set as a secondary and not a primary preparation tool. Good luck learning .NET and passing the exams!
Update on 5/5/2005: This review is old so please check with Amazon if the kit still comes with the vouchers before purchasing. Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035 & 310-027) ReviewI do strongly recommend this book for anyone willing to pass the SCJP exam,
even though, it is very important for you to know that it does not cover ALL
possible content you will find in the real exam, will cover most yes, but
not all. If you are newbie you would not notice (dangerous) but if you do have
experience, sometimes you will feel like going and find by yourself some
gaps in the book. If you are the kind go for all 100% getter I do strongly recommend
using additional study materials as complement and even more, use your favorite
development environment to test all gaps or questions you might find which are
not covered in the book.
Pros:
- The book covers nicely most of the exam objectives.
- It is a breeze to read it, I have even had friends asking me what was this
comedy about. I did really enjoy reading it. I did not find any bad jokes,
I think I would enjoy a party with the authors, we have the same sense of humor.
- The book is 100% reliable, perfectly accurate, if the content is in the book
it is right. As far as I can tell, I did not find one single question error or
wrong concept and I made all self tests in the book and I consider myself a
really meticulous guy (this is a MUST requirement for any study material, there
are many inaccurate books and preparation materials with flawed concepts). Not
studying or keeping your concepts from experience is even better than studying it
wrong, this book only does good. The authors gained my entire trust, I will look only
for them when looking for further Java certification books.

- After reading it I was EVEN able to spot few really flawed questions in my
third-party training software!!! this speaks by itself. They (third-party training
software support) were very surprised at that, I asked them how could I rely on a
training software with few flawed questions and their answer was "you are really
prepared, this proof you really master the concepts and that you are ready for the
test", thanks to this book.
Cons:
- Bear in mind there are (I would say) many uncovered concepts or topics related to the
exam, this book is not an exhaustive Java reference and some of the uncovered content
can easily appear in the test, these bellow are the kind of questions left unanswered/uncovered
that you would have to find out BY YOURSELF somewhere else and you might be surprised to
find in the exam e.g.

. What are Daemon type threads how they behave differently from non-daemon threads?
. Are static variables initialized as instance variables with default values?
. some exotic declarations e.g. can you tell about this one? "int[] a, b[];" here
you have an array and a matrix.
. Converting Octal/Hex/Binary/Decimal.
. Operators precedence!!!
. Are assertions considered as a return statement with the compiler
returning the kind of "line X is unreachable because of a previous assert false;"?
. Is there an inner classes nesting limit?
. How can you refer to the instance of the outmost class from the nested 2nd level
deep non-static inner class?
. Can methods return references to (method) locally declared inner classes, if so
how can that be referenced/used from outside? as Object?
. Possible valid access modifiers for (method) locally declared inner classes?

- The software included with the book is in my opinion very bad quality, not
the content of the questions (I never did any) but the applications, the
selftest software included with the book is a very small sized frame
no-resizable that you would have to scroll back and forth for reading
any question, extremelly annoying. Additionally the bonus stuff on internet
I could never download because of some errors in the pages, I finally gave
up about using it.
I had the SCJP 1.4 exam last friday 09/03/2004 passing with 95% and this was my
passing formula:
- I have more than 5 years experience programming in Java and C++.
- Reading this book. It took me one calendar week to go through the complete
book (SCJP part) with questions and everything. I am in holidays and invested
4 days for studying :-) on top of one weekend. Not to mention this book
was my pillow for this complete week. But you can reeeeally enjoy reading
it, I read most of it on Parade Platz, Movenpick, having Movenpick chocolate
ice creams, if you are Swiss you know what I am talking about ... the ice cream
helped a lot.

- I practiced mostly using SelfTest Software http://www.selftestsoftware.com
training to track my progress.

- I had already the Brainbench certification Master in Java 1 & 2,
http://www.brainbench.com. I recommend having the Brainbench Java 2
test or preparation before going to the SCJP. Brainbench has the toughest
tests I have ever experienced, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere!!!
But understand that Brainbench test objectives are much broader.

These are some nice statistics you can use as a reference, these are the results
of my preparation compared to the results in the actual exam, I think there is a
clear correlation:
SelfTest questions included in the book (I did each only once after reading the corresponding
chapter, does not make sense doing many times, the idea is not to memorize), however writing
what (and why) you did wrong is very useful to focus your studying efforts even further:
Chapter 1- Language Fundamentals 17/20 (85%)
Chapter 2- Declarations and Access Control 10/15 (66%)
Chapter 3- Operators and Assigments17/18 (94%)
Chapter 4- Flow Control, Exceptions and Assertions 14/20 (70%)
Chapter 5- OO Overloading and Overriding ... 21/21 (100%)
Chapter 6- java.lang Math, Strings, Wrappers 15/19 (78%)
Chapter 7- Objects and Collections 12/15 (80%)
Chapter 8- Inner classes 8/12 (66%)
Chapter 9- Threads 18/21 (85%)
These are my overall results of doing simulation tests using third-party
SelfTest software during my studying of the book:
first try - 66% (without studying)
second try - 72%
third try - 85%
fourth try - 100%
These are my results in the actual exam overall passing 95%:
Language Fundamentals 90%
Declarations and Access control 100%
Operators and Assigments 87%
Flow Control, Assertions, and Exception Handling 100%
Overloading, Overriding, Runtime Type and OO100%
Fundamental Classes in the java.lang package100%
The Collections Framework 100%
Garbage Collection100%
Threads 87%
One last note, do not cheat yourself, do not use BRAINDUMPS, try
instead to deeply understand all concepts. Additionally
the "serialization" mechanism for BD is not actually reliable,
I looked at those for curiousity and it was pure crap.

The subtitle, "Passing the Sun Certified Web Componet Developer Exam" should have been the main title, since it deals mostly with the memorization of terms and mock quizzes for the purpose of passing the Sun Exam.
As a textbook it is inadequate. The book purports to be using the latest in "cognitive science and learning theory," but in my opinion it is simply juvenile humor applied to mask its lack of substance and poor organization. Information is haphazardly presented and continually interrupted with dumb gags that distract from the material. The technical details of servlets and JSPs are dealt with in only a superficial manner. Actual code fragments used to illustrate concepts are few and lack meaningful context. Fully half of its 879 pages are wasted on silly cartoon-like quips. A Programmer's Guide to Java SCJP Certification: A Comprehensive Primer (3rd Edition) ReviewI bought this book, because i wanted to pass sun's examination (scjp)
Without having any prior Java knowledge, i based all my study exclusively
on this book for that purpose. I was reading it thoroughly and practiced, many hours per day for 9 weeks. After finishing it i took the mok exam at the end of the book, and i failed! I did one more review on my weak topics for 1 week and then
i took the official scjp test in a prometric center.
From what i heard, i was expecting the questions to be in a somehow easier
level than that of the book. Instead imho they were harder! Solutions wheren't as
apparent as i thought (simple put they do are tricky! no matter what they claim) Nor where the questions 72 but 60 (time three hours)
Nevertheless i passed the test with a 70% score (pass limit 58%).
So apparently this book managed to cover succesfully the needed topics,
allthough i would recommend studying for more time and from 2 books simultaleously.

Core J2EE Patterns: Best Practices and Design Strategies (2nd Edition) ReviewWe software developers often get ourselves buried in learning new technologies, particularly in J2EE, there are so many things to learn, e.g., JSP, Servlet, JAAS, JSSE, JMS, JavaMail, EJB, JDBC, JDO, etc. just to name a few. With these overwhelming technologies, we often overlook the issue how to "design" "good" systems using these technologies. Knowing the technology itself is one thing, and knowing how to design with it well is another. Technologies are always advancing, it is really the design technique that is the essence or hard-core skill that a software developer should obtain.
Patterns, are such essences. They are best practices from experiences on how to design the systems/components at different levels. And Core J2EE Patterns are such collections in the J2EE context.
Even though the authors claim that these patterns are used under the J2EE context, I see most of them also application in a more general context. For example,
If a remote service is to be provided, it is good practice to use Session Facade (or Remote Facade), and it will provide service by delegating to the Application Service (or Service Layer) or Business Delegate.
To facilitate the client to access a remote service, Business Delegate can be applied to hide the remoteness, in which it will use Service Locator to look up the remote service. In this sense, Business Delegate also functions as a proxy of the remote service.
To decouple the Business Object from accessing the resources directly, Data Access Object is a good design to be applied.
To move the data between the tiers or processes, Data Transfer Object can be use.
If studying carefully, you will a lot of patterns and concepts can be applied to non-J2EE applications. And a lot of them can be traced back to the seminal work of GoF (Design Patterns). That is why I said the design skill should be essential to a developer, these techniques are correlated and inter-connected, and accumulated by experience. They are relatively stable (IMO), though the technologies are changing (rapidly).
The other good things about book, the authors not only document the best practices (patterns) of J2EE applications to learn, they also list a set of bad practices (anti-patterns) to avoid, in between, they provide a bridge, the refactoring, to go from bad to good.
Also, no pattern is an island. All patterns are related, and to form a bigger or higher level of pattern, and these higher level of patterns collaborate with each other and eventually form the whole architecture of the system, that is pattern oriented architecture. In last episode, the authors gave such an example, and they call it a micro architecture.
The authors also refer to the work of Martin Fowler's Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture(which list patterns of more general enterprise application patterns besides J2EE) to clear out some gaps between the two books, e.g., Value Object in 1st edition really means Transfer Object, which is the same pattern listed as Data Transfer Object in Fowler's book. And Value Object is just another pattern in PEAA.
The writing style is very smooth, succinct and to the point. The pattern template is classic, with the authors chose strategies for implementation variations. The examples are probably excerpt from real projects, however, there are some errors in the code, which made me doubt that these codes were ever compiled. MCAD/MCSD C# (r) .NET (tm) Certification All-in-One Exam Guide (Exams 70-315, 70-316, 70-320) ReviewI've read the first three chapters and am extremely frustrated by the number and blatancy of errors. For example the book states that a namespace declaration doesn't need a semicolon, but the quiz answers claim explicitly that it does.
There are many many errors in the SIMPLEST things and I don't trust the rest of this book.
** I'm adding this now that I'm on chapter 11. This is the WORST technical book I have ever read. There are errors EVERYWHERE. Blatant, stupid errors that show that the writer has NO idea what they are talking about. Full on contradictions between the text and the quiz answers are in EVERY quiz so far. How about this for a moronically incorrect history lesson, "The network designers used [TCP/IP] to provide MILNET, which initially connected the military computers and was developed into the Internet today."
